Biergartenhaus to Open Soon!

In a city that seems to have an endless supply of new restaurant/bar openings, this one is definitely the most eagerly anticipated in my circles. Biergarten haus is located at 1355 H Street NE.

In the meantime don’t forget about Old Europe at 2434 Wisconsin Ave, NW in Glover Park which has been serving the city schnitzel since 1948…

Should You Be Able to Get a D.U.I. while on a Bike?

From NBC Washington:

Don’t drink and drive; don’t booze and bike. The D.C. Court of Appeals ruled Friday that the city’s ban on driving under the influence also applies to bicyclists.

According to the law, drivers are prohibited from “operating a vehicle” under the influence of alcohol.

In January 2007, Baker Everton was arrested for riding his bike under the influence. According to the appeals court, police found him shouting next to his bike and barely able to stand. Officers warned him not to get on the bike, but he did it anyway. He then hit a child in a crosswalk before losing control and falling over.

Well it sounds like this guy should definitely have been arrested for something. I think arresting people like this should probably fall under public intoxication and/or disturbing the peace. I’m not sure DUI for those that ride bikes is such a good idea because I know folks who specifically ride bikes so they don’t have to drive to bars. I’d way rather have drunk people on bikes than driving cars…

Meet DC’s Newest Food Truck – El Floridano

Thanks to Paul for sending the good word about DC’s newest food truck. I swear I’m not becoming obsessed by food trucks, it’s just a coincidence. The truck is an old Postal Office truck that is got fixed up to transport food. I was lucky enough to run into the owner, Stefan. He told me that should all the permits come through, he hopes to be on the road in a couple of weeks. (I’ll update when the exact date is known.) He has spent a lot of time in Miami and thus the name El Floridano. The menu was inspired by his search for the perfect Cuban sandwich. Here’s the menu:

Couple of things to note, The Fidel is not named after Fidel Castro but a friend of Stefan’s named Fidel. Also note that there will be vegan options.

Sweet artwork on the truck as well:

UPDATE They can be followed on twitter here @FLmeetsDC

Wild Turkey Seen in Poplar Point

Well this is totally wild. Thanks to Carly & Art for uploading this shot to the PoPville flickr pool. They write:

“One of at least three we were able to see. Poplar point, Anacostia River, SE Washington, DC”

I think this tops the hawk.

Construction Begins on Future Manny & Olga’s Pizza at 3624 Georgia Ave, NW

Back in Nov. we first saw signs that a Manny & Olga’s was coming to 3624 Georgia Ave, NW (a few doors south of Looking Glass Lounge). This is the first time I’ve actually seen construction begin. It’s nice to see a little progress after so many months. Though as you can still, there is still a ways to go:

Dear PoP – What’s Going on with the Old Cluck U Chicken Space on Georgia Ave?

“Dear PoP,

I saw some workers repainting the former Cluck-U Chicken space at Georgia and Columbia. And the for-sale sign is gone. Do you know what is going in there?”

This is of course the Cluck U that had the famous mural which was painted over. Looks like it’s gonna be a nail salon and spa.  I’m also gonna have to file this under – it’s better than a vacant storefront…

Garden of the Day

I feel like this is something that I technically could accomplish but would never have the patience to plant. Anyone with a green thumb wanna help me plant a garden? If so, mention it to me at the PoP happy hour this Thursday the 29th at Social (14th and Meridian Streets, NW).

Wild Porch Sculpture

Door of the Day

I’m gonna file this one in the less is more category. There was something about the subtle stain/paint that made it pretty impressive.

House of the Day (Re-PoP)

This is the house that I’ve never seen in person but have been always been fascinated by. Previously we had seen a low resolution cell phone photo. I was super psyched to see this high res shot uploaded to the PoPville flickr pool by Lalaroo. If memory serves I believe it is from the Brookland neighborhood.

Dolcezza Opens in Dupont Circle, Grand Opening Celebration Postponed Until May 9

Good news and bad news here. The good news it that the new space at 1704 Connecticut Ave, NW has opened and looks great. The bad news is that the grand opening festivities that were supposed to take place tomorrow have been postponed until May 9th. But the good far outweighs the bad here.

They also have a great decoy piece:

And in addition to gelato you also have coffee options:

More Chairs for Banneker Swimming Pool Please

I know we talk about more serious issues than this but indulge me this once. I’m a huge fan of the Banneker Swimming Pool located at the 2800 block of Georgia Ave, NW. It’s come to my attention that there is a new Facebook group that is trying to get some more chairs for the pool. I think that’d be great. Not sure how much it’ll help but it can’t hurt to sign on.

And on that note, have a great weekend!

Judging Pop Ups and an Awesome Paint Job

It’s a bit early but I think this one on 12th Street, NW just south of U St is gonna fit in nicely. How much extra room do you think they’ll provide, maybe it’s an optical illusion but it looks kinda low to me?

I’m a huge fan of trompe l’oeil.   And my friend Sean has done it again. I thought his before and after photos of these beams were awesome:
