Dear PoP – Where Can I Get a Christmas Tree?
18 November 2009 4:00 PM | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP“Dear PoP,
This is my first year in DC and I was wondering if you could post info on where to purchase live Christmas trees in the area.”
Brightwood Living gave some great suggestions last year. You can also find some suggestions here and here. But if any good spots have been left out please leave your suggestions in the comments. So when do Christmas trees generally go up anyway?

Butler’s Orchard. Cut your own. Buy some pies and the best wreath deal in town. It’s a haul to get there, but you can make a Sunday afternoon out of it.
I’m not on the payroll, I just like the place so much.

Oyster Bilingual Elementary School at 2801 Calvert Street. Just 2 blocks past Open City/ entrance to GW parkway. From small to HUGE trees from their parking lot. I’ve bought here the last 3 years.

Bancroft Elementary School at 18th and Newton St NW. They probably will start on 12/12/09.

Garden District. Not cheap, but really fresh, long-lasting trees. Plus they need the money to keep them out of bankruptcy.

Does this person mean a live tree, as in with a ball, or a cut, real tree vs. an artificial one, because if the former, the advice so far is not helpful.

Garden District! They have a great selection of trees perfectly sized for small apartments. And I didn’t find them too expensive.

I go to the ‘burbs and go to Home Depot. I need one that’s at least 9′ tall to fill the space in my living room, and anyplace in the city that has them that large are super expensive. I would love to buy one at Eastern Market, but it’s so far out of my price range that it’s just not doable.
The place on NY Ave. is the cheapest I’ve seen in the city though, and perhaps for smaller trees it’s reasonable.

Didn’t I see just recently that Garden District has filed for bankruptcy? That might rule them out. . .
We usually cut our own – someplace like Butlers. There are lots of cut your own places in the outer burbs of Maryland.

This jew can’t help you goyim with your X-mas trees, but I’ll throw out an eco-minded plea to consider a live tree. You can use it for the holiday and plant it when you’re done.

From November 29th through December 20th, Little Scrub Ridge Farm will be selling freshly cut Christmas trees at the Dupont Circle Farmers Market. It’s not a cut-your-own-tree option, but you’re still getting a tree straight from the farm!

Anonymous, she or he SAYS live tree, thus my question.

If you are a certin type of person that the Garden District owner likes then go give him your money, I will get mine nice and cheep from HomeDepot.

There is a GREAT garden center in Shaw at Ninth and N Streets, NW called Old City Green.
They usually have a fire going, hot cider, tons of Christmas trees, wreaths, garland, etc. This year they’ll feature some artisinal crafts as well.
Old City Green is where it’s at!

Go artificial. It’s better for the planet and you don’t have to put them together in million pieces or place lights on them anymore.

I’m looking for an organic Christmas tree, preferably free range. Has anyone had any luck finding such a tree in this area?

Oyster Bilingual School in Woodley Park sells trees. The school is located at the corner of Calvert and 29th St. NW, just down the street from the Omni Shoreham and Marriott Woodley Park.

I like the little tree “store” that sets up shop on New Hampshire Ave just outside the DC border in Maryland. At New Hamp and Eastern, right by the auto supply place. Cheap and the peeps have lots o’ the tree knowledge.

Eastern Market, back when it was somewhat seedy, used to be a great place to get a tree. With all the gentrification and then the fire, I don’t know if that is the case anymore.

There is an elementary school on 17th and S? Right around the corner from the 7-11 on 17th. Every year they sell trees as a fundraiser where a percent of the profit goes to the school. They also drop your tree off at your house if you live in the area. I have gotten a tree there the past 4 years, and they have been long lasting and fresh.

Garden District did file Chapter 11, but will start selling trees on Sunday (11/22).

Old City at 9th and N is best!

I’ve been getting mine at the Oyster School in Woodley Park. What they charge for them is obscene, but they’re nice trees and it supports the school.

I agree awith the Anonymous poster and recommend the Ross Elementary School’s Christmas Tree sale. They are located on R Street NW between 17th and NH Ave NW:

They start their sale the weekend after Thanksgiving and the proceeds go directly to their school programs such as paying for a music teacher, art, and PE activities.
BIG PLUS: They will deliver to Petworth for FREE!
I have been getting my trees from there for the past 6 years and have had the same PTSA dad deliver my tree each time.
Plus half of the sale is tax deductible!

Where else can trees be purchased prior to Thanksgiving? Thanks!

We get ours at the Dupont Farmers’ Market – get some beets, get some sweet potatoes, get a tree. My kinda one-stop shopping.

Garden District guarantees the quality of their trees through the Holiday Season. They can’t beat a HomeDepot price, but can beat them in service. They give each tree a fresh cut, re-bail them for you after you’ve opened one up to see if that’s the tree you like, and help you get your tree safely to or on your car. gardendistrict-dc.com

I would NOT recommend Old City Green to anyone, despite a couple of comments singing its praises (probably the owner). It’s overpriced (if you think Garden District is bad, Old City Green is quite a bit worse) and a bit of a dump.
