Thanks again to the reader who sent in these great garage doors from Mt. Pleasant. She even found some cool art inside one as well:

This is def. a great house but I’m giving it house of the day honors because I have a question. It falls in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city (Woodland-Normanstone) yet it still has window bars on the top two floors. Don’t you move to a nice neighborhood so you don’t need window bars on the top 2 floors?

Michael Neibauer of WBJ has the scoop:
“A deal to put a Giant supermarket at Third and H streets NE two blocks from Union Station is imminent, sources tell the Washington Business Journal.”
There was a lot of speculation as to which grocery store would arrive. Folks were, understandably, pining for a Harris Teeter or Whole Foods. Those would certainly be great. And I know not everyone will agree with me, but I’ve been a big fan of the Giant in Columbia Heights. So overall I’d say this a great addition to the H Street, NE corridor.
Does anyone think Harris Teeter will ever open up another location in DC?
Update: Dang I forgot Harris Teeter is opening one up at 1st and M St, NE.

I’ve gotten numerous emails about something going on at 3313 11th Street, NW (between Lamont and Park). Folks have been hearing that “something is coming that will make the community happy”. I’ve heard the same thing from about 4 or 5 different folks. Well I was able to track down the new owner and am happy to confirm that something is coming! Sadly, deals have not been completely signed so we’ll have to wait a bit longer for details. But given the fact that there are new experienced owners, I’m very excited that this vacant building (in a prime location) will soon be fixed up. Stay tuned!

From METRO:
Customers can expect lengthy delays of up to 40 minutes this weekend (April 23-25) as old track components are replaced on the Red, Blue and Orange lines, causing inbound and outbound trains to take turns sharing one track on portions of the rail system.
Riders planning to take the Red, Blue and Orange lines to area sports events and activities this weekend should add up to 40 minutes to their travel times. The Washington Nationals play at Nationals Park on April 23, 24, and 25, the Washington Capitals play at the Verizon Center on April 23, and there is an Earth Day Climate Rally on the National Mall on April 25.

This rental is located at 1515 U Street, NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“Huge open space in living area. Sun drenched apartment boasts an entire wall of windows, sleeping loft, harwood floors, fabulous bathroom! Top floor unit in vibrant U Street Corridor. Steps to restaurants, shops, night life. So close to the U Street/Cardozo green & yellow line metro. Open showing, Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 6:30 p.m., email chatelrentals@gmail.com for any questions or to let us know you are planning to attend the showing. No pets.”
Well this is one of my favorite parts of the city but holy cow have prices gone up. I wanted to show this one because it is an interesting loft space. But the kitchen and other photos don’t really impress too much. Now as I said, obviously the location is terrific but does $2,195 a month sound reasonable for a apartment like this?

“Dear PoP,
Yesterday as I was driving to work heading East on Monroe from 14th, there was construction filling in old potholes from New Hampshire Ave to 13th so traffic was diverted.
I was the first car at the light, waiting with my blinker on to turn, and from the opposite side of the street where the construction was, a green mini van darted into traffic when the light changed and I was in the process of turning. After hitting my horn to alert him, as he was not at the intersection when the light changed, and did not use his blinker to indicate where he was heading, he proceeded to follow me for several blocks around Petworth.
At one point I looked back to see if he was still there, and he was holding a badge towards the windshield. At first I thought I should stop, but luckily my morning coffee kicked in!
He was driving an unmarked green mini van, and there were not any emergency lights anywhere on his vehicle. I decided to continue driving and he drove in another direction.
After arriving at work, I called the police precinct on Park Road, who told me the next time that happens to call 911 and not to stop. I would have done that, but for some reason I had my cell phone in the back of the car that day. Lesson definitely learned!
I have heard about people flashing fake badges before, but having this happen on my way to work yesterday morning really woke me up! Usually I am a bit more aware of what is happening around me and can react accordingly. I am hoping you will post this to remind readers of the strange things that can and do happen every day, and that we will all remember to think quickly and safely if something does occur.”
Good lord that is scary. Good advice. If you’re not sure call 911 immediately!

Thanks to a reader for sending this alert from Washington Post:
“Authorities are no longer confident that they have a strong case against a 14-year-old boy accused in a drive-by shooting that killed four people in the District, and they might move to dismiss the charges against the youth, law enforcement and D.C. government sources said.”

This home is located at 38 Rhode Island Ave, NE:
The flier says:
“True luxury living at the home of well known designer! A gem of a house and a steal at this price! Features include electronic entry system, surround sound speakers in every room, high ceilings, gourmet kitchen, two luxurious bathrooms, two fireplaces, exposed brick, views of Capitol & Monument, recessed lighting. You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.
I normally don’t like to show houses already under contract but I decided to show this one because it was a reader request and it’s an area of DC that I don’t normally show. So firstly, what neighborhood is this exactly – Edgewood, Eckington? I think Redfin lists Brookland, which can’t be right…
Anyway, the house looks pretty amazing. Since it went under contract so quickly was $450,000 a ridiculously good deal?

“Dear PoP,
I wanted to pass along this unique opportunity for the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day today. We just confirmed that Sec. Duncan will discuss how education can play a role in developing a green economy for the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. Also, Sec. Salazar of Interior, Donovan of HUD, Sen. Cantwell and Congressman Blumenauer will also be present, in addition to a rally to save the whales since Obama is lifting the ban on commercial whaling today. The event is located directly off the Smithsonian Orange Line Metro exit on the National Mall.”

I have lamented the fact that Chinatown doesn’t seem to have a lot of Chinese restaurants but I’ve realized that I don’t know much about the ones east of 6th Street, NW. Full Kee is located at 509 H Street, NW. This one looks like it might be the real deal. Any fans?

I was fairly confident that the scuttlebutt about Fro-Yo coming to Columbia Heights Plaza was true. I’m happy to report that a reader followed up on the tip:
“Yay it is confirmed. While shopping down at H and M yesterday…I wandered into Fro-yo, and they said the Columbia Heights location (in old Rita’s spot) will be open in 2 weeks.”
As I’ve said before, I should be embarrassed to admit it but I freaking love frozen yogurt.
And in other good Columbia Heights Plaza news – Tonight at Wonderland, 5-8pm (11th and Kenyon) there is a fundraiser for the upcoming Community Marketplace and Farmers Market which kicks off June 5th.
