Here’s a couple of 16th Street, NW classics that we’ve probably seen before in some capacity. They are looking phenomenal. If you had to pick which do you like better?

Thanks to all who wrote in after last week’s Has EatMore Fried Chicken Closed? post (Georgia and Quincy Streets, NW). It looks like they’ve gone the way of KFC and are de-emphasizing the fried part. I still like the name but I’m not sure if EatMore Chicken has the panache of EatMore Fried Chicken. Or perhaps they just haven’t put up the ‘Fried’ part of the sign yet…

Thanks to a reader for sending the word. I also happened to note that the entrance was looking good at 457 Massachusetts Ave, NW. You can sign up for their alerts here (careful music plays).

Also of note nearby, the one holdout building (formerly home to the proposed Ledo Pizza) now has a for sale sign, I wonder if the owners regret not selling earlier…

Woah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a one level row house before. Do you think it originally had two levels and one was removed later on. I originally though the one level structure and roof deck belonged to the adjacent two level row house but when I took a closer they had two separate addresses.

And nearby is a pretty cool back of a row house. They were both found in Capitol Hill.

When I first saw the above sign at the gas station at 15th and U Streets, NW in August, ’07 I wrote that God Does Exist. Now the New York Times writes:
“In a new study, he reports that young male recreational athletes who drank a syrup-flavored ice slurry just before running on a treadmill in hot room could keep going for an average of 50 minutes before they had to stop. When they drank only syrup-flavored cold water, they could run for an average of 40 minutes.”
And I just thought they tasted good.

This rental is located at 1230 Irving Street NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“Two bedrooms/one bathroom. Tile floors through-out, baseboard heating, washer/dyer, dishwasher, windows in every room. Nice & clean apartment in the heart of Columbia Heights.”
Does $1,900/month sound reasonable with a roomate? There’s another similar set up at 1027 Park Rd, NW which is going for $1895/month. Which do you think is the better location?

Those who follow DDOTDC on twitter have eagerly been awaiting their “big streetcar news” that they said was coming this morning. Well here it is:
“District residents, workers and visitors will soon get their first opportunity to step aboard one of the District’s new modern streetcars. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host the DC Streetcar Showcase from Wednesday, May 5 through Saturday, May 8, 2010 at City Center DC, the site of the old convention center.
“We are getting closer and closer to putting streetcars back on the streets of the District, and we know there are a lot of people who are just as excited about their return as we are,” said DDOT Director Gabe Klein. “This will be a great opportunity for them to see a modern streetcar up close, inside and out, and to learn more about how they will operate in the District.”
After a 50 year hiatus, streetcars will once again operate in the nation’s capital in 2012, and at the showcase next week Mayor Fenty and city officials are expected to make some significant announcements about the program and other transit services in the District. In addition to the Streetcar program, DDOT also operates the DC Circulator bus system and a bikesharing network.
Showcase Details
The District owns three streetcars, which are currently stored at Metro’s rail yard in Greenbelt, Maryland. For the showcase, DDOT will transport one of the vehicles downtown where it will be set on temporary tracks in Lot B of City Center DC. The public will be able to access the lot from the intersection of 9th and H Streets, NW, which is just north of the Gallery Place Metro station on the Green and Yellow lines.
Admittance to the Showcase is free. The event schedule is as follows:
• Wednesday, May 5, 11am – 7pm
• Thursday, May 6, 11am – 7pm
• Friday, May 7, 11am – 7pm
• Saturday, May 8, 11am – 5pm
Continues after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,
Does anyone have experience with lead paint removal? We have some original windowsills with chipping lead paint. The windows and frames are newish and not creating any lead dust when we open or close them; it’s just the sills. Altogether, we have about 12 feet of 4-inch-wide windowsill/original trim with cracked paint. Because the paint is not intact (and we have a toddler), leaving it in place is not an option. The question is how to remove it. A few people have recommended something like Peel Away, which keeps the paint wet and avoids the problem of scattering lead-tainted dust throughout the house. Lead paint is made to seem so dangerous, though, that the DIY option isn’t as appealing as it might otherwise be. Another option is a certified lead abatement professional, of which there don’t seem to be many in the area (according to EPA’s National Lead Information Center). That also sounds like a little bit of overkill for what’s really a fairly small job. If anyone has some advice or experience to share, we’d greatly appreciate it.”
I seem to recall this has come up in the past but I can’t remember if anyone recommended someone?

I was psyched to see this house for sale because I walk past it all the time. The inside does not disappoint. What do you think of the house itself? Any chance they’ll be able to get $849,000 for it?

“Dear PoP,
So a group of my friends all made New Year’s resolutions to finally make wills – and here is it late April. If crazed DUI bicyclists happen to kill any of us, our families are tangled at best, screwed at worst. Don’t know if it’s a topic for Griffin & Murphy, or just the general Poputariat, but I know there are lots of homeowners here – what have others done about wills? Do you really need a lawyer? Can you just write something up and file it somewhere? What about online programs or places like Legal Zoom?”
Anyone out there have a Will? Anyone do it without a lawyer? Related: How ’bout a ‘living will’ or when to have them pull the plug in the hospital?

Given all the talk about Waffle House and Florida Avenue Grill I wanted to let folks know about another option that’s been up and running for years – Lawrence’s II located at 3937 Georgia Ave NW (at Shepherd). An indicator that this might be a place worth checking out – you can often see cops getting breakfast/lunch there. Again, we’re not talking fine dining but if you want some good greasy grub stop in this unassuming corner spot. Any other fans out there?

“I was born in Poland, but I grew up in Italy. In 1958, I was molested by a Catholic priest at the age of 15. He was the priest of a small village where I was camping in the mountains on Italy. To this day, I still do not know the name of the priest. He offered to tutor me in Latin and then he molested me. In my case, it was only once. I can’t imagine what it is like for people who are molested more than once. I was so traumatized. It was literally like being hit by lightning.
“After that, I was totally crushed and helpless. My first thought was that I ruined my life forever. My personality changed. I started to stutter and it stunted my growth. It made me insecure and withdrawn. When I went back to high school, people used to ask me why I was so sad all of the time. I used to tell them that my best friend died to get them off my back. The worse thing is that I blocked it out of my mind for 39 years.
“When I was 20, I left home and went to Canada by myself to get away from everything. When my younger brother wanted to join me, he was not able to get a Canadian visa, so we moved to Washington in 1963 because the American government was still issuing visas. We served in the U.S. Army together and then I went on to work in construction. I never really made anything of my life as I was so traumatized by my molestation. In my head, I was always a dish washer. My father had two Ph.Ds and a good job in Italy. I disappointed everyone in life, my parents, my wife, and my children. Continues after the jump. (more…)

I’m gonna oversimplify this but in my mind U Street/14th Street, NW, Georgia Ave, NW and H St, NE were commercially decimated by the 1968 riots. U Street/14th Street, NW has had an amazing renaissance. H St, NE is slowly on it’s way to an amazing renaissance. Georgia Ave, especially lower Georgia Ave is lagging very far behind. [ DC Mud recently highlighted some of the avenue's woes.] So I have a couple of questions – is it gonna take the installation of street cars for lower Georgia Ave to become an attractive investment? Is lower Georgia Ave not gonna be touched by investors until H St, NE gets saturated and/or becomes too expensive?
My mind is rambling so bear with me. I walked around H St, NE over the weekend and during the day, to me, it felt absolutely deserted (H St itself not the surrounding neighborhoods). I suspect that feeling/reality may change when some of the street rail construction is cleaned up. So an unrelated question is – do you think H St, NE will ever have some daytime attractions or do you think it will remain a nighttime only destination?
Ed. Note: I think the new H St, NE signs in the photo above look fantastic.
