Thanks to PoPville Flickr user Dallas Lillich for uploading these photos. Word on twitter is that Fenty spokesperson, Sean Madigan’s car was hit (it was parked and empty at the time).

Las Placitas is located at 517 8th Street, SE on Barracks Row. I hear that some of the chefs at nearby Barracks Row eateries grab food from this spot. That seems like a pretty high endorsement. You can see their menu here. Any fans? Any must order items?

We learned that the Mt. Pleasant library has closed for extensive renovations and that a temporary library would open up on Mt. Pleasant Street for approximately 17 months. As you can see it is located at 3162 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW near the 7-11. When I stopped by yesterday it had a nice open layout with multiple computer stations. The computer stations, around a dozen or so, not seen in the photo below were already nearly full. I think for a temp library this one looks pretty good.

Lots of folks have been inquiring about the status of Meridian Pint coming to 11th and Park Road, NW. I’m happy to report that the place is progressing nicely and they will be open in about a month (definitely in time for the World Cup). I was able to take a bunch of photos of the progress.

Adams Morgan represent! The First Lady and some Congressional Spouses will be painting a mural with students from the nearby Sitar Center. Super cool. Stay tuned for photos after the event.

Thanks to all the readers who wrote in about the new signage here. This is of course the old Rumberos location in the Tivoli at 3345 14th St, NW. I chatted with the GM who said there will be a soft opening Sunday evening and they will be gearing up for a big party on Cinquo de Mayo on Wed.

Before this proper sign went up on Wed. the coming soon banner had been taken down and I received a half dozen emails asking if they were still coming. As the new sign demonstrates, they’re definitely still coming to this space in the Park Place building above the Petworth metro. I’m told that the build out is very far along so we could see them open up in about a month or so.

DC is definitely giving bikers some serious respect. I’d never seen signs like these before. It was pointing to bike parking in the DC USA’s lot in Columbia Heights.

First graffiti art in Georgetown and now a little risqué call box art in Kalorama. My preconceptions are getting shattered…

Does anyone know what restaurant is going into the space next to the (soon to be) Pitango Gelato place in Penn Quarter? They put some signage in the window as a tease. Next door the Pitango looks fairly close to opening:

This storefront near the Black Cat has been vacant forever. Apparently it used to be a furniture/restoration store back in the day. Thanks to a few readers for sending word on some movement. When I stopped by there were no workers there but I did see a permit in the window which says the proposed use will be retail or wholesale. Any guesses/speculation?

Just a reminder that the PoP spring happy hour is tomorrow night at Social (14th and Meridian Streets, NW – Columbia Heights Metro). It’s fixing to be a good time. I’ve picked the special drink suggested by Minnie:
“How about a gin sidecar? Equal parts gin, Triple Sec, lemon/lime juice. A sprig of mint if you’re feeling fancy.
And of course, you’ll need a snappy name. If it’s made with lemon, it’s the Yellow Line; if it’s made with lime, it’s the Green Line. Yum!”
We’ll call it the Green Line and Minne you get a PoP t-shirt for picking the winner. Also $1 from this drink will be donated to CentroNia (http://www.centronia.org/html/about_us.html).
Looking forward to meeting many of you!

Ed. Note: The photo above was taken from the photography competition ‘Portraits of DC’. The 51 winners are exhibited at Social and they had an opening reception last night though you’ll be able to see them tomorrow night. It was packed! Photos from the event after the jump. (more…)
