Shooting in 1300 blk of H NE

Just received from MPD Cmdr David Kamperin at 12:47pm:
“That’s correct- this just occurred a few minutes ago. Subject shot multiple times. Street closed as its a crime scene. Will reopen as soon as processed.
Last information was subject being transported to local hospital.”
More from MPD:
“Correct – a person was seriously injured as a result of being shot as he was getting on a Metro Bus near 14th and H Street NE. After the shooting occurred the bus driver drove out of harms way. This investigation is ongoing and not much can shared at this point. Any witnesses or anyone that has information to offer please contact the Metropolitan Police Department’s Confidential Tip Line on 1-800-673-2777″

Is this NE or NW? NE puts it out by Benning Rd in Trinidad. NW puts it right by the White House.
I’m assuming that it’s NE, as your post says.
11 November 2009 1:22 PM | Jamie Said:
Umm… if there was a shooting at 13th & H NW, the metro as well as about 8 blocks of downtown would be closed, the President would be on his way to Camp David, you would have gotten a text message from one or more alert systems, and someone else would already have told you about it.
I guess what I’m saying is, why you would question the NE as it was published, since shootings there are slightly more common than shootings in the business district.

DCPS has the day off. What else are they going to do?

M. – given that PoPs post says NE twice, and that there is in fact no mention of the White House and there does not appear to be crazy secret service movement around town, I’m pretty sure that this was in NE. Really, that the title of the post is “Shooting in 1300 blk of H NE” is enough for me.
Done with snarkiness.
Um, midday? Cold and rainy day? Wow. I’m guessing this is a case of the bad guys shooting at the bad guys. . .
Sucks for R&R Hotel and the Country Club.
11 November 2009 1:37 PM | Anonymous Said:
sucks worse for the person shot.
why do you think they were a “bad guy”?

Commander Kamperin has confirmed that the victim has been pronounced dead.

**Snark Warning**
Hi ‘Anonymous @1:37′, I’m elizqueenmama, how are you?
Agree it sucks worse for the guy who was shot, but speaking from experience of living in my much loved ‘hood, I can tell you that midday shootings are usually targeted at specific people.
Also, note that I said it was bad guys *shooting at* bad guys. Don’t know who actually got shot. Particularly sucks if that person is a bystander. But again, from experience, I don’t often hear of good guys being shot at by bad guys in this city (only in the movies, y’know).
And, well, I know it was a bad guy doing the shooting because only bad guys carry guns. And use them. In the city. In broad daylight. To shoot at someone.
I am apparently in a very snarky mood.

M – this shooting occurred as the victim was getting on a bus at H and 14th NE. This is near Benning Road, yes, but it is also in front of the Argonaut, the Rock n’ Roll Hotel, the H St. Country Club, SOVA and many other H St. businesses.

then be a decent person and withhold your judgment on the victim until you learn the facts.have some respect, someone was murdered.

Hi ‘anonymous @2:08′, I’m elizqueenmama. How are you?
I am happy to continue this discussion 1) when you focus on reading comprehension and see that I am not passing judgement on this particular victim, and 2) when you use a moniker other than ‘anonymous’.

I’m not Anon 2:08, but does anyone else get a laugh every time someone posting with a pseudonym calls out an anonymous poster? Elizqueenmama is not your name. For all intents and purposes, you might as well be anonymous, yourself. Get off your high horse.

Sounds like someone took their mini golf loss at the Country Club a little too seriously.
/snark
But seriously, what an atrocity. For the victim, his/her family and all the H Street businesses. Especially shocking to think about how many times I’ve frequented that block.

Sadly, the victim was Deonte’s Rawlings brother who was unfortunate enough to witness a murder and felt unsafe turning to the MPD for police protection.
Sorry the Argonaut, the Rock n’ Roll Hotel, the H St. Country Club, SOVA and many other H St. businesses have to be put out by this tragedy.

Just read the Post story. Jesus, that is tragic.

@Anon 3:51, lay off the sarcasm. I was pointing out to the first poster where this happened geographically, using landmarks that s/he was likely to know. (Judging from his/her comment, it didn’t seem that the poster was very familiar with the area.)
RE the victim’s identity, this is a truly sad development in an already sad story.

You can look at the respectable arraignment record for George Rawlings here:
https://www.dccourts.gov/pa/
Granted there might be more George Rawlings out there, but my guess is that this guy lived the thug life and got killed for it. I’ll save my sadness for people who deserve it. I’m sad for his parents, assuming they cared one bit for him. I know they are suing the city for his brothers death, but that might just be gold digging.

So, am I allowed to pass judgement now? Bad guys shooting bad guys.

How do you know Elizqueenmama isn’t the poster’s real name? There are odder names in DC, I know a Hamilton and a Stafford.

I think it’s both funny (in a bad way) and sad that people are taking comfort in the fact that this was just “bad guys shooting bad guys.” This happened in the middle of the day in a busy area on a freaking bus. I guess we’ll save the introspection for when these bozos are off in their aim and put a stray bullet in a bus driver or a hipster strolling to or from one of the new H St. joints.

Sensless violance is always sad, but what is particualry frustrating about this community is its willfull blindess. Just puting a bunch of shitty hipster bars in this area does change the fact that H street is a dangerous part of a poorly policed and absurdly dangerous (by American standards) city. The fact that anybody ever feels safe on H street is the real mystery here.

Who wants to bet that Mr. Rawlings left at least one child behind? Living the gangsta lifestyle while their children are left to pick up the pieces.
In that sense, it may not take a village, but it definitely costs the village when these kids are left behind.

According to WashTimes Rawlings was out on probation for a felony gun violation, see:

Another fine example of our farcical gun law. Thanks Phil Mendelson, another dead kids blood on your hands!!

I fail to see your point. Mr. Rawlings was killed by someone. Now, had he been the one pulling the trigger, your comment would have made more sense. I’d be more interested in the killer’s rap sheet.
12 November 2009 2:46 PM | nate Said:
Pennywise,
What I do find interesting is Mr. Rawlings was 21 y/o according to the Post. Yet, according to the Times, he was sentenced on June 26 under a youth rehabilitation law. Why would a 20-21 y/o man be sentenced under a youth rehabilitation law when he has been accused and/or convicted of up to 10 felonies?

i fail to see your point. no one “just put a bunch of shitty hipsters bars’ anywhere. people worked their ass off and risked their finances to open business. theres no “willfull blindness”. everyone knows that the area is sketchy. should we just ignore areas like that and let them slide further into disinvestment and gangland rule? hell no. it takes people risking things to make life better.
12 November 2009 3:12 PM | Pennywise Said:
nate, had he been jailed its possible he’d still be alive. When allowed to roam, he died. Ie, he was a danger to himself and others and obviously into the thug life, so jail would have been at least marginally better than dead. Its all moot though, DC will probably never be hard on crime, at least not anytime soon.
12 November 2009 4:10 PM | nate Said:
Pennywise,
So we should lock them up before they get shot? How long should we keep them in jail? Far easier and cheaper than to try and get this guy living like a law abiding citizen. Failing that, he becomes collateral damage.
12 November 2009 5:12 PM | Pennywise Said:
Nate, stop trying to pick fights
No we shouldn’t have an arbitrary policy of locking people up. However, we should lock up more potentially violent offenders, of which CPWL is a good indicator, in an effort to lower overall violence. That seems pretty sensible to me. Think of the alternative, if we let everyone out!

“Far easier and cheaper than to try and get this guy living like a law abiding citizen. ..”
Felony gun conviction, and also a conviction for coke dealing, according to his records. Oh, and driving on a suspended license.
But as Nate says, why should we ever put anyone in jail for dealing and carrying an illegal handgun, or for anything at all, for that matter? Much better to ignore the problem and hope for the best!

“[Rawlings was] not a triggerman, but was going to get arrested for homicide,” a police source said.
you live by it, you die it!
the family of Rawlings has said many times since the metro shooting that he (Rawlings) was NOT a witness! However, no one ever asked if he was a suspect or a person of interest, and looks like he WAS (at lease a person of interest)
