What’s The Word on Pho Viet?

IMG_1538

When I posted last week that Pho Viet was opening up at 3513 14th Street, NW I thought there would be a bit more excitement given the frenzy that occurred when nearby Pho 14 opened on Park Road. I tried to go today and sadly forgot that they were closed on Mondays. So a couple questions – has anyone given them a try yet? How does it compare to Pho 14?

And props to Pho Viet for getting a proper sign:

4 of us ate there on Friday night. The owner was very friendly, and made a point to introduce himself to us. He reminded us he delivers as well. The pho was very good (I’ve been to Vietnam twice, so of course I’ve had better, but really, it’s all good). I was impressed with how clean it was as well. The owner said he is having some artwork/decorations brought in from Vietnam (fitting!), so it should add some atmosphere. Finally, the menu has pictures for each entree.

I will note that a side dish they have on the menu is shredded pork/loaf, something I’m guessing the owner will take off on the 2nd version of their menu. It just doesn’t appeal to American taste buds (IMHO).

I’ll be back to try the pork chop (my favorite and the bar I set for all Vietnamese restaurants).

Worth a visit, and a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Five of us ate there Sunday evening. Wait staff is incredibly nice – they had hot tea ready for us even before we got our coats, gloves and hats off, and we never asked. The pho is very good, as good or better than the other place closer to Columbia Height’s metro. Fresh, light and still hearty. Also had shimp spring roll appetizer – stellar peanut sauce.

They have some kinks to work out, of course, but so do all new restaurants. The avocado smoothie was amazing, but one should probably only eat it once a year due to calorie intake.

    Worth checking out, for sure.

I live around the corner and I’ve been here twice. Once on Friday afternoon and then once Saturday during the snow storm.

The owners are extremely friendly. Nina, who seems to run the front of the house, told me how they cook their beef and how they make their meatballs. They put a lot of effort into it and it shows. The pho is tastier than the pho and Pho 14 and their spring rolls are outstanding.

We talked about how it took them a year and a half to open. Their family turned an English basement into a pho restaurant. 14th Street could use a lot more places like this and I’m happy to support their restaurant.

I’ll be eating at Pho Viet often and I urge everyone to go and at least give it a try. The prices are remarkably reasonable.

  • No veggie pho, boo. Even though this is 2 blocks from me, I’m not going there because Pho14 has delicious veggie pho.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. If it were a contest (which of course it’s not) this place beats Pho 14. I’ve been twice already and have recommended the place to friends. I wholeheartedly recommend it to POP readers as well. Their menu is now attached to my fridge with a magnet.

Constructive criticism in case the proprietors are reading this:

    * Consider moving the smoothie blender into the kitchen. It’s very loud.

    * First time I came, I ordered egg rolls and got shrimp summer rolls. Second time, I ordered pork summer rolls, and got shrimp summer rolls. The Shrimp summer rolls were delicious, don’t get me wrong, but try to work on bringing out the correct appetizer.

I overheard the guys in pho 14 saying they knew the guy who opened pho viet. possibly someone who worked with them or something? Sounded like they were not to happy about him opening a place a block away. My question is does Pho Veit have its liqoure license? I like pho 14 but its not the same without a tiger beer. I still drag myself to cleveland park for nam viet.

I went there on opening night, they are still working out the kinks, but everyone was very friendly and they tried very hard to please! The food is solid Vietnamese, but unspectacular. I think they will revisit the menu in a few months- hopefully they will add some veggie options, and my fav- stuffed grape leaves!

It is a good alternative to Pho 14- competition is a good thing! Hope they both are successful!

Went there on late Sunday afternoon after having finished the big post-snow dig out. All the wintry activity and added effort of just walking around through treacherous terrain gave me a sizable appetite! I ordered the spring rolls, pho with raw eye of round & tendon, and the rice dish that included a pork chop, viet egg frittata, shredded pork, fried egg over easy, and pickled daikon. It was all very good.

I would say, as a self-proclaimed pho connoisseur, that their pho broth was a bit bland. Perhaps their stock needs to work itself up in flavor? It needed a little bit of salt or a touch more charred onion. I appreciate that fact that one spice did not overpower the broth and that the broth had a nice clear luster.

Differences between this place, Pho Viet, and Pho 14?

Pho Viet: more extensive menu. I love the rice dishes very authentically viet, esp the one with the egg frittata and shredded pork. Cohi hipsters do not know what they are missing when the overlook this.

Pho Viet: serves HOT vietnamese coffee with condensed milk and from the traditional drip press. Pho 14 only has it in the iced version.

Pho 14: their pho comes in two sizes. At Pho Viet, there is only one size at one price. The pho seemed more meager compared to Pho 14.

I appreciate the fact that Pho Viet’s menu has the dish name in vietnamese with the appropriate accent marks so I can figure out the name of the dishes.

Concludsion: I can see myself going to Pho 14 for their pho and Pho Viet for their other dishes.

The place only seats 28 people including at the bar. The owners were super nice and attentive, I’ll definitely be back. Perhaps this evening in fact!

I went here in Friday. Sounds like they had a big Thursday opening, but things had calmed down by Friday. The proprietors are extremely friendly and welcoming, and thus I’m glad I can truly say that the food (house special pho, in this case) was excellent. Also, I ordered take-out, and sometimes it doesn’t taste as good as eat-in, but that was not the case.

It’s an intimate space, but can probably seat 25-30 comfortably. I can see this being a popular neighborhood hang-out for me, a place where I won’t mind eating solo.

Asked about the liquor license, and they said they would wait and see, which I think is the right approach.

  • yourneighborhoodlawyer

Went opening night and loved it. I’d say it was better than Pho 14 if they’d had veggie pho!

  • Petworth Diva

I love Vietnamese food and can’t wait to try them.

  • Chabela

Do they have a website? I want to order for delivery (althoiugh, ‘m getting the Pho:o)

  • RR

I went with my husband – we both LOVED our dishes. Pho + Lemongrass Chicken noodle dish, highly recommend the place. Fresh vegetables, great service and it was nice to support a local restaurant. Go to Pho Viet, you will not be disappointed !

  • RD

quit talking about veggie pho. “veggie pho” does not even make any sense. pho inherently means beef broth.

i will visit pho viet soon. also curious about the liquor license. if they dont have their liquor license, unlike park rd, you can probably get away with BYOB up there.

  • ShawRes

    DELICIOUS.

Ordered delivery during the snowstorm. Got the Pho to my place really fast. The avacado smoothie was Amazing! The smoothest smoothie ever. I don’t like really sweet drinks so this was just right, it’s almost got a bit of savory because it’s so creamy. Could be a meal in itself. Pho was really tasty. I thought it had a lot more unique flavoring to it while Pho 14 has a more straight on beefy taste.

  • sinead

The food was good, the service was great and the spot was very homey and cute.

After seeing the post on PoP, we immediately decided to oredr from them. As soon as the soon melts enough to safely walk there with the kids, we will pay a visit.

We ordered the egg rolls, pho, and the pork over rice with fried egg and that little frittata thingie. It was all amazing! We added a little extra of the Asian hot sauce we had in the cabinet, and we added a little salt.

It was in fact fun that they delivered the pho unassembled, so we could control the cooking. Nice touch.

They neglected to include a menu, so I am unable to scan to for everybody.

The incredibly friendly delivery man read the tab a few dollars higher than what I remebered on the phone, so I ran back to get some more tip. An hour later he returned insisting on returning the extra money. That equals instant loyal customer.

  • GforGood

Went. VERY friendly service, including holding our baby for a bit while we were having the dessert banana and ice cream. Had the round eye + meatballs pho, wife had some rice thing, and our older son a rice dish with grilled pork. Pho needed all the seasonings and extras to turn really yummy but I guess that the whole idea of the extras. Wife liked hers a lot, and the pork on my son’s plate was quite good.

So, overall, very good, especially for the price! Definitely worth checking out and going again.

And WOW on the delivery man bringing the money back! NICE!!
