“This Saturday, Nov. 14, from 11-3, we will hold a community meet and greet at the Trolley Park at 11th and Monroe, NW. Representatives of the mayor’s office, 3rd district police station, ANC and parks and recreation will be there to answer neighbors’ questions and address their concerns. We will have a pizza party at 12:30. As you may be aware, this park has been a “drunk” park for many, many years and finally! the city has committed funds to renovate the park. Additionally, the police are now patrolling the park three times a day and have no tolerance policy for drinking/drugs in the park. We hope to get the park turned around soon.”

I am a member of the Congressional Chorus, a group of singers based on Capitol Hill that specialize in American music. Our fall concert, “American Folksongs and Spirituals” is this Saturday, November 14th at the Church of the Epiphany, 1317 G St. NW at 8:00 p.m.

Our choir is unique in that we only sing music by American composers and arrangers — most of them living! This is a very moving concert full of American favorites, sung by an 80-member volunteer chorus.

As you can imagine, local arts organizations have taken a hit in the recession, and a few organizations have already shut down. We are hoping that you can help us in a last minute push to sell tickets to our fall concert. Tickets are $28 and can be bought at www.congressionalchorus.org or bought at the door Saturday night.”

“We (Urban Pace) are doing a North End Tour of three of our communities that are in the Petworth area. The idea is to have people start at The Jefferson and work their way to the The Concord and then The Berkeley.

Sunday, November 15th from 12-5pm. Start at The Jefferson, 5407 9th St NW Washington, DC 20011. Once the person gets the information there drive to The Concord, 5611 5th St NW Washington, DC 20011, and lastely drive to the Berkeley at 5040 1st St NW washington, dc 20011. We will have our agents at all locations from 12-5pm so if someone wanted to skip one they are more than welcome to jump ahead. The gift bag – people will get part of the gift bag at every location, The Jefferson will have an urban pace tote bag and urban pace pen along with flyers for the jefferson and directions/map to the other communities. The Concord will have Urban Pace M&Ms, a brochure from Bank of America on home loans, flyers on the Cocord and pricing, and a flyer on the new tax credit extension. Then lastly The Berkeley will have waterbottles and reusable (like grocery store) bags from BOA.”

EATONVILLE HOSTS FAMED
HURSTON BIOGRAPHER VALERIE BOYD

WASHINGTON – The District’s most exciting, new restaurant—Eatonville—is pleased to present Zora Neale Hurston biographer Valerie Boyd at 4 p.m., Sunday, November 15. Boyd is the author of Wrapped In Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston and is currently finishing her next book, Spirits in the Dark: The Untold Story of Black Women in Hollywood.

An accomplished journalist and cultural critic, Boyd is the former arts editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and has been published in numerous anthologies, magazines and newspapers. Wrapped in Rainbows—the first biography of Zora Neale Hurston in 25 years—was published to wide critical acclaim. It was hailed by Alice Walker as “magnificent” and “extraordinary”; by The Washington Post as “definitive”; by the Boston Globe as “elegant and exhilarating”; and by the Denver Post as “a rich, rich read.”

Wrapped in Rainbows is currently available for purchase at the restaurant and will also be available the day of the event.

Eatonville Restaurant is a Southern-inspired restaurant opened in 2009 by Andy Shallal, founder of Busboys and Poets. Located in the historic U Street Corridor at 2121 14th St. NW, The Zora Neale Hurston inspired restaurant is in the heart of where Hurston and fellow writer/poet Langston Hughes enjoyed a lively social and cultural life during the early 1920s. Eatonville pays homage to Hurston’s D.C. connections including her time as a student at Howard University.
