SisterSpace Bookstore Opens in Petworth
29 November 2009 10:10 PM | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Petworth, RetailBack in June we learned that SisterSpace would be opening up at 3717 Georgia Ave. right by the Petworth Metro. I’m happy to report that they’ve opened! (Thanks to a reader for the heads up.) While the space is small it looks great. I briefly chatted with the owners who were super nice and mentioned that if they don’t have a book that you’d like they’ll happily order it for you. At the moment the hours are a bit limited and they’ll be open Thursday – Sunday from 12pm – 7pm. You can learn more about SisterSpace on their Web site here, they’re much more than just a bookstore. They’ll also be hosting educational and cultural events as well as workshops.
More photos after the jump.

Does this sort of business plan work?

It works until the rent goes up. They had a pretty good run on U Street. They were there since the early 1990s I believe. Longer than a lot of restaurants.

Looks nice with the new shelves and original fireplace. Good events coming too. But I looked on the website and still do not understand what they do. Is it just supposed to be inherent in the name “sister”?

Where Sisterspace goes, successful neighborhoods grow, but they keep getting chased from place to place by rising rents. Welcome to Petworth – looking forward to stopping by.

i believe they were evicted from their last space for nonpayment of rent. they were quite a bit in arrears if i’m correct. so maybe a business plan would be a good idea.

I recall the U Street location serving as a bookstore and a meeting place for discussions by visiting authors, artists, and community events. I once stumbled on one such event with a group of out of town guests who really enjoyed it.
I view their presence as a great community building resource for a dynamic and growing neighborhood like Petworth.
Welcome back Sisterspace!

Fantastic news! It’s like having a mini Politics and Prose in our little neighbourhood.

i tried to get them to come to h street a few years back, a community with a serious need for sisterspace’s adult literacy programs (my ex did adult literacy tutoring and her understanding seemed to be that there was quite a need in the area for adult literacy assistance).
oh well. lucky petworth.

Nice concept, but who buys book from a bookstore anymore when they can be had online for more than 60% off the MSRP? I can’t pay extra for something just to be supportive. I hope they plan to sell something besides books.

I stopped by today and it seems like a great space! The owners were really friendly and they have a great selection of books. I’m really excited to go to the community events!
