Just saw this news from MPD:

“On Sunday, January 24, at approximately 3:30 am, a pedestrian was struck at 14th and U Streets, NW, by a hit and run vehicle.

The vehicle is described as a 2005 Toyota Camry, 4 doors, silver, with an unknown tag.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department on 202-727-9099.”

  • Not at all surprising – that spot is the #2 most dangerous intersection in the city:

Red light running and jaywalking is the norm, and ironically DDOT headquarters is located there – pretty sad.

that is an article from 2 years ago with statistics from 4-10 years ago… i would guess the statistics have changed since that intersection has changed…

They need a left turn light there, I think, to help move traffic.

    • There is a left turn light from northbound 14th, but it doesn’t help much because pedestrians ignore the ‘wait for walk signal’ sign and are in the intersection before drivers even get the green. Maybe a left turn light for southbound 14th would help also? Regarding this hit and run though – at 3:30am you gotta wonder if both driver and pedestrian were drunk.

Uhhh thanks for showing us a map of where 14th and U is.
    Silly.

  • Sad, but as someone who often nearly (and sometimes not nearly at all) gets hit crossing legally around this intersection, I’m not particularly surprised.

  • From DCist: City officials confirmed that she works as an investigator for the District’s Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, and was on-duty at the time of the collision.

Guess she, at least, wasn’t drunk.

A friend actually stopped and helped this woman. She was lying in the street after she was hit by the car and thrown into a second parked vehicle.

My friend was riding his motorcycle home from work and saw her lying in the street injured…with passersby doing absolutely nothing to assist her. She was bleeding heavily; he stopped to administer first aid and got someone to call 911. Evidently she was terrified that she was paralyzed.

Aside from the hit-and-run, he was really disturbed that no one stopped to help her. I lived at 14th & U for 10 years, and I am too. :(
