Billboards Removed from 4th and P Streets, NW

Thanks to all who wrote in about this update. We’ve been following this process very closely. I know some folks don’t think it is a big deal, I can say from speaking to neighbors who live around there, they are very excited to have this eyesore removed. I am too.

I hope someone follows up with how much DC is going to pay Clear Channel to have these removed. The “emergency” billboard legislation stated that they would pay billboard owners that are forced to take down their billboards “just compensation.” Sort of like eminent domain, where the government will take your house and pay you some sum so that they can build a highway or baseball stadium where your house once stood. I think once we figure out this price we can all agree on the price that it will take to remove Boxer Girl, the next scourge a neighborhood assocation will take on.
excellent news. i hope the one on third and h is next. when i emailed them about it, they said they were aware of the complaints and “looking into it”. it’s not on the list of approved billboards, it’s another clearchannel fiasco, and in a totally residential neighborhood with no major roads going by. any of you H street supporters please feel free to help email the dc government to remove the sign. before it falls on its own and damages property. how come the post doesn’t follow these things?
From a Fenty Press Release:
“Today Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced that the District reached a settlement agreement with Clear Channel regarding the removal of four billboards located at:
· 4th Street NW
· P Street, NW
· 3rd Street NE
· K Street, NE.
“These billboards have been a source of frustration for the residents of the Mount Vernon neighborhood for years,” Fenty said in a statement. “We are excited to see them come down today and that an agreement could be reached so quickly without unnecessary time, expense or further litigation.”
For decades, residents in wards 2 and 5 have described the billboards as neighborhood detractions, even referring to them as outright blight. Today, the Mayor was elated to notify residents and community leaders alike of the removal of the billboards.
Clear Channel began removing the billboards this morning and will complete removal no later than Dec. 21. In addition, Clear Channel will take down all supporting posts for the billboards by Dec. 31.
“I’m thrilled we’ve reached this amicable settlement with Clear Channel,” said Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs Director Linda Argo. “I would also like to express my gratitude for the community’s invaluable assistance in these efforts.””
So I wonder how much the city paid (or otherwise gave if it wasn’t just money) to have Clear Channel remove the billboards in the settlement of Clear Channel’s lawsuit against the city? They say that a successful settlement is one in which neither side is happy; so I ask you: What is it that you don’t know that will make you unhappy?
