This was one of the nicest signs I saw saving a parking spot (from Mt. Pleasant). And a nice consolation is offered:

“Walking down Park Rd this afternoon, not only was there a line out the door at Pho 14 but the nearby nail salon had opened.”

I found this one in Mt. Pleasant (a reader also saw this one) and obviously what is most striking is the awesome pumpkin head!

While I loved the snow, it was definitely the most exhausting walkabout I’ve ever had. I felt like I climbed a mountain by the time I got home. Anyway, all that’s to say, while I got tons of snow related photos some of my more traditional posts like House of the Day and Door of the Day we’re a bit harder to find this week. But I’ve got a good replacement for Door of the Day this week (see above). And the this house in Columbia Heights is one of my all time favorites…

Thanks to a reader for sending. Looks awesome! I guess this was before the police showed up…
“Dear PoP,
Gun shots ring, are you listnin’
Another day in winter wonderland, and another firearms exchange near the Lincoln Westmoreland complex. Four shots rang out around 1:40 at the corner of 8th and Q at which point the suspect began to run north on 8th street towards LW and rattled off another 3 shots in that direction.
Police responded very quickly to calls, and they are driving around the surrounding blocks in a matter of minutes. Apparently there was an off duty officer at the 7-11 who ran out and pursued the suspect. I’m not sure if he was apprehended.
It’s amazing that this can be such a frequent occurrence, even during a record winter storm, within a 25 minute walk of the White House.”

A reader writes in about the snowball fight at 14th and U. Word on the street is that apparently it started in good fun but then someone hit a Hummer driving by belonging to a police officer and then the reader says multiple patrol cars responded. Anyone else witness this around 3pm Sat.?
The above and below are of Columbia Heights from Queenedix who writes:
“I went out to mail presents at the UPS store and ended up buying DVDs, getting lunch, and taking some photos from around Columbia Heights. The photos are of the Col Hts amphitheater, Park and Holmead, Monroe street facing 13th, and a few others. One of my neighbors was shoveling the walk and singing–I might go sit and listen to him for a bit longer!”
And below is of an incredible snowball fight from 14th and U found on Twitter by @aaronoverman
And you gotta love pets enjoying the snow:

“Dear PoP,
I’ve been here in DC during big snows, but I’ve never had to get around during or just after one. Does anyone know which roads usually get plowed first? Will cabs be running along the major arteries if they’ve been plowed? Maybe others are in my situation: my flight out of DCA is on Sunday morning, after the snow stops falling but before the metro opens, so taxi is the only option. Just thought you might be able to provide a forum where people can exchange storm wisdom!”
Wow, in my 13 years of DC this is one of the biggest snows I can remember. So for those that haven’t experienced a snowstorm in DC please feel free to use this post as a forum of provide advice to each other. You can expect many side streets not to get plowed for a while. You can see a searchable map here of what streets have been plowed. Hopefully if you are parked on a snow emergency route you have moved your car but just in case you can find a list of those routes here.
From Metro:
“Metrorail trains will stop serving above-ground stations at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, December 19, due to heavy snowfall that is covering the electrified third rail, which is situated eight inches above the ground. The third rail must be clear of snow and ice because it is the source of electricity that powers the trains. Metro officials believe that by 1 p.m. the exposed third rail will be covered by snow. All Metrobus and MetroAccess service also will stop at 1 p.m. because roadways are quickly becoming impassable.”
From a couple of emails if you’re looking to get out of the house a bit (don’t drive!) – Domku on the 800 block of Upshur, NW is OPEN today as is Duffy’s (PoP advertiser) at 2106 Vermont Ave, NW. If other folks know of spots still open today to grab a bite to eat or drink please leave in the comments.
Any advice you can give to folks I’m sure would be appreciated!

“Dear PoP,
There are a number of things that I find irritating in this city and in general, but there is one that is infuriating to me: when people sit on the outer side of a two-seat metrotrain seat. The seats are built with arm rails so it’s not an easy thing to squeeze in between a person and the arm rail. I’ve found that it’s an equal opportunity offense- people of all ages, races and gender do it, some while reading, others while texting or playing some game and others who are just sitting and staring into space. I totally respect and endorse the metro “code” of general quiet and lack of eye-contact, but this makes me want to throw a fit, or a punch. I will get on a train and there will be at least three open seats in a car rendered essentially unusable by a person taking up two seats, with their possessions, sprawling posture, or unwillingness to move over. The worst is when you actually do try to sit down and you are treated like a criminal for disrupting their two seat luxury box. Today after nearly elbowing my seatmate in the face, did they finally deign to give me my 50% of the space. I CANNOT stand this as it is rude and discourteous. Can anyone explain why there is any rational reason for people to show a total lack of respect to others?”
Sometimes a good rant is necessary for mental health purposes. The problem won’t get solved but it’s nice to let off some steam. I did the same thing when I saw some guy clipping his fingernails on the metro…
