You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

  • TheHaySay

Anyone know a good place not too far outside of the city to watch the meteor shower tonight?

  • Matt G

Rave: Heading to Kenya on Wednesday for a 2-week vacation and to catch up with an old friend. Can’t wait!

  • Homer

Rant: Yesterday afternoon didn’t last forever! Incredible colors and light.

    Rave: 20 minute mud.

  • Oakie

Yeah, something good happened this weekend! I finished a dollhouse that I’ve been working on since July! It’s really pretty cool, if I may say so myself. Working electric lights, carpet, all that “original” molding and other details that we so love in DC houses…

And for my next random reader revel, I hope to say that I found someone to buy it, and that it’s going to a wonderful home with a little girl who will treasure it.

Hey PoP, do you mind if I post a link to the craigslist listing?

  • Tina dela Rosa

    Rave: Gorgeous weather!

  • Scott

    Rave: gorgeous weather on sunday.
    Rant: Washington Blade closed today.

  • ...

    Rave: Tweed Ride
    Rant: Washington Blade

  • Kate

Also very sad about the Washington Blade. I will miss “Bitch Session”

  • huh?

    what happened to The Blade????

  • Monroe St'er

Rant: Three teenage girls in an old black Mazda threw a handful of pennies from their car window at me and another cyclist while climbing up 14th St by Duron Paint yesterday.

Rave: Caught up to them at a red light and snapped a photo of their car/license plate with my trusty iPhone for the DC police. [Insert last laugh here.]

  • H

rave: gorgeous weather that makes me want to sing and dance and frolic!

rant: stuck in an office until 5 :(

  • Dead Presidents

Rant: I’m tired of living in this part of the country

Rave/Rant: I love my job and it isn’t moving, so I am going to stay

  • Jay'O

Rant: Hey, if you don’t like what’s going on with the recent GANG MURDER, let the Mayor and City Council know they need to refund the Gang Intervention Program!!!

The GIP works with the Police, gang members and Familes to reduce violence and homicides. Between 1999 and 2003 there were 12 gang murders in this exact area. from 2003 – 2008 ZERO gang murders.

Then, the funding was pulled. Sure, we have budget problems, but we have to decide if this is the program we really want cut!?!?!?!?!

But really – contact the City and Jim Graham or stop complaining!

Rave: If you conact either of them!

  • CHisOK!

Sad about The Blade. Poor news industry. :(

  • victoria

Rave: Gorgeous sunset last night. Anyone want some paint exactly that color? I am cleaning out the storage closet and realized I have 20+ cans of paint of various (but generally bright) experimental colors – great for decorating a kid room, or a wild bathroom. I just posted it on Craigslist under FREE stuff – searchword – PAINT. Come get it! Go crazy!

As for watching the meteor shower – it is probably farther than you want to go but I highly recommend Assateague Island Natl. seashore. I went for the last extravaganza about 10 years ago and it was like a rainstorm of light!

  • Gangs

@Jay’O…you are high if you think there were no gang-related murders between 2003 and 2008.

  • MK

You don’t need to go outside the city for the meteor shower. Drive to the open field across the street from St. John’s High School at Glover and Military Rd. You may be watched over by a few deer.

  • Oakie

MK, good idea. Any idea where to park around there?

  • rg

love is a dog from hell. still. ( thanks hank).

bday, took the fam to redrocks.

  • MK

Oakie, there is a parking lot right there. You wouldn’t think it but that area is dark at night even though it’s just steps from Military Rd. I’ve watched many a meteor shower there or drove there at night and pulled out my telescope. The park police like it too so you’ll be protected. Viewing is excellent.

  • TheHaySay

Thanks MK for the good advice!

  • Doll House

Could you post some more information about the doll house? I’m intrigued…

  • K St.

What time is the Meteor shower tonight ?

  • Indc

Rave: Did the Backyard Burn yesterday — 5 mi x-country race w/ hills, streams, and lots of mud — and did very well for little ol me. Plus I had a blast.

Rant: Today I have aches in my legs and ankles, and why the heck is my core area achy too?!

  • Oakie

Well, as long as our Prince doesn’t object…!

    Dollhouse:

  • MK

K street, from midnight to dawn is the best time for meteor viewing. If there’s a lot of cloud cover you may only see a shooting star or two.

  • Geezer

Oakie – great detail on the wall paper, trim, fretwork and the working lights are very cool. Nice job!

  • PetworthRes

Rant: my wallet got stolen from my office last week (yes, I’m the one always talking about not being a victim of a crime while living in Petworth…but this happened at Union Station, in my very nice office building)

Rant: none of my credit cards got used but the jerk is using my SmartTrip card

Rave: when I was just on the phone w/ Metro they said the person with my card got on at Potomac Ave, but hasn’t exited. When he/she tries, it will come up as a stolen card and they won’t be able to get out.

Rant: Still, probably nothing will happen :(

  • nycgirlindc

rant: while checking my news for the day i came across this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33973665/ns/health-womens_health

which basically says the a gov’t funded panel has said that mammograms for women under the age of 50 are pointless and self exams do not work…the only way they recommend mammograms under the age of 50 is if you have a family history and/or a genetic mutation….

my mom had neither of those two conditions when she was diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 50….if she had waited until she was 50 she probably would died..

i’m all for gov’t health care ( as someone who currently has none) but this just seems like an excuse for the gov’t to use to not pay for mammograms ..which in the end could cost alot more if they have women being diagonsed with more advanced stages of cancer that could have been detected earlier and more effectiely treated while in those earlier stages.
