As regular to this site know, I can get obsessed with windows from time to time. This one in Bloomingdale blew me away. Check out the details in the corners. I’ve never seen one like this before. Pretty fresh.

Well I know it’s not a tragedy but I was very sad to see one of my favorite signs in the city replaced at 315 K Street, NW. The current one is located above and the classic which was recently taken down is located below. I mean, there is no debate which is cooler, right?

Hello everyone,
I have heard from Councilmember Graham regarding the series of hearings occurring now, regarding the WMATA budget shortfall and the potential elimination of the Yellow Line extension and late night hours on weekends as ways to address the shortfall. As someone who fought hard on the Metro Board for both late night weekend hours and the Yellow Line extension, Councilmember Graham voted not to include either provision as items to be considered. However he was out voted.
WMATA has proposed numerous options to address their budget shortfalls, many of which will directly impact the DC neighborhoods that were hardest hit by original delays in constructing the system. WMATA is proposing to:
End the Yellow Line Extension from Mount Vernon – Fort Totten
End the Yellow Line entirely at 9:30 during the day and all day weekends
Close the 10th & U entrance at U Street/AACWM/Cardozo stop on weekends
Close the 8th & R entrance at Shaw/Howard U entrance on weekends
End service on weekends at midnight at all stations.CLICK HERE TO SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION OPPOSING THESE CUTS! http://www.midcitylife.com/action/#petition
While WMATA is holding a meeting on April 1, at All Souls Church at 16th & Harvard, these cuts are not an April fools joke, they are on the table for real, right now, and your voice is needed to make sure they don’ happen!

This apartment is located at 15th and Chapin Streets, NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“- Walking distance to Metro (Green Line – U St. station), shopping and restaurants
- Open kitchen design with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops
- Washer/dryer
- Large sunny energy-efficient windows
- 900 square feet
- Secure building
- Off-street parking option is available
- Great landlord and neighbors”
I’m posting this one becuase I’ve walked by the building dozens of times and was curious to see some photos of the units. Assuming you get a roomate is $2500 reasonable for a 2 bedroom? If you’re not looking for a roomate, I was also intrigued by this studio for $1300 located at 16th and Park Road, NW.

“Dear PoP,
I noticed a party of 5 people entering the vacant (and what appears somewhat renovated) large tan house located on the corner of Park and 11th (across from Red Rocks). It looked like they were being given a tour.
Do you know the current status of this building? I’ve assumed for a while renovations were made at one point (all the windows are brand new), but I assumed the owner had gone under and ceased operations.
With the building adjacent building at 11th and Monroe rumored as purchased, I’m guessing this would make this property very worth while.”
Thanks to Kevin Wood for letting me know that the property is back on the market. You can see the listing here. It’s yours for $1,500,000.

This is an insane before and after from binklesworth. He writes:
“Passed by this on the bus, found the “before” shot on Google Street View. Somewhere up 5th around the 5900 block, NW.”

This building is located at 3500 New Hampshire Ave, NW:
The flier says:
“Detached 2-unit building in heart of Columbia Heights comprised of two 1BR 1BA apartments, each with separate kitchen and spacious living room, gas/baseboard heat, & wall unit cooling. Each unit is separately metered for electric & gas, but there is NO CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY – call for details. Tenants month-to-month.”
You can find more info here.
Even though there are no interior photos, I’m super curious what you think about this property. Given all the info above does $299,000 sound reasonable?

“Dear PoP,
Day and night, raw sewage seeps from a recently demolished building into an alley on the 800 block of Kennedy Street, NW, in Brightwood Park, causing the foulest stench to fill the air. This has been occurring nonstop since JANUARY. The unmistakable smell of sewage can be smelled all the way to 9th and Kennedy. While Council-member Bowser’s office has been helpful in trying to pressure the city to rectify this problem, it has gone on for far too long. Exposure to raw sewage has health risks that the city has not addressed with so much as a sign. I witness children and adults walk through this spill every day, not knowing what it is.
DCMud reported in January 2009 that 809 Kennedy NW was set for demolition: http://dcmud.blogspot.com/2009/01/brightwood-tenement-set-for-demolition.html
New System Demolition and Excavation was reported to carry out the demolition.
New System Demolition and Excavation said that the owner of the building had been fined and it was their responsibility to clean and fix the issue — the owners did not pay NSDE what they are owed, so the city (DCRA) will be rolling out some sort of bidding process to get contractors to complete the work.
I spoke to the owners of several Kennedy Street businesses on Tuesday, March 24. One in particular said that his business had been damaged by fewer customers coming in to his restaurant due to the stench adjacent to his establishment. There is also a nagging feeling that our community is being ignored because it has a largely Spanish speaking, immigrant population.
On Wednesday, March 24, I made phone calls to the DC Department of the Environment, where I was referred to Bob Emwanta, and later to Sylvester Mode (pronounced moe-DAY) where I left a message.
I then made a phone call to Chris Davis at the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services, who said that he was currently awaiting a response from WASA on the matter. He, too, had experienced the stench first-hand after his office conducted “Operation Fix-It” in the community. I asked him to keep Robert Idlett from my councilwoman’s office in the loop as well.
And still the stench fills our block.”
Wow, this is completely unacceptable. Which agency should be pressured to get this fixed immediately?

A new coffee house and bar, The Independent, is coming to Shaw. It is exciting to see new places continue to sprout up east on U Street/Florida Ave. Many of you will surely recognize the location as the former home to renowned urologist Dr. Edward H. Saunders.
The details from the alcohol permit sound very promising, particularly a significant summer garden. The alcohol permit says:
“Coffee House, bar lounge, 199 seats and total occupancy of 235 on first floor and storage on first and basement. Summer Garden with 75 seats and a total occupancy of 90.”
Think it’ll be like a Tryst-like establishment?
