I stopped by for a drink last night and learned some very interesting news – all of the crazy memorabilia is being removed. Apparently it belongs to a (possibly defunct) museum in Baltimore. I asked the bartender what the new theme would be and he said he wasn’t sure.
And here’s even crazier news from twitter – @HStreetDC writes:
“H St’s @RedandBlackBar and Palace of Wonder will have new partnership: Red and Black Palace. Great new burger joint, bigger bands
and
Joe Englert presenting plans to ANC’s ABL committee to combine Palace of Wonders and @RedandBlackBar.”
I also asked the bartender about this but he said he hadn’t heard about it. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.
Update: More from HStreetDC in the comments:
“Englert and Nicklas presented the merger to the ANC6a ABL committee on Tuesday night. They have to tear out a second floor wall between the two places and even out the floor levels to make one big performance space with a good stage. They can get national level bands with the additional space. The burlesque-type acts will still be featured several nights a week.
They’ll add a real kitchen with American food, featuring gourmet burgers. Food probably by Folkman and Cashion.
Why the ABL? Two liquor licenses, two voluntary agreements. They’ll have to merge them and that requires bureaucratic changes.”

Am I the only person who lives in the U Street Area to have a problem with the fact that...
XM radio, but probably only because I get it for free. 1st Wave, XMU, BBC or Backspin....
The point is... I don't need to leech Wi-Fi (I have it at home... unlike, apparently,...
Haven't listened to the radio in about 12 years. It's all iPod for me.
As a SAHM (stay at home mom) WAMU, 88.5, keeps me sane and able to have an intelligent...
Strange, I was just talking to the bartender at the Red and the Black last night having a beer there. He told me that the the palace of wonders are “trying new things”. I didn’t see a merger, even though they share the same stray cat.
Wonder if the burlesque show will stay.
Most of that memorabilia came from the Dime Museum in Baltimore. I thought that the Palace of Wonders bought a bulk of the collection outright, but maybe it was only on loan after the museum shut it’s doors.
looks like someone beat Frozen Tropics to the punch. PoP is everywhere, knows everything
H Street Great Street has a little more on this
That’s because HstreetDC goes to all the boring meetings so that YOU don’t have to.

This is going to be interesting to watch. Hm….
God, I hope H St doesn’t turn into another Adam’s Morgan.
what does that mean, “another adams morgan”?
Which word didn’t you understand?
phrase, not word.
Really? OK. By “another Adams Morgan”, the poster means “a neighborhood very similar to Adams Morgan in many characteristics.”
HTH.
without metro access i dont see it being another adam’s morgan… if you mean it’s going to turn to a place where a bunch of yupsters go to get wasted at various gimmicky bars then you’re a little late.
Adams Morgans Metro is about as far away as the Union Station, So if anything the Trolley will make this area into more of a yupster area. But that will take a decade.
.6 miles from woodley park metro to 18th and columbia
a little over 1 mile from union station to 13th and h.
18th & Columbia is the Northern most edge of the bars, and it was not always that way. The bars on H street reach all the way to 10th street already. That’s about .8 miles from the northern exit of Union Station. The distance is not that different, and H will soon have a Trolley.
I think this is a good thing. I’m a huge burlesque fan, but the current set-up at PoW is miserable.
I love huge burlesques, too. There’s one particularly chubby lady who puts on quite a show there.
This is super sad! The sideshow memorabilia was the best thing this bar had going for it–certainly while they had awesome performances, it was a horrible performance space, and the bar service was abysmal. Now sure how partnering with the Red and the Black, which was also an obnoxious performance space (standing room only, 45 minute sets from bands you’d never heard of, and a lovely patio that was rarely open), could possibly help. Would someone please tell Englert that his staffs are some of the worse in the city, and definitely need to be replaced? Look to DC9 or Phase 1 for how a dive bar should treat its customers.
We’re actually quite nice.
hope the patio stays closed as often as possible, i live across the alley from it and hate hearing the obnoxious banter. LOL.
H Street has been a commercial strip since the 1800s and was zoned commercial when the DC zoning codes were enacted in 1958.
If you object to that, why did you move to a house that backs up to a commercial strip? Didn’t you check the zoning and allowable usages before you bought or rented?
