More Cupcakes Coming to DC

Thanks to @FrenchTwistDC for the newest cupcake news. New York based Crumbs Bake Shop is coming to multiple DC area locations. Neighborhoods include Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Cleveland Park & Rockville, MD. Exact locations have not been picked yet but as that info becomes available I’ll be sure to update. From their Web site:

I used to live in NYC and these cupcakes really are the best! I’ve tried Georgetown Cupcakes, Red Velvet, Baked and Wired — they’re decent, but Crumbs Cupcakes are the gold standard!
I can’t wait for them to open! (Wish they would open a Petworth location –LOL.)

It is sad that everyone is buying into this trend of custom baked goods. This is after all of our neighborghood bakerys closed down – now people want sugar loaded cupcakes that are all the same.
Support a local bakery if you can find one!

Aaron — that’s exactly the problem. If you can find me a great neighborhood bakery that consistently serves great cupcakes (and other baked goods, again consistently) I — and I’m sure countless others — will patronize the place.
I go out of my way to patronize local small businesses but some, definitely not all, provide inconsistent, just average service. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve tried to visit the bakery on Georgia Avenue (I believe near Allison) that they’ve either been closed during published working hours or the baked goods looked like theyve been sitting in the case for a week already.

Why is it that of the few full-service neighborhood “bakeries” that are around town, almost none actually bake things on-premises? I’d love to have a place down the street that smelled like fresh-baked bread (best smell in the world) and where I could pick up a loaf that just came out of the oven.

I would not go out of my way to buy them but I have nothing against designer cupcakes. However, I am curious to see how many more players this market can take. I sense that we are reaching a saturation point for high-end baked goods. Kind of like the designer yogurt craze.

I’m a bit befuddled with all the hating. If people want to pay for it, then why not?
Also, Crumbs Bake shop aside, aren’t the main players (Georgetown, Baked and Wired etc) all local bakeries anyway? Yes, they don’t bake baguettes and challah rolls, but they are locally owned small businesses. I say more power to them for making a buck off the trend du jour.
My only concern is for the players who are late in the game. The cupcake bubble will soon burst…

Why are people so angry about cupcakes? They are good and if you don’t like them, then don’t eat them. For years DC did not have enough places to get dessert. Now that local dessert places (even if they primarily focus on cupcakes) are opening up, it seems stupid to complain.

I agree with Anon 11:44am. You don’t have to buy cupcakes if you don’t want! I am glad that places like these are opening and thriving in DC.
How soon do we forget what this city was like about 8 years ago — no places to shop, eat, entertain without driving out to Montgomery County or VA.
I’d rather see these “boutique” bakeries opening than check cashing or fried food joints opening in this city. I’m even happier that businesses are succeeding in the DC.

I remember TJH how sketchy Petworth and CH were ten years ago. My parents are still in shock when they drive in the area and see all of the development.

Why is a $4 cupcake a problem– when people pay $4 for coffee concoctions at Starbucks? Also $4 doesn’t sound so bad when you compare it to dessert items at places like TGIF, Applebees or similar places that cost you $6-$7 and most of the time it’s not good.
