I’m all for same-sex marriage, but I don’t really get the whole point of the Humanist Judaism sect that Blecher is a part of.
What’s the point of a religion that doesn’t believe in God or any kind of higher power?
Your post got me thinking… I don’t believe in any higher power, and I don’t belong to any organized religion, but this “humanistic Judaism” sounds pretty interesting. It sounds like it is more about what Judaism represents as _people_, not religiously. I especially like this thought: “People possess the power and responsibility to shape their own lives independent of supernatural authority”. Now this I could get on board with. Just from skimming the article it sounds like a group of pretty open minded people.
I think this is better than any organized religion out there that perpetuates the beliefs of Jesus Christ and “God”. It actually allows you to think for yourself.

This is actually not that uncommon. Let’s face it. Many of us growing up went to church/temple, etc., not because of deeply-held beliefs about the tenets of our faith, but because the ritual and ceremony of organized religion gave us a sense of belonging and a way to commemorate life’s significant milestones. For many of us (certainly many more than are likely to admit it), religion is really less about faith than it is about community.
I never went to church/temple or anything like that growing up, so I just always thought people went for the religion aspect of it, in addition to the community.
I can do with the community, but if said community actually believed the stories told at church, then I wouldn’t want anything to do with that community. Not hating, just stating from where my mindset comes. That’s why I really like the sound of Humanistic Judaism.

Typical thinking of all white liberals on this site. Many are gay themselves, therefore they are going to support their sexual life style.
