This odd mural is located on the side of the Steak ‘n Egg Kitchen located on Wisconsin Ave just north of Tenleytown. What’s even more bizarre is that it is located right next to a big Obama mural?
The “I don’t speak English” seems to be a part of the original work and not just graffiti. Or do you think it is graffiti? What am I missing here? This is bizarre, right?

Work around here so hopefully it is true. Have never had one of their sandwiches.
It’s for sure not graffiti. i don’t know the story, but “I don’t speak english” is something of a slogan for them. they even sell merch with it: http://www.osmanandjoes.com/store.html
Yeah – to echo everyone else, this is something they all wear on their shirts and hats inside so while it may be offensive to some people, it certainly is not to the owners of Steak N Egg.
Haven’t been there since AU – great late night gorging.
this place is a must visit for anyone living in dc.
In that case here is the exact location – 4700 Wisconsin Ave NW
I was actually told by someone who worked there not to eat there under any circumstances because their kitchen was horrific- may have been disgruntled though.
Well the “kitchen” is right in front of the diners, so if you eat there to don’t have to wonder about it. It didn’t seem all that bad to me. The patty melt is pretty damn good.
from comments on yelp I gather that they sell merchandise that says “i don’t speak english” for tourists who don’t speak english to wear. extremely odd.
It’s apparently a saying one of the owners is fond of. “I don’t speak English; I speak American.” (the owners are originally from Sierra Leone)
The back of all the short order cooks tshirts say “I don’t speak english” in an effort to dissuade the young drunk kids who come in there for a late night meal at 2 in the morning from talking to them.
I love this place though.
Their “kitchen” is just a regular diner grill, which is about 5 feet in front of your face when you’re at the counter. I’ve been there many times, and never noticed anything out of the ordinary for a diner.
If you’re concerned, you can pretty much inspect it yourself before you order.
