The Written Word Now Located at 1926 17th Street, NW

Someone just mentioned to me how difficult it is to find card shops today. While this is mostly invitations and stationary I hadn’t realized The Written Word moved to 1926 17th St, NW.  Previously Written Word was located in Dupont Circle then in Logan Circle at 1427 P St NW but that location closed May 1st.  I’m glad to see they’ve found a new location.

So besides The Written Word, where are other good card shops around town (especially for birthdays and events like that)?

Dear PoP – Construction finishing up at Washington Hilton

“Dear PoP,

I’ve been watching this construction project out of my office window for more than two years. The original plan was to build a condo building in the area that is now covered in grass but it was scrapped after, I’ve heard, the developers didn’t get financing. So now there’s a big elevated garden. I’m not sure what’s underneath it. It looks nice but there aren’t even any paths on it so you can only look at it.

Then there’s a lawn that is going to be used for outdoor tai chi and yoga classes associated with the health + swim club that opens June 1. I’m psyched about that since I’m a swimmer.”

Screenings of a never-seen-before Springsteen concert film at the Atlas June 12 and 17

Photo from flickr user Alex Hempton-Smith

I’m able to give away 2 pairs of tickets, I’ll select two winners from the comments. Share your favorite Bruce song and/or concert and I’ll announce the winners Friday.

From the organizers:

DC’S ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 1333 H ST. NE, HOSTS TWO SCREENINGS OF THE BOSS’S FIRST OUTRDOOR CONCERT FILM EVER!

Captured in London at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in June, 2009 in HD, this concert film captures Bruce Springsteen, the best live rock and roll performer of his generation (and a couple of other generations as well!).

“London Calling: Live In Hyde Park” conveys both the experience of being on-stage with Bruce Springsteen and the vast crowd experience of the festival environment. Viewers are able to see Springsteen spontaneously directing the E Street Band and shaping the show as it evolves.

The set list spans from “Born To Run” era to “Working On a Dream” and includes rare covers such as The Clash’s “London Calling,” which opened the show and wowed the crowd!

“The concert earned rave reviews. The London Times called it “epic” and “a revved-up… power drive through Springsteen’s America.” Concurs The Independent, “He awed the 50,000-strong crowd… Drenched in sweat by the second number, tossing his guitars to the roadies with the vigour of a frontman a third of his age and jogging down a walkway to meet his fans and take their requests, Springsteen’s intensity was staggering from first powerful vocal to final thrashed-out chord.”

Don’t miss these two chances to rock out with the Boss! Tickets are $15 and are available at www.atlasarts.org starting May 25!”

Dear PoP – Veterinarians?

“Dear PoP,

I’m in search of a quality vet with reasonable prices for routine check-ups and shots for my cat. So far all I’ve been able to gather from Yelp is that every vet within city limits will empty my wallet for no other benefit other than convenience. If you haven’t already indulged this subject, can you ask the masses where they bring their pets for routine checkups, preferably within sensible driving distance from Park View?”

I’ve heard great things about the Petworth Animal Hospital at 4012 Georgia Ave NW. I don’t have personal pet experience here but a friend of mine told me they are very reasonably priced and good with pets (though he did say they can be a bit abrupt in the customer service aspect). Though I’m not sure if they are used for regular check ups or just when there is a problem. There are mixed but mostly good reviews here.

Who do you guys recommend?

Traffic Safety Improvements at Intersection of New York Avenue and Florida Avenue, NE

From DDOT:

As previously announced, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is making major safety improvements at one of the busiest intersections in Northeast Washington, where New York Avenue, Florida Avenue, First Street and Eckington Place meet. Now, as the next phase of construction is about to begin, DDOT will be switching the traffic patterns at the intersection. The changes are scheduled to be implemented at 9 pm on Friday, June 4, 2010, weather permitting.

After the changes are made, traffic will flow in a circular pattern around the intersection (see diagram above). Drivers and cyclists will need to pay close attention to the posted signs and lane markings.

With the new traffic patterns:

* First Street will become one way southbound from Florida Avenue to New York Avenue.

* Florida Avenue will be limited to one way traffic westbound between New York Avenue and First Street.

* Eastbound Florida Avenue traffic will be detoured to First Street. From there, drivers can go left on New York Avenue to return to Florida Avenue, or they can use the following detour from southbound First Street: left on M Street, left on Third Street right on Florida Avenue.

* Northbound First Street traffic wishing to access westbound New York or Florida Avenues will be temporarily detoured via M and Third Streets, NE.

* Southbound Eckington Place traffic will no longer be allowed to turn left on Florida Avenue. Eckington traffic will use First Street to reach New York Avenue and eastbound Florida Avenue,

The $3 million reconfiguration of the intersection is designed to improve circulation and decrease accidents. The project is scheduled to be completed in August and final traffic pattern changes will be announced at that time.

Additional information about the project is available online at dashboard.ddot.dc.gov.

Dear PoP – surge in graffiti activity

“Dear PoP,

I have noticed a surge in graffiti activity in Columbia Heights over the past few weeks, but one takes a particularly long pause when it happens to your own property. Please see my crude photo documentation of the most recent tag “GA” along Girard between 11th and 14th. How annoying is this? Councilman Graham has been quick to respond. I think it’s fair to say it needs to be removed. How about preventing CH from turning into a late 1970′s NYC subway mural. CH has seen clear and present growth with respect to pride in ownership. The littering must stop, the graffiti must stop!”

Landmark U Street Building Goes on Auction Block

Thanks to a reader for sending this link from Alex Cooper Real Estate announcing:

“Two-story commercial building with approximately 12,070 square feet of gross building area. Land area is approximately 6,232 square feet and is zoned CR within the Arts District Overlay which allows mixed use development.”

The reader writes:

“The building that houses Station 9 – or used to, don’t know if its still open – is going to Auction on June 3rd.”

This is located at 1438 U Street, NW just east of 15th St, near the gas station. I’ve never actually been inside but from the outside it looks like an amazing building. I think a Tryst type diner would do great here. What do you think would work best here?

Keep in mind that those bidding in the auction will need at least $280,000 just for the deposit… With the deposit that high any guesses as to what price this will probably go for?
