With the new yellow sculpture at the corner of 5th and K Streets, NW (see post above) this smaller piece really gets overshadowed. Literally. It’s pretty neat though. How’s that for a sophisticated critique…

Here’s another killer from Forrest Hills. This one could very well be the most unusual I’ve seen in the city.
You gotta check out all the details. Above is actually the back of the house. Below is a shot of the front:
After the jump lots more photos. (more…)

Wow, this is very sad news. Polly’s was located at 1342 U Street, NW and was one of the first “new” cafes/restaurants to go into U Street. Just in from a reader:
“Tried to go to Polly’s this weekend — turns out they have closed! Tragedy! Do you have any information on this terrible, terrible occurrence?”
And it is confirmed on their Web site:
“Polly’s has closed.
We miss you already.
Check back here soon for a personal note…”
This is really shocking news.

MPD confirms the shooting and writes:
“…These acts of violence are being actively investigated and at this time do not appear to be random acts.
No one knows your neighborhood better than you do. If you see a vehicle, a person or anything that seems to stand out and is suspicious please make us aware. Even though many times what may seem like suspicious activity may turn out to be nothing we would much rather error on the side of caution and send a unit out to check it out. So please do not hesitate to call us. We would be more than happy to assist. And if you have and information about the recent events in the neighborhood regardless of how insignificant it may seem, please contact a member of the Fourth District or you can remain anonymous by calling 1-888-919-CRIME or 202-727-9099 or text tips to 50-411.”

Toucan Boutique will fill in the space formerly housing the Lettie Gooch boutique (now located 1517 U Street, NW). The Toucan Boutique site says:
“Toucan Boutique started with a mother-and-daughter team who wanted to bring warm, tropical fashion to the chillier climates of North America. They saw a need for unique, casual clothing, and were not satisfied with what they saw.”
Sounds like this will be a nice addition to 9th Street.

Horses Ass Award has to go the building at Sherman Ave and Park Road, NW. We’ve been teased with some progress but it has been in its current state for quite a while. It is truly an eyesore and worthy of this horses ass award.
And while I was on Sherman, I’ve walked by this building a million times (Sherman and Harvard), does anyone know what it exactly is?

“Dear PoP,
We always share thoughts on best bars, best drinks, etc. With it being so incredibly difficult to find good doctors, could we do a dear PoP and maybe start with dentists? I don’t know about anyone else, but I just get a list from my insurance company with absolutely no other information…”
This is a great idea. I went to the dentist last month and now believe I need to see a good therapist because I was so abused. Well I could prolly benefit from a good therapist anyway but that’s neither here nor there…
Can anyone recommend and a good dentist? And if possible mention which insurance they take?

It was saved last year but NBC Washington is reporting that it needs to be saved again:
“Rauch tells us that HBO — which has traditionally backed the movie event — hasn’t yet determined its 2010 budget. “Hence, our renewed effort to demonstrate how strongly the community supports and loves SOTG,” Rauch told us in an e-mail today.”

This house is located at 906 Q Street, NW:
The flier says:
“Charming, BRIGHT, semi-detached, 2 br 2 ba rowhouse in the HEART of it all-Logan/14th St/U St/Downtown! METRO, WHOLE FOODS 3-6 blocks away. Unique open floorplan on 3 levels. Lg renovated kitchen+breakfast rm w/ Viking range/hood, granite & cabinets galore. Open living/dining area on main level w/ hardwoods. Lrge master br upstairs features beautiful box window. High ceilings, cent A/C, NEW bath.”
You can find more info and photos here.
I think the renovation looks pretty sweet. Though I was surprised to see that it has only 2 bedrooms. Which do you think is better – 2 large bedrooms or 3 small bedrooms? For this house does $549,900 sound reasonable?

From a WMATA press release:
“Metro and its regional partners will participate in the first of three planned emergency response exercises on Feb. 24-25 at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station. The exercise involves a report of gunfire in the station, and will test the multi-jurisdictional coordination and response needed to mitigate a major incident in the Metro system.
The emergency response exercise will start at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station. The drill simulates gunfire between two shooters in the station. Multiple passengers are injured or killed.
The Metro Transit Police Department special response team will respond to the incident, along with the police, fire and emergency medical services personnel from the District of Columbia and Montgomery County, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The drill will test the integrated response and incident coordination of Metro, and police, fire and emergency medical services agencies from the District of Columbia and Montgomery County, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Did anybody check out the great parade Sunday afternoon? Unfortunately I got there just after 2pm and my view was pretty much the back of people’s heads. But there was certainly a great, fun vibe in the air. The kids looked like they were having an absolute blast. Did anyone stay to see/hear the gigantic firecracker? Happy Year of the Tiger!
As for photos, fortunately I have been saved by the PoPville flickr pool:
The above two photos are from mediaslave. More fantastic photos after the jump. (more…)
