Horse’s Ass Award – EasyGard House on Florida Ave

IMG_3379

I think folks have mentioned this before but I finally got a photo of it. It is the cylindrical house with the EasyGard wrap around it that has looked like this for years. It is right near the LeDroit Park metal sign on Florida Ave, NW.

Do you think the original renovators just went bankrupt? It is such a sweet property, I wish it would be auctioned off if it is going to remain in this state of disrepair.

Looks like 605 Florida Ave NW. It’s on DCRA’s Vacant Property List and they have *not* been granted an exemption from the higher taxes.

  • **This is NOT the owners’ fault** A few years ago, an SUV slammed into the property. I don’t know if a different contractor could have saved it, but it breaks my heart every time I walk by.

Ugh, what an awful story :(

  • drewlove

I know this is result of a tragedy, but the owners are architects with a lawyer son and they can’t get this finished? It’s been 4 years.

  • LeDroit/Bloomingdale Resident

I do hope something positive happens to this property in the near future. It is a shame that some drunk idiot took the lives of 2 individuals and drastically changed the life of another. It is like this unfinished building, destoyed from it original grandeur, is a reminder of that terrible evening. The fact that people lost their lives from this horrific event should be reason enough to restore this property. If the owners can’t do it, give someone else the opportunity to purchase the property and do so.

  • SingLikeSassy

Yeah. Isn’t this what homeowner’s insurance is for?

  • photodork

It stories like these (WaPo link) that remind me of why we need capital punishment in DC. I hope the driver rots.

  • I was going to post that an SUV crashed into that, but someone beat me to it. The front of the house collapsed, and they rebuilt it to that point and it stayed like that. I wouldn’t blame the owners without digging a little deeper. Since they rebuilt it in an un-historic way, maybe DC stopped the progress with a stop work order.

  • Ragged Dog

    Yeah, that sucks.

I know it’s a tragedy, but it’s time to move on. 4 years folks. Just sell the thing at auction and walk away. You’ll get a decent price for the land.

I’ve seen that ever since living nearby and wondered how it collapsed so spectacularly. It’s a really sad story, I had just assumed it was structural problems.

It’s too bad they can never rebuild the solid masonry walls and given historical preservation it might be impossible to tear down completely. I hope something is done with it though, since a few more of the properties further east on Florida are finally getting worked on again.

If your curious, according to the DC Superior Court Docket the driver, Jesus Flores-Cardenas, was eventually sentenced to 38 months for involuntary manslaughter. Charges of Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Assault, and Destruction of Property were dropped. Sentencing was May 2007. It looks like he was also summoned by State Farm insurance in November of 2009, so insurance stuff might be progressing slowly.

9 out of 10 of these ‘Horse’s Ass’ awards go to builders who do shoddy, rush jobs. Now here’s one that ISN’T rushing to build a crappy facade….and they are still called a horse’s ass! Every day this website seems more and more like a place for people who love to complain simply for the sake of complaining.

Maybe instead of lynch-mobbing people who don’t even know what is being said about them, the prince should contact the owners and let them defend themselves. They are architects, I’m sure they would love to talk about the reconstruction process.
