Building at 3rd and P Streets, NW Looking Good, Possibly to become a Wine Store
15 December 2009 5:00 PM | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Truxton CircleLast week a commenter mentioned that they were really looking forward to the coffee shop going in at 3rd and P Streets, NW. I have to admit I had never heard of that possibility. So I walked by the area last weekend and spoke to a few neighbors. They told me that they had read online that it was either going to become a coffee shop or wine store with a Georgian community center on the second floor. I finally found where they read that – on the Bates Area Civic Association Web site. From August:
“Mamuka Tsereteli spoke on his plans as owner of the commercial property at the NW corner of 3rd and P St NW. The first floor is zoned for commercial use and second floor for residential. He envisions a wine store or market store. He said he is renovating the property currently, which should be complete in the next two months. He said his intentions were to use the space upstairs to hold cultural events related to the country of Georgia, like art shows, musical performances.
He said he came to hear from the community what they would like in the space downstairs. Ultimately, he will be leasing the space out to another business.”
The neighbors I spoke with said they’d much prefer a coffee shop to a wine shop but are excited about the progress on the building. It is looking good. I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available.

A cafe that served wine would be the best compromise.

The Bates neighborhood is probably one of the best-kept secrets in all the District.

I was praying it might be a wine/coffee cafe w/deli (Kind of like Windows Cafe.) I will settle for a wine store. It will be one block away from where i live. Yeah!

Gotta go with wine/deli. Big Bear Cafe is only 3 blocks away. . . too close!

Agreed that Georgian wine is fantastic. It is the disputed birthplace of winemaking.

Isn’t that neighborhood Truxton Circle? Or am I mixed up?

Warderite: It’s both. Bates Area Civic Assoc covers the northern part of TC. Hanover Civic covers south of P, towards N. Cap. There’s some overlap between the groups. (Think collaborative, not adversarial) I think MT Vernon civic may have claimed parts southwest of dunbar shs.

I always thought that it would have been perfect for a brew pub. Plenty of space for retail/seating and a huge spot for brewing off the North side of the building. Sigh …

I think the permit for the property is currently to sell alcohol as a retailer, not as a restaurant does. Mamuka has talked about trying to change the permit but no news of that kind of change has been made known to me. It’s most likely that it will be a wine store and not a place where you can drink wine.

Does anyone know what this building will eventually be (wine bar or cafe, etc)
