“Dear PoP,
Anyone have a good recommendation for Free-range, blissful, guilt-free turkeys (who willingly offer themselves for Thanksgiving dinner)? Last year I got two from Whole Foods, one was delicious, one was not. (Brined and cooked the same – no idea why, but a big difference in flavor and texture.)
Just need one this year, and would rather not take a 50/50 chance on goodness!”
Do they have any good Turkeys at any of the farmers markets?

Truck Patch Farm at 14& U farmers market is taking orders for turkey’s contact them at info@truckpatchfarms.com
Also the post has a resource for finding local turkeys: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/10/AR2009111009600.html
Why can’t you eat a regular turkey that has been pumped full of hormones like the rest of us?
I’d avoid buying them at Whole Foods, unless you agree with their CEO that health care is a commodity that only the rich, like him, deserve.
And if you’ve grown up eating turkeys from the regular grocery store like most of us have, you might want to taste a wild or free-range bird first. Sometimes they’re a little gamey.
Any one who’s been paying attention has known for years that the CEO of Whole Foods is a douchebag Libertarian. I don’t see why you have to agree with every single opinion expressed by the board of directors of a company that also supports organic and free-range farming practices.
I usually just buy the cheapest turkey I can find, brine it overnight and cook it in my smoker.
Most of the farmers at the markets have taken all the orders they can for pickup this weekend, but there might still be some available.
I’m getting a Maple Lawn turkey from MOM: http://www.myorganicmarket.com/ We’ve had these turkeys before, and they have all been good.
I’d also consider calling the Yes to see what they offer.
It’s probably too late, but I always pre-order a bird from Smith Meadows farm (they’re at the Dupont Farmers’ Market). They raise pastured (super-free range) birds, but they’re not heritage breeds (which can be a bit gamey, like anon @3:05 noted). The poultry vendors at Eastern Market might be able to hook you up.
And like Rusty, I brine overnight and then smoke it…although I like to allow an extra day in the fridge after brining to allow the skin to dry out.
You can order a turkey from the butcher at Eastern Market.
Adventures in Shaw did a great post on buying local foods for Thanksgiving:

My Organic Market has two brands, and the West End Farmers Market in Alexandria on Sundays has ones you can order, too.

I like to taste the cruelty in my Thanksgiving turkey
I second what mmm said.
If you don’t mind driving, check out the turkeys from the Dutch Market in Laurel.
I’ve had turkeys from there for 2 years, and they’re great

GoingGreenDC.net just did a post about places where you can find heritage and organic turkeys.
I don’t care how my turkey was treated while it was alive. I only care about how it’s treated in my kitchen. This sounds like a SWPL post.
Definitely avoid Whole Foods, unless you hate having health care.
