So I’m not exactly sure what a sophist apartment is but this is one of the biggest condos I’ve ever seen. What do you think of the condo itself? It’s yours for $4,150,000.

  • jamison

While that apartment is absurdly cool, I just can’t see myself justifying a 4.2 million dollar apartment without its own helipad.

  • Chinatown guru

you have got to be kidding me… the person that owns that pad is driving a mid-90′s Honda Accord?!

    • Kate

      That’s probably the agents car … ?

    • RD

Those trying to appear and feel rich drive luxury cars. The rich drive 1996 Honda Accords and just get richer.

Although, the WEALTHY drive whatever the hell they want, and don’t drive it themselves unless they really want to.

  • Chinatown guru

Also, first to say $4,500/month is pretty steep for a condo fee (unless they also provide a driver for my ’92 Honda Accord).

  • JenDC

Walk by here all the time. Always wanted to peek inside, thank you. True porn.

  • I used to live across Wyoming Ave and was always curious about this building. This is such a petty complaint because the condo is otherwise fantastic, but I hate how they lined up all the tile joints in a few of the baths and the kitchen.

  • ruggeder countries

Is it worth $4,150,000? Maybe in some larger city, like New York or London, where grand apartments are common. But in a city like this, where you can find a huge, free-standing estate for less than this, no way.

  • daddyfatsacks

isn’t that the wrong zip code? I thought 20018 is waaay over in NE near the MD border.

  • question

What exactly do you get for $4500/month condo fee?

  • WDC

There is nothing about this apartment that isn’t hot. Best kitchen I’ve seen. Completely mouthwatering, and as house porn goes, hard core.

And to answer your question, a sophist apartment is one that’s all about wisdom. Or maybe they mean that this place was the setting/inspiration for one of Plato’s plays.

    • Kate

I think it could have even been 3 units. If you look at the way the great-room is broken up, you can almost imagine how it could have been 3 smaller living rooms from neighboring units.

  • M.Wanzer

I grew up near this building. I always thought the units were probably expensive, but I did not think that much. I feel like that must have been two units that someone combined. Just being familiar with buildings around that area, and having grown up in one, I can say that place is HUGE.

  • Eric in Ledroit

wow. that’s the most tastefully decorated house porn at that price range that i’ve ever seen. absolutely love how they made it look rich and sophisticated without completely overdoing it. amazing.

  • If I ever sell a $4.5M apartment I’ll make sure to hire a professional photographer who knows how to use a flash and keep himself out of the images.

  • ET

I have always wonder about the units – glad to know looks wise they are what I expected. Hose porn for me definitely.

I knew they were going to be expensive but I didn’t realize they were this expensive! I mean it is a great building, good location, available parking, and a good size but still. I know that someone wanting this kind of place as a condo isn’t necessarily someone who would want an estate – after all that hefty condo fee is paid to take care of stuff but considering the price of the unit and the price tag that is an expensive piece of real estate with a limited buying pool. This is not NYC with a deep and wide pool of people who make millions a year and want places like this.

  • squeals face

For $4.5 million, I’m a little concerned that I’d have to share that roof space with people who aren’t as wealthy or self-important as me.

    • TonyS

haha a class warrior! rock on man!

    • Andy (2)

For $4.5 million I’m more concerned about having to wait for an elevator and share it with my neighbors. I mean would it have been that tough to have a private elevator lobby?
Plus – where does the help live?

Kidding aside this was the most well decorated house porn in a long while – no crazy gold Louis XIV furniture or tacky 80′s porno furniture.

      • Jerry

You’ve got a point about the help. I don’t know ANYONE who lives in a place even remotely this expensive who doesn’t have full-time help on hire.

  • Scott

    It’s a 2 mil place
3 mil if they own the roof and don’t have to share.

4200 condo fee??? That’s a million dollar mortgage right there.

I did not see any pictures out the windows showing the view.

Nice place but it’s not 4 mill nice.

  • Anon

Its been listed and delisted several times. This means either its been on the market forever (over priced) or buyers fell through, and if you’re at this price point, buyers don’t fall through for financial reasons, so it could mean something’s wrong with this…

Overall, awesome place, but too high priced. I remember Metropole had a condo around 5 or 6 million and it had a deck that spanned the length of the entire building (did not sell, I believe they ended up breaking it up into pieces). This place has no deck access either.

  • Neighbor

I’ve been in another unit in this building and it was just as big. Maybe they aren’t all that big, but a lot of them are.

Former Councilmember Carol Schwartz lives in this building.

  • Isotopor

I didn’t think that man could live on beverages and condiments alone, but it appears that once you reach a certain net worth, that’s what you do.

    Seriously nice pad.

    • Jerry

Once you surpass a certain income bracket, you no longer have any use for such laborious tasks as eating solid food. The hired help injects all the necessary nutrients every morning.

  • Mark

There are either a lot of combined units in the building, or there are a several people who own multiple units. My only beef about this gorgeous apartment is that there’s probably a fair amount of road noise from Connecticut Ave, if you’re on the third floor. It’s a minor quibble.

    (Captcha: whooshes left)

  • pop-up owner

Very nice decorating… but sad with all that room the kitchen is so small. I think I could do with fewer gallaries, living rooms, video rooms, and sitting rooms. At our house the kitchen is the host heavily used room.

    Yes, I’m fat.

  • MK

All of the apartments in this building are enormous. I don’t know if it’s been cut up but most of the units are 5,400 sq. ft. with 5 bedrooms, 4 baths and servants quarters. That fee buys you any kind of service your heart desires. You don’t have to lift a finger. Lena Horne used to live there and various other senators, supreme court justices, high ranking military personnel, etc. You get the picture. When the building converted to condos in 1977, the units went for $150,000 to $240,000.

  • Anonymous

Ha. 4 million and the only thing in the giant fridge is cheap beer and coca-cola?

Nice place. Really nice place. But, 4 million. I doubt it.

  • IHeartShaw

3rd bathroom is my dream bathroom, hands down my favorite tile types. Kitchen soooooo not big enough. It’s not a “hang out kitchen” nor does the rest of the house look like it has ever been inhabited…

A lot of blank space for great entertaining, not a lot of functional space for a family to spend time in. Huge potential, though!

    • Andy (2)

I know – the 3rd bath is my favorite, followed by master, then the 2nd and the 4th is a very distant last place.

  • I was in the first floor apt. several years ago. Absolutely breathtaking and the layouts are fantastic. They flow much better than mos to the brownstones around here.

That said, the price is steep. I wouldn’t pay nearly that much for it. But if its empty nesters selling the house, or someone with kids who dont want the house ting, it would work for them.

  • EPF

I’m glad to know that for $4.5 mil 2 parking spaces convey and extra storage space…What could you possibly own that you couldn’t fit in 5500 sq feet?

  • u street girl

I have no idea what this is worth but I just died and went to condo heaven, glad to see the inside of that building is as gorgeous as the outside…

  • jealous condo dweller

    Pretty amazing digs.

But I couldn’t help but think that it just looks too empty and sterile. Rent some paintings and plants and more furniture. Give it some style. Make it look like someone lives there and throws fabulous parties the likes of which I’ll never see. The place is *beautiful* in every way–truly–but in these pics it just seems cavernous and…meh.

  • Ron

If you can afford this place, you sure as hell aren’t driving yourself around anymore. Those spaces are for the nanny and the guy who drives your Rolls.

  • Dan

No one mentioned the parquet floors? I know those are pervasive across this city, but I’d make sure they were swapped for something else before shelling out that much on a place anywhere in the world.

Locally I prefer NPR and WPFW. I also listen to Seattle's KEXP on the internet.
