IMG_2931

The museum is located at 201 18th Street, NW (near Constitution Ave). Their Web site says:

“The building housing the museum was originally designed by noted architect Paul Cret in 1912 as the residence for the Secretaries General of the Organization of American States. Today as a museum, the building offers a warm and intimate atmosphere to enjoy art. The Art Museum of the Americas is located just off the National Mall at 201 18th Street, N.W., and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM (We are closed on federal holidays and on Good Friday). In the meantime, we invite you to explore these pages to learn about our collections, our current and past exhibitions, and the various services we offer. Join us in celebrating the rich visual traditions of the American continent. Most of all, enjoy your visit and come back often.”

Anyone ever check them out? Leo?

You should go inside – there is a tunnel that runs all the way to the Organization of American States building (Which is also one of the sweetest buildings in DC – there is a tree in the Atrium that was planted by President Taft in 1910!). The tunnel features the “Roots of Peace” murals painted by the Uruguayan Artist, Carlos Páez Villaró. It is supposed to be the longest painted tunnel in North America – but that’s kind of a stupid claim to make, because nobody would even care if it really WAS the longest painted tunnel in North America. Anyway – everyone should go check it out.

this place is super cool.their courtyard is one of the nicer oasis downtown. plus theres this crazy wicked terra cotta covered foyer in the back. here’s part of it: http://twitpic.com/ls8wc

  • The courtyard is beautiful, and I saw a great show about post-junta Chilean artists there.

saw an installation of work by oswaldo guayasamín there a couple years ago. fantastic artist (if you ever get to quito, ecuador, check out the museum on the grounds of his old home).

Yeah, I’ll echo all previous posts. This is a pretty cool museum/grounds. Not huge and not overloaded with exhibits and displays. It’s a great lunch hour diversion if you’re in the area around Const & 18th NW.
