This sign put a huge smile on my face. Are they teaching British English at the Learning Center?

At my school in Takoma Park, there were two representatives from England visiting to see how American schools worked…maybe they visited here as well?

Pero en correcto español, se diría: “Bienvenidos maestros de Inglaterra”

Time for PoPville to learn Spanglish!

Dear Pop, thank you for bringing this as this sign brought me to tears recently. Cervantes is rolling around in his grave.

My guess, and I know people at this school, many of them competent, educated speakers of Spanish, is that they are welcoming teachers from the British School in DC. Marie Reed has a dual immersion English/SPanish program and does a Japanese lesson study to improve their math teaching. Maybe this is why teachers from the British School are coming.

I saw the “Welcome British Teachers!” sign go up last week. I guess they didn’t stay long!

Last year at about this same time, a large group of British teachers came to the think-tank that I used to work at for a talk about transatlantic relations. I think that they are invited every year through a Department of State International Visitors program administered by the Meridien House to have a look around and get to know our city, our educational systems and us!
