icubaji found this home in Woodley Park. I thought I once featured it as a GDoN house porn post but I can’t seem to find it. Anyone remember what street this is on? At any rate, sweet house though, yeah?

We learned back in February that Pho was coming to 608 H St, NW in Chinatown. This is the spot that will be open late night (3am on weekends) and will have 65 seats.
Construction seems to be progressing nicely so hopefully doors will open soon. In the meantime if you find yourself on 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights I’m still getting lots of emails about Pho Viet (3513 14th Street, NW).

“Dear PoP,
I was wondering if you’d ever noticed the Washington News Company
building at 1121 Fifth Street, NW. I thought I saw a for sale/lease
sign for residential/commercial use on the building this morning, but
I can’t find anything about it online. It looks like it would be a
super cool loft-type place. I’d love to know if you can find out
more!”
The MRIS listing says:
“Fully sprinklered 21,237 sf 3 story building with 13 foot ceilings. 4,000+ sf office on 1st floor with 7,000+ unfinished loft apartments on 2nd floors. Lower level has 7,000 sf with ramp for parking or additional apartments. 1/2 block from New York Ave and New Safeway on 5th Street NW. 2 blocks to Metro 4 blocks to Chinatown, Verizon Center.”
You can see more photos here.
It’s yours for $4,950,000.

This rental is located at 1st and R St, NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“Totally renovated English Basement studio apartment with great kitchen, wall-to-wall carpeting, washer/dryer, gas fireplace, and lots of closet space. Round bay window and drywall ceiling with great recessed lighting makes the place bright and airy. Two-car off-street parking.
Bloomingdale is a great location for anyone who is working on the Hill or downtown. Half a block from Big Bear Cafe, walking distance to Windows Cafe, Yoga District, and Timor Bodega organic grocer. On Sundays there is a popular farmer’s market.”
Does $1175 sound reasonable for this studio english basement?

“Dear PoP,
When a landlord determines that there has been damage that needs repair, what is his or her responsibility to defend the expenditure of the security deposit? Must he or she provide documentation of the damage caused and the repair costs? What if any laws are in place to protect tenants from landlords who abuse their security deposit and to ensure the deposit is used only for legitimate repair purposes?”
Anyone ever dealt with landlords using your security deposit before?

Yesterday I wrote about a new gourmet empanada spot, Panas that soft opened in Dupont Circle at 2029 P St, NW. Just got an email saying you can sample the goods for free on Friday. They write:
“To mark the opening day owner Federico Garcia Lopez will offer one free empanada from 11 am until 1 pm.
Panas specializes in Latin fusion gourmet empanadas, the crescent-shaped turnovers, stuffed with a variety of well-seasoned meats, vegetables, spices, fruits, and sweets. Signature recipes are inspired by the Latin Fusion cuisine; a culinary concept that combines traditional and modern gastronomic techniques with different ingredients from across the Americas.
The 1,100 square-foot restaurant is tiny with just 13 seats and bright with a mustard colored wall highlighted with green field turf. Serving in-restaurant, carry-out and delivery the Panas menu includes $2 empanadas ranging from meat, pork, chicken and ham filled delicacies like the Chipotle Steak with shredded sirloin steak, onion and chipotle sauce to vegetarian selections like the Popeye with sautéed spinach, onions, raisins and goat cheese. Side salads with a Latin flair are also on the menu – the primavera with red pepper, corn, cilantro and black beans is a favorite as is the jicama salad with lettuce, mango and carrots.”

This home is located at 223 11th St, SE:
The flier says:
“A brilliant top to bottom, inside and out, restoration. Vacant for 30 years, now restored to it’s former glory. 3300 sq ft of magnificent open entertaining spaces, tons of natural light, marble counters, stainless steel appliances, rich wide plank wood floors, 2 car secure parking, all new wiring, plumbing, roof, HVAC, 4 blks to E Market, 2 to metro.”
You can find more info here and photos here.
The reader writes:
“This total reno was just listed in my neighborhood so I am curious to see what others think of the list price. The interesting thing about this property is that it and its sister property next door (220) were sold as total shells back in January of this year for $560,000 each.”
I think I like this one better than yesterday’s house porn post with a pool. Do you guys like the reno? Do you think this 4 bed/3.5 bath will go for $1,279,000?

From an email:
“ Warehouse Theater is holding its Second “Free-For-All” on Friday June 25th starting at 5pm. They are clearing out a lot of old restaurant equipment plus various odds and ends that have accumulated over the years. Most everything is free – save some of the bigger commercial kitchen items – and any money that they collect will be donated to the proposed Dupont Underground center for arts and architecture. More info here.”
Last time things went very quickly so if you’re interested I’d try to get there as close to 5pm as possible. Warehouse Theater can be reached through The Passenger bar at 1021 7th Street, NW by the Convention Center.

Ezme is located at 2016 P St, NW (in the old Pesce spot). When we learned that they were coming to this spot folks had pretty hopes. Remember these are the folks that also own Meze in Adams Morgan. So far I’ve been hearing good things. You can see their menus here. Anyone check them out yet?

Ojo Latino is a series by Néstor Sánchez Cordero. Nestor writes, “I just came from the Silverdocs festival in Silver Spring to see the screening of “South of the Border” of Oliver Stone, who is featured in this week’s OjO Latino. What’s your favorite Stone movie? Mine is “Salvador”.”
Anyone else hit Silverdocs?
Mine favorite Oliver Stone film is Born on the Fourth of July. What’s yours?

A few more shots after the jump. (more…)

Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg
May 2–September 16, 2010 at the NGA.
From the exhibition notes:
Myself seen by William Burroughs, Kodak Retina new-bought 2′d hand from Bowery hock-shop, our apartment roof Lower East Side between Avenues B & C, Tompkins Park trees under new antennae. Alan Ansen, Gregory Corso & Jack Kerouac visited, Jack’s The Subterraneans records much of the scene, Burroughs & I edited letter-manuscripts he’d sent from Mexico & South America, Alene Lee (“Mardou Fox” of The Subterraneans) typed final drafts. Neighborhood was heavily Polish & Ukranian, some artists, junkies, medical students, cheap restaurants like “Leshkos” corner 7th & A, rent was only ¼ of my monthly $120 wage as newspaper copyboy. Time of “The Green Automobile” poem to Cassady, Fall 1953.

So far we’ve learned that a Yoga Studio, Boundless Yoga, and a drycleaners, Georgetown Valet are coming to this popular corner. We also learned that Chix is not moving here.
But I think you’ll be pretty happy with the next likely tenant. I’m hearing that a frozen yogurt place is being recruited for the final space. While there is an ice cream spot on U St. between 13th and 14th, U Scream Ice Cream, I’m not aware of any frozen yogurt places nearby. Do you think frozen yogurt will work at this corner?

Saw this in front of the P Street Whole Foods: a newspaper box for the Grand Forks (North Dakota) Herald. I wonder why…”
