11th and Park

I thought above was a very cool perspective of “11th and Park” from owash. And below is a super cool photo from J Y W that looks just like some sweet street art I posted yesterday.

Good Deal or Not? Weekly Wed. House Porn Edition

IMG_0766

This home is located at 1300 30th Street, NW:

The flier says:

“One of Georgetown’s finest historic properties on the corner of 30th and N St. Four bedroom three and a half bath with two fireplaces. Elegant formal living and dining room with original moldings and large south facing windows. Wood floors throughout the house with a view of the Washington Monument from the top floor. Flagstone courtyard with pond and separate entrance.”

You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.

This has to have one of the craziest bathrooms (half) that I’ve ever seen. But I think the feature I like best is the courtyard. Do you think this is worthy of the title House Porn? It’s yours for $2,195,000.

Judging Restaurants – Bread & Chocolate

IMG_0753

Bread & Chocolate is located at 2301 M Street, NW (though they also have Chevy Chase and Alexandria locations.) I don’t get around to the West End that often but this cafe was super crowded on Sunday. You can see their menus here. Any fans out there? For those that don’t live nearby is it worth the journey?

Rebbie on Making Farmers Markets More Accessible (By Danny Harris)

Rebbie

Danny Harris is a DC-based photographer, DJ, and collector of stories. In September, he launched People’s District, a blog that tells a people’s history of DC by sharing the stories and images of its residents. Every day, People’s District presents a different Washingtonian sharing his or her insights on everything from Go Go music to homelessness to fashion to politics. You can read his previous columns here.

“Food stamps used to be physical stamps that people would use in supermarkets or farmers markets. A number of years ago, the government switched to an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) swipe card. While it seemed like a great idea, it largely removed farmers markets as an option for lower income people because the farmers markets did not have access to wireless terminals. In places like California, the government went out and bought wireless terminals for every single farmers market. That didn’t happen in DC. Because of that, a whole generation of food stamp recipients here doesn’t know that they can access farmers markets. When I took over the Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market two years ago and heard that we didn’t have that capability, I just went out and bought one out of pocket. Four other area markets got a grant from the city for wireless devices. Now, we have gone from zero to five markets where you can use an EBT card in the DC area. The wireless machine handles EBT, credit and debit cards and costs $1100 plus a $45 monthly charge. The hope is that the fee we charge people for debit cards usage will eventually pay off the cost of the machine. We don’t break even, but it is important that we have it.  Continues after the jump (more…)

PoP Preview – The Passenger

IMG_0840

The Passenger bar is located in the former Warehouse space at 1021 7th St. NW near the Convention Center. I was able to attend a media preview Tuesday evening. The bar opens to the public on Wed. at 5pm. This venture is from Tom and Derek Brown, Tom was most recently in charge of the bar at Cork and Derek oversaw the bar program at the Gibson. Paul Ruppert from Room 11 is also a partner. The space has maintained the warehouse feel:

IMG_0837

Though there are more exciting things to come after tomorrow’s grand opening. Over the weekend they hope to open up the “train room” which will be able to host overflow and private parties:

IMG_0828

And in January they will be opening up an additional room, The Columbia Room, which will be reservation only and will feature a mixologist who can make drinks for up to 20 people. I spoke to owners Tom and Derek:

Tom said that he envisions the space as a neighborhood bar. They were less interested in a gimmick and more interested in focusing on the fundamentals of a good bar. As such they will have 25 wines by the glass, 15 different cans of beer, and four beers on tap, in addition to specialty cocktails including gin punch which I may or may not have sampled between one and six…

While there is not a big kitchen there will be some food options. There will be Spanish Olives ($3), Marcona Almonds ($3), Chili Half Smoke ($7), Kimchi Hot Dog ($7) and Paninis ($10).

One other question I had was how did they come up with their tag-line, “God Save the District”. Tom told me “that is our Don’t Mess With Texas. We wanted to create a DC place not import a NY place to DC”. And the name The Passenger was inspired by an Iggy Pop song. I definitely feel like this place has very little pretension. I’m excited to see it when all the extra rooms open up and I’m equally excited to see what type of crowd it attracts. For sure it will fill the gap of neighborhood-type bar on 7th Street.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

Dear PoP – Fenty is Already Campaigning Door to Door

Fenty

“Dear PoP,

Fenty and his handlers were making their way up Rock Creek Church Rd from NH and GA Aves campaigning for his reelection. I got a knock on my door around 4pm (I work from home) and one of his handlers was there. He introduced himself and asked for my support and then called Fenty over who also asked for my support and shook my hand. It was one of those moments where I was caught off guard and could think of nothing to say to the mayor but nice to meet you. My question is isn’t it a bit early to be campaigning for reelection in 2010 when clearly there is a lot of work that Fenty could be taking care of on a Tuesday afternoon? With the rash of crime in the area I would prefer to see cops walking a beat rather than a politician. I guess that’s what I should have said to him… but like I said I was caught off card and a little celebrity struck.”

Given all the scandals he has been going through, I’d say it def. makes sense that he has begun campaigning. When I asked if folks thought he was doing a good job there were very few positive comments. He also has a pretty slick reelection Web site set up.

But what do you guys think – is it too early for Fenty to begin Door to Door campaigning?

DDOTDC sends word via twitter and on Facebook:

“The District’s first 3 modern streetcars have left the Czech Republic and begun their journey to DC. These photos show them being loaded onto flatbed trucks in Ostrava and then arriving at the port in Hamburg, Germany. They are expected to arrive by ship in our area in mid-December.”

Very cool! You can see all three planned phases here. Phase 3 is also below.

Wild Art

I thought this piece was super unusual. It’s located above the door of a sunken entrance in Georgetown.

Hidden Recycling Spot

IMG_0761

I thought this was a pretty clever spot to keep one’s recycling box. It’s hidden under the stairs up beneath the front of a row house. I wonder if it originally had a different purpose or was always used for storage?

G & J Deli Becoming Henry’s Soul Cafe

IMG_0694

When I walked by this weekend the space was looking pretty nice but I didn’t know if the Deli was reopening or a new spot was coming in. Yesterday afternoon The Triangle posted the scoop:

“G & J Deli at 317 K Street NW is closing and will reopen in several weeks as Henry’s Soul Cafe.”

Also interesting to note is that Henry’s Soul Cafe is currently located at 1704 U St., NW. I’ll have to check to see if they are moving or just opening up a second location.
