The brand new Petworth Market was a great success this past Friday. It seems like this section of 9th St, NW (between Taylor and Upshur) was tailor made for a Market like this. In my opinion there are two elements to a great market: First, good fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread etc and second is the vibe. I’m happy to say the Petworth market succeeded on both counts. I think you can tell from the photos that this is the case. My only suggestion based on conversations with others would be, if possible, to change or extend the hours from 3 – 7 pm to 3/4 – 8pm (for those that work until 6pm). Thanks to the Petworth Community Market flickr group for the photos and thanks to all who were involved in making this such a great success.

I’d assume that this would be pretty good advice without or without camera surveillance… (It’s from the building on the 2600 block of Georgia Ave, NW where the sweet mural was painted over.

Anyone with information pls contact MPD on 202-727-9099 or you can provide information to the anonymous tip line on 1-888-919-CRIME or text to 50411. There are very little details that can be shared at this point. The victim was an adult male who is in critical condition.”

Last week I noted that Mayoral candidate and Council Chairman Vince Gray has some unusual locations for campaign banners. It turns out Mayor Fenty does also.

I never realized that this lion near 15th and Swann, NW was three dimensional.

As previously noted, I’ve been on a quest to document all the great banana plants around town. Thanks to a reader for sending in this great specimen. He writes:
“Here are our two, in our backyard 400 block of Irving St NW. The mother died in the snow storms but not before giving birth to our twins!”

I think I’ve shown this gate once before but the way the light was hitting the stained glass this weekend was awesome.

Back in January Big Chair Coffee opened up in Anacostia (2122 Marthin Luther King Jr Ave SE) to much fan fare. It turns out they’d also like to add some more options and are applying for a liquor license. The application says:
“New restaurant serving American food and coffee with Sidewalk Café. Occupancy load is 52″
Restaurant hours including a sidewalk cafe will be open until 2am.
I wonder if they’ll have an easier time than another coffee shop trying to get an alcohol license?

It looks like the cool old building at 1020 Girard St, NW finally sold for $418,500 on April 19, 2010. I can’t wait to see what they turn the space into. Looks like it was bought by a group called Capital City Real Estate. I wonder if they’ll keep the mural:

Or save the great old windows:

From an email:
“Visitors to the Smithsonian can now play a smart phone scavenger hunt that will take them on a “Trek” through nine Smithsonian museums, decoding clues along the way. The game can be played for free from any smart phone by downloading the “SCVNGR” application from the iPhone App Store or Android Market. The game runs through July 24. At the end of the game, two winners will receive an Apple iPad.
BUT… if you are in town tomorrow, Saturday, June 26, we are also hosting a one-day only contest. Meet at the Smithsonian Castle Commons at 9:30 am to register and at 2 pm, the first-place winner will receive an iPad!”

Ed. Note: Future owner requests must have a craigslist ad listing.
This rental is located at 4th and M St. SW:
The owner’s email says:
“Would you please consider including my beautiful, $2,000/month including utilities and an indoor parking space, huge (1150 sq. ft), two bedroom, 1-1/2 bath condo for rent in the beautiful SW waterfront area?
Half block to the Waterfront Metro stop (4th and M St. SW) and a brand new Safeway, two blocks to the waterfront marina and Channel walkway. Large outdoor swimming pool and beautifully landscaped grounds.
Available for occupancy July 1, 2010. Tel# 202-498-3170.”
Does $2,000 a month sound reasonable?

A reader had written in asking about rental options for $1000. Fortunately they found a place already. But it got me thinking – when I look for afternoon rental options I don’t see too many for $1000. So I’m curious what folks suggest – what are the best neighborhoods to find rentals for around $1000? Or if that is the limit do you think it is better to look for shared housing?
