This is a pretty cool looking house in Mt. Pleasant. It’s actually two homes and a bit unusual because the rest of the block is more traditional row houses.

“Dear PoP,
I was walking through the whiteout on Saturday afternoon from Adams Morgan to the Woodley Park Metro when I heard a crescendo of screams coming from the SW corner of Connecticut and Calvert. Curious as to whether the DC Police were brandishing firearms at yet another snowball fight, I scurried across the street to find a rowdy crowd of revelers partaking in a spirited sledding contest. Everything from snowboards to laundry baskets to pizza boxes wrapped in garbage bags had been deployed. The objective, as far as I could tell, was to see who could go the fastest down the slope in the most outlandish way.
It started out innocently enough. Hands-free sledding gave way to head-first sledding which, in turn, developed into tandem sledding. Then the daisy-chained sledding started. And then some guys decided to make a jump on an adjacent slope.
It should be noted that the liquor store across the street was doing brisk business.
Once the jump was packed nice and tight, the daredevilry began in earnest. Inner tubes and inflatable mattresses ran the gauntlet; each pass resulted in some serious air. The jump often just exploded from the force of impact. Some of the participants suffered serious wipe-outs. At one point a dog was nearly hit, a tree challenged, and one girl was totally plowed over while trying to exit the slope. This produced a temporary lull in activity but not for long.
Somebody brought out a shoddy-looking undersized plastic waterskiing thing that accounted for the majority of the casualties, including a collision with me. One guy took of his shirt, only to take a nasty spill and then get tackled and face-washed by his friends. Others attempted to jump over obstacles while catching footballs. Then people started going down the hill ten-at-a-time.
It was a total snow freakout.
I took leave when the dusk settled in, but judging from the full-throated chorus of cheers, it very well could have gone on all night. Everyone was having a blast. It was an awesome primer for the holidays and exactly what we all needed.

Room 11 is located at 3234 11th St, NW (at Lamont) From an email:
“Please join us on Monday, December 21st for a Winter Solstice Celebration.
Starting at 5 pm we will feature the next beer in our guest tap series,
Anderson Valley Winter Solstice Ale, an award-winning 6.9% ABV spiced
brown ale.
We’re even more excited however, about the long-awaited release of our
house-made Nocino, an Italian-style green walnut liqueur that has been
infusing since June! The complex bitter flavor of green walnuts is
softened by sugar and complemented by baking spices and lemon zest. It’s
served cold but sure to warm you up on a cold Winter’s night.”

“Just wanted to let you know that there’s 2 units for sale in a rowhouse on Newton St NW between 18th St. and Mt. Pleasant Rd, right across from Bancroft Elementary. I used to live a couple doors down and saw construction going on for a year….totally gutted the building.”
I am a sucker for exposed brick but these do look pretty nice to me. I’m thinking they might be priced a bit on the high side since they are both only 2 bedrooms. What do you guys think of the renovation? Unit A is going for $625,000 and Unit B is going for $649,000. Sound reasonable?

Well the Federal Government got a snow day. Metro is back is up:
“All 86 Metrorail stations will be open and ready to move customers on Monday morning (December 21), two days after a record-setting snowfall forced trains into underground-only mode from 1 p.m. Saturday throughout the day on Sunday. Metrobus service will also be back on the area’s streets providing significantly improved service from the skeletal service available on Sunday. MetroAccess will be operating limited service from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for individuals whose trips are associated with life-sustaining medical needs such as chemotherapy and dialysis.”
So what has your office decided – day off? liberal leave? or work as usual?

From an MPD press release:
“The Metropolitan Police Department is looking into the circumstances involving the report of officers “pulling their guns” on a crowd that had been throwing snowballs in the area of 14th and U Streets, NW.
On Saturday, December 19, 2009, an off-duty MPD member was reportedly operating his personal vehicle in the 1400 block of U Street, NW, when the vehicle was suddenly pelted with a barrage of snowballs. The member who was in plainclothes, stopped his vehicle to inspect for any damage that may have occurred. He then reportedly identified himself and went to investigate a crowd that had gathered as being the possible origins of the projectiles. Due to the number of individuals in the crowd and developing traffic conditions, the member called for assistance.
Arriving officers from the Third District responded to the scene for the report of a possible man with a gun incident unfolding at that location. Responding officers cautiously approached the scene as is protocol with a potentially dangerous assignment such as an armed individual, but at this time there is no evidence that they pointed any weapons in the direction of the crowd or at any individuals. Those officers were quickly able to ascertain that the individual in question was indeed a fellow sworn member and were able to deescalate the situation quickly without incident or injury.
The original videotape footage shown yesterday by a local media outlet did not appear to visibly show the off-duty member drawing his weapon during the course of his actions. However, the department has subsequently received additional images and statements that would seem to support the allegation that the off-duty member did pull a gun. The Metropolitan Police Department is intent on conducting a full investigation in determining all of the exact circumstances surrounding this incident.
The Metropolitan Police Department has truly appreciated the cooperation from the community as we all team together to tackle the many challenges encountered during these severe weather conditions.”

From around 6:30pm Sunday evening a reader writes:
“While The Woodner on 16th Street gets frequent visits from the fire department, simply due to its sheer size, tonight’s call was a bit larger than usual. I counted at least eight fire trucks, plus accompanying ambulances, police, and rescue vehicles.
16th Street is currently roped off with police tape from Spring Rd to Oak. No access to Spring Place, Perry, Ogden, Otis, Hertford, and Center Streets. Buses are backed up on 16th Street with nowhere to go.”
Some may recall the Woodner from the apparent murder that took place in the beginning of November. Anyone know what happened tonight?

A reader sends this great shot from New Orleans. The reader writes:
“And because it’s not all about the snow, here’s a photo from my vacation in New Orleans. New Orleans would be a PoP treasure trove – doors and signs and gardens galore!”
