This apartment is located at 1610 Park Road, NW:

The Craigslist ad says:

“Exceptional Value!! Two blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro, Metro Bus at your door. The Parkhill Apartments is located in a dynamic and culturally diverse neighborhood. Adams Morgan – Columbia Heights – Mount Pleasant —–Looking for a great apartment? Nightlife a block away and convenient shopping.

Renovated One bedrooms, and studios brand new full kitchen – refinished bathrooms, large walk in closets and a minimal fee for air condition.”

Hmm, from looking at the photos it is not clear what exactly was renovated… But the location is pretty great. Does $1345 for the one bedroom and/or $1185 per month for the studio sound reasonable?

Dear PoP – Contractor or handyman? Or neither?

Photo by PoPville flickr user Rukasu1

“Dear PoP,

I just bought a condo in Adams Morgan, and the kitchen is in desperate need of an update. I know you’ve covered contractors before, but I’m not sure if that’s actually what I need. I’m hoping to put in a new backsplash, floor, and countertop. I’ll also be installing new appliances, which will involve creating a laundry hookup (for one of those combo washer/dryers) as well as a dishwasher hookup — the kitchen currently has neither — so some plumbing will definitely be necessary.

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who would/could do all that? I’m afraid it may be too small a job for a general contractor since there’s no real construction, but I obviously want someone skilled/properly licensed who will do good work! If it’s feasible I could just hire out separately for everything, which would be nice since it’s probably cheaper, but I work pretty long hours so I’m worried that would be difficult. Thanks for any guidance/recommendations you can provide!”

Some recommendations were made here. Who do you guys think would be good/necessary for a job(s) like this?

The flier says:

“Rarely available “Cooke’s Row” is an historic opportunity. This Second Empire residence has undergone an exquisite restoration and renovation. Soaring entertaining spaces, massive gourmet kitchen. Luxurious master suite plus four bedrooms and family room. Au pair suite plus substantial storage/cellar. Large, private garden and terrace. 3-car parking.”

You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.

Well, I think I’ve found some proper house porn again. All I can say is enjoy. It’s yours for $6,500,000.

Ed. Note: I was chatting with a neighbor who was telling me some interesting history about these homes. Apparently they were built for the daughters of the first Gov. of DC or something like that. I was looking for a heritage sign but didn’t find one…

Dear PoP – Tenant Rights

Photo by PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

“Dear PoP,

My DC apartment building has been sliding into deeper and deeper disrepair, yet rent continues to go up. My specific question is about access to water. My building cuts off the water to entire building at least once a month – but usually more than once a month. We get a notice posted outside the front door the day before this happens and we’re told to not expect water from 9:30am-4:30pm while some maintenance is being done. This is seriously inconvenient when you’re on an erratic schedule (like myself being a student about to defend my thesis) and you only know the night before that the water will be turned off the next day and you will now have to change your schedule around to shower, do laundry, and cook and clean.

What rights do I have as a tenant when my water is being turned off during the day with little notice and this is occurring more than once a month?”

I realize this might be better for legal question of the week but I already submitted one for this week. So has anyone dealt with a similar situation? If so how did you deal with it? Does it say anywhere in the lease how often utilities may be disrupted? Obviously in emergencies there is nothing that can be done but does shutting off the water once or more a month sound reasonable?

Judging Restaurants – Jaleo and Oyamel

Jaleo is located at 480 7th Street, NW (with two other locations in Bethesda and Crystal City). The Web site says:

“Under the direction world-reknowned chef José Andrés, Jaleo’s menu offers diners an extensive selection of more than 60 different hot and cold tapas, little dishes, reflecting the rich regional diversity of classical and contemporary Spanish cuisine. The bar boasts a wide variety of Spanish red, white and rosé wines, available by the glass, as well as a selection of sherries.”

Since Oyamel is so nearby (401 7th Street, NW) and also owned by the same group that owns Jaleo, I thought I’d ask which folks like better. I realize that Jaleo is Spanish and Oyamel is Mexican but if you had to choose between the two, which would you say is better or are they equally good?

Cafe Green Finally Has Soft Opening

Cafe Green is located at 1513 17th St, NW and takes up two floors. There had been a coming soon sign at this spot for ages, so when I walked by last weekend I was, happily, shocked to see them open. I was able to chat with one of their owner and GM, Jimmy Cooney (the other partner owns Java Green located at 1020 19th St, NW).

Upstairs dining area

So here’s what I learned:

They will be having their grand opening in late May but they “will be having a big opening party this coming Saturday, May 1st, from 11 am to 11 pm. A Gift Card Raffle, Music, and Specials on the menu will round out the day”.

They will soon have a full bar including liquor, wine including organic wine, beer, juice and coffee.

Below is a desert and beverage menu that will have some minor changes:

Café Green Beverage Dessert Menu 4.19.10

Below is the dining menu:

They will soon be serving brunch as well.

A few more photos after the jump including a photo of the soft opening menus. (more…)

WBJ Says Z Burger Coming to Columbia Heights

Woah, don’t know how I missed this last Friday. Thanks to Jeff for sending the link. Washington Business Journal reported on Friday:

Z-Burger’s on the move. The company is planning locations in Southwest and White Marsh, and is negotiating leases in Columbia Heights and near the Navy Yard as well.”

Any fans of Z Burger? I’ve never actually eaten at one. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes peeled to see where in Columbia Heights they might open up. Maybe this solves the mystery of 3313 11th St, NW

Social Safeway Looking Good!

The Social Safeway located at 1855 Wisconsin Ave NW opens May 6th. It’s looking good. The store is considered a ‘lifestyle store’ and you can learn what that means here.

And if you need a primer on Safeway nicknames you can find them here.

Lawn Decoration of the Day

I’m getting a bit of a Caroline Kennedy vibe from this one. But I tell ya, if I lived here I have no doubt that I’d forget about it and coming home late at night this sculpture would scare the crap outta me.

I have not lost my love for tree stumps. And a tree stump used as a planter will automatically garner ‘garden of the day’ honors.
