1612 U Street, NW Development Revealed (Currently Results Gym)

IMG_1510

DC Mud released some interesting details last week:

“VIDA Fitness received the okay today to build its “flagship” gym and spa on U Street. VIDA’s owner will renovate the near century-old building at 1612 U Street and add an 8,500 s.f. extension glass extension to accommodate the new gym.

The new gym will easily out-muscle the current occupant, as well as existing VIDAs, with a 51,500-s.f., 4-story gym boasting “a private rooftop club with a 60-foot pool, resort cabanas, communal fire pit, outdoor waterfall, sundeck and a member lounge with restaurant service,” substantially beating out the 29,000 s.f. Verizon Center location.

…a still unnamed restaurant, operated by Capitol City Brewing Company, taking over the first-floor restaurant space.”

You can read more details from DC Mud here.

Dear PoP – Be Careful of Possible ATM Skimming in Adams Morgan

“Dear PoP,

In the last two days I’ve noticed on my online bank statement two fraudulent and extremely high (the max that can be withdrawn in a 24hr span) ATM withdrawals. I’ve since locked the card, filed a dispute with the bank, and filed a police report. I suspect it was due to a local ATM card skimming operation. Whoever is withdrawing the cash has done so from the Wachovia Bank (not my bank) @ 1804 Adams Mill Road, NW and another unaddressed ATM in Adams Morgan. Just wanted to remind people, especially during the holidays, to be weary of this scam and to check ATMs for suspicious looking attachments and cameras, and especially to monitor their online statements like a hawk. Also, I wanted to inquire if any other readers have experienced this lately and in particular with that Wachovia location.”

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Check your statements!

Good Deal or Not? Not Technically House Porn but Pretty Close Edition

IMG_1501

This home is located at 1622 6th Street, NW:

The flier says:

“Newly Priced bayfront beauty and carriage house with 2-car parking. Exposed brick walls, tall ceilings, crown moldings, wood floors and 3 working fireplaces add warmth and character to this perfectly staged home. Short walk to two Metros, Convention Center, Logan Circle, Gallery Place. Oh . . and don’t miss the 1 BR in-law suite w/ private entry.”

You can find more info and photos here.

From the outside I had no idea the inside was gonna look this nice. What do you think of the house itself? It even has a carriage house/garage! It was originally going for $839,900 but is now on the market for $825,000, sound reasonable?

Dear PoP – Where are WMATA Restrooms?

Poets

“Dear PoP,

I was reading an article on the Washington Post about the new Silver Line and bathrooms. I was surprised to learn that restrooms were even accessible at other metro stops. I had no idea if you asked the metro Manager that you might be able to use the restroom at the stop. As the article mentions, only some metro stops have restrooms. I did a quick internet search to see if anybody had a list of metro stops with restrooms, but I could not find anything. Do you or your readers know of the metro stops that have restrooms?”

I have requested that info from WMATA public relations but haven’t heard back from them yet. I’ll follow up with them after the snow stops being an issue. But in the meantime do any readers happen to know which Metro stations have restrooms? I’m also curious if anyone has actually used one before. If so are they relatively clean?

We spoke about public restrooms back in April.

Rollin Cycles Moving to 14th Street (Just North of N)

IMG_1474

About a month ago we speculated on what was coming to the newly renovated building on 14th Street between N and Rhode Island. At the time folks thought a Subway sandwich shop and Korean restaurant were in the works. But I just saw this sign last weekend announcing Rollin Cycles – Coming Soon. Rollin Cycles is currently located just up the block at 1320 14th Street, NW.

One of the Few Snow Damages I’ve Seen

IMG_1465

Lots of folks were concerned about too much snow accumulating on flat roofs. That doesn’t seem to have been a problem but this mesh roof at the old Garden District spot at 14th and S couldn’t stand the weight.

Snowmen of the Day

IMG_1507

Here are the biggest and smallest snowmen I spotted around town. The biggest (above) are from Alero at 13th and U and the smallest (below) was found in Mt. Pleasant. Not sure if you can tell from the photo but the smallest one is sitting on the top of a trashcan:

House of the Day (Reader Request)

xmas house of the day

Thanks to a reader for sending this great house. I’m pretty sure this is a re-PoP because I recognize the peace symbol and the antlers. This house is near the 17th and S dog park and “The Brandon” house if memory serves.
