I spoke to some folks from Bloomingdale this week who had some interesting scuttlebutt. First is the the decrepit storefront at the corner of 1st and Seaton has been purchased. The word on the street is that it is going to become a Chinese food spot. The question is whether it will be sit down or takeout. The neighbors I spoke with said they were really hoping it would be a sit down spot. Again this is just hearsay but the neighbors I spoke to had heard that someone put a bid on this same property to open a pizza spot but they were out bid. And they of course were not referring to Baraki to be located at the corner of 1st and T.
Folks have been anticipating Baraki’s opening since Aug. 2008. Some neighbors that I spoke to said that the owner was still dealing with financial issues. While some construction has begun it doesn’t look like they’ll be opening anytime soon.

Yeah, that right there would have me walking out the door. Nothing says "You'll...
Columbia Heights and Georgia Ave opened on the same day.
I love it love it love it. I live nearby (Eckington), and bike by it almost every day....
Beautiful building, BOLD, which is a rarity in DC. Not sure how people think there is too...
Orange kitties are little psychos.
I have torties (and a tabby). Not quite as psycho.
Please let it not be yet another pizza joint.
I represented the original contract holders who were indeed looking to do an authentic Italian pizza place.
Here are the pics I took during the initial due diligence process
ha ha ha. Sit-down Chinese food joint in Bloomingdale. Ha ha ha.
Just wait for them to start installing the bulletproof glass and neon.
It’s amazing how ignorant people are about Bloomingdale these days, like Andy there. Wow.
I would love nothing more than to see any type of restaurant move in that would allow people to come together. Love the Big bear Cafe and Windows, but we need something a little bit more substantial than a coffee/sandwich shop.
Another Chinese take-out….ugh. That ranks right up there with liquor stores. I think it would be much better to have people stay in one place to eat and interact rather than just take-out.
The only good thing about a Chinese takeout opening up there is that it might put the other Chinese takeout on Rhode Island out of business.
I wanted to purchase this place to open a NY style – real NY style – pizza sit down joint. But 250K is a lot of money for this shell and out of my budget when you add costs of renovation, etc.
I live a few blocks away and it’s unfortunate that this will turn into another scummy Chinese takeout.
Why do you assume that the Chinese restaurant will be ‘scummy’? Something sounds racist about that.
Well there’s not much to go on, but the phrasing “Chinese food spot” would lead me to believe its a take out. Were the phrasing “Chinese restaurant” then I might think its a sit down place. If its a take out, that will be somewhat sad I think, there are many of those already and they tend to be the hallmark of ghetto life. Full disclosure: I have several near my part of GA ave, I do get cheeseburgers at one of them every so often.
On the other hand, I’ve always loved the idea that all over China and S. Korea, business schools are teaching people how to get wealthy by selling substandard foods to fat ignorant Americans.
david,
you’re right, maybe this will be the first non scummy Chinese spot in ward 5.
you believe that?
HipChick, nice skeleton picture, yikes.
I wish that I could say anything would better than nothing, but that just isn’t the case when we’re talking about a stereotypical take out ‘food spot’. I hate to sound like a snob about this, but such a place with bullet-proof glass and giant neon signs would be a step backward for the neighborhood. I hope I’m just overreacting.
I would love a sit down restaurant that I could walk to, especially with more than just sandwiches! My friends and I frequently talk about opening up a bar with *good* food and a fun atmosphere. Wish it would happen
I don’t think it’s ignorant to believe that after the failure to develop the firehouse-based restaurant on North Capitol, ridiculous delays in getting Baraki off the ground, and the current ratio between sit-down restaurants and takeouts in the area that a dilapidated corner being transformed into a “chinese food spot” is more likely to serve up mumbo sauce than a fine dining experience.
If I could ask Santa just for one thing…it would be a nice restaurant/bar that my friends and I could walk to in our neighborhood. Having better establishments should also help cut down some of the crime. Hopefully by having more people walking about, people will think twice before trying to take advantage of someone walking alone.
On a side note, I can’t wait for the new bag law to go into effect. Just imagine the outrage that some of people are going to have when buying their singles. Wonder if we are going to see a lot more fashionable homeless bags instead of the usual black plastic liquor bottle cozies that I seem to be picking up constantly. Ore maybe this will cut down on the homeless drinking and littering in general…most likely not.
Beginning January 1, 2010, District businesses that sell food or alcohol must charge you 5 cents for each disposable paper or plastic carryout bag.
The business keeps 1 cent, or 2 cents if it offers a rebate when you bring your own bag.
And the remaining 3 or 4 cents go to the new Anacostia River Protection Fund. DDOE will administer this fund. We will use it to provide reusable bags, educate the public about litter, and clean up the river.

“Why do you assume that the Chinese restaurant will be ’scummy’? Something sounds racist about that.”
If the speculation is that it will be a ‘Chinese restaurant’ it will be another ghetto American ‘Chinese’ take out spot. 99% of these places in NE, SE, SW – and all of NW too – are pretty scummy? I’m sure it will be a little better than the disaster on 1st and RI but they all suck as a whole. Horrible food quality, questionable standards, and filthy.
Obviously, it would be *amazing* if a good – or at least real – Chinese place moved from Annandale, but I’m not delusional. We don’t even have an authenic Chinese place in Chinatown. If it’s a ‘Chinese restaurant’, we all know what it means. This is the last thing I want to see in my neighborhood. I would rather take another bar.
Let me know if this clarifies your ‘racist’ paranoia.
Upon turning from my alley opposite this property I encountered the supposed agent who had just closed on the property. I inquired about the Chinese restaurant rumor and while the agent could not confirm the new owner’s intent there was a suggestion that a dry cleaner could be in the works.
By the way, the new owner is apparently Asian (or, ‘Chinese’ as they’re known in many parts of our Chocolate City…)…
I would love a sit-down Chinese restaurant and would be happy to petition the owners to make it sit-down. I am a recent Bloomingdale home owner who grew up in China. I’d do _anything_ to have authentic Chinese restaurant around here. Hell, I’d probably go every day. And volunteer my cooking.
