Yikes, this is right near El Limeno, The Hitching Post and the Old Soldiers Home entrance.
From MPD:
“On July 31, shortly before 1:00 am, Fourth District units responded to the 200 block of Upshur Street, NW, for the report of a shooting. Four victims were located suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local area hospital to be treated for what appear to be non life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call 1-888-919-CRIM[E].”

I’d never heard of Zenobia Lounge (careful loud music plays on Web site) before but went to check it out when I heard they were applying for a liquor license. They are located at 1025 31st, NW. You can see their menu here. There was a nice Middle East vibe going on and the liquor application also says that they have a hookah bar. Adding an alcohol option seems like a natural progression here. Any fans?
Here’s what it looks like on the inside looking at the gift shop towards the dining area:

And here’s the back hookah area:

We actually judged the back of this rowhouse after a reader sent in a photo back in April. I recently got an email from the owners who share some info:
“Our building – that we recently renovated (to 95% or so complete) – is very near there and I’ve attached a photo of the rear of the building – which is through the alley (off 4th street). The metal pipe structure is scheduled to have hops growing on them sometime soon.”
Turns out they are architectural firm – Wiebenson & Dorman Architects PC and you can see a bit of the inside here.

Tucker
“Meet our boy Tucker! You can’t see it in the picture but he has a white-tipped tale like a fox and when he’s all curled up he looks like the Firefox logo.”

Munchkin
“Munchkin – Loves his urban garden!”

Dexter
“This is Dexter, a recent addition the neighborhood and a rescue puppy. He overcomes a birth defect by hopping along on 3 legs. Here he’s just chilling after another day hiking and chasing birds in Dolly Sods.”
Lots more great entries after the jump. (more…)

This rental is located at 2001 12th St NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“I’m looking for a new roommate for my fantastic two bedroom/two bathroom apartment on 12th and U, across the street from the U street metro (yellow/green lines), close to the best restaurants and bars in NW DC, a 15 minute walk to Dupont Circle, and a 10 minute walk to Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights. The bedroom is a good size, with 2 big closets, hardwood floors, and a private bathroom. The apartment has a BALCONY, W/D, dishwasher, fireplace, new appliances, central air, and is painted funky colors. The building is 10 years old, has a rooftop deck, doorman, gym, and garage parking. Rent is about $1200/month.”
Think $1200 sounds reasonable?

“Dear PoP,
I was a bit miffed to see the city thought it was necessary to block off an entire sidewalk in order to put up a road sign. I saw one elderly lady walk out onto the curb around the lamppost to get by. This is on Randolph Street, westbound from Georgia Avenue, in what I consider primarily a walking neighborhood. There is some irony that the sign is for “no thru traffic” directed at motorists and actually creates the exact same problem for pedestrians. I think they should have at least put another sign on the corner of the intersection warning pedestrians that the sidewalk is closed to pedestrian traffic.”

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up about – Tomatillo Taqueria. He writes, “serving out of the Big Hunt at 1345 Connecticut Ave, NW I just noticed it! It’s cash only.”
Back in January we took a quick look and folks seemed to dig it. If you work in the area, definitely seems like a good lunch option.

This home is located at 1632 New Jersey Ave, NW:
The flier says:
“Fabulous 3 Lvl Rowhouse in Sought After Shaw. Min from Downtown DC. Walk to U street restaurants and bars. Great hdwd flrs on first level. Gourmet kit w/ granite and Top of the Line appls. 4 blocks to Metro. Use 3rd Bedroom on Lower Level as In-Law Suite w/ sep Kit and Bath. Recess Lights, Fireplace. Not a Shortsale!”
You can find more info here and photos here.
It’s funny I usually consider a rowhouse 3 levels when the 3 levels are above ground. Anyway, what do you think of the renovation? Does $499,000 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/2.5 bath?
In other potential Shaw GDoN news there’s a pretty sweet shell (no photos) going for $399,000 at 1513 8th St, NW.

The market takes place from 3-7pm every Friday and is located on 9th St, NW between Georgia Ave and Upshur.
From an Email:
“As a special treat to help folks cool down, we are also welcoming the Sweetflow Mobile from 5 PM to 7 PM. The Sweetflow Mobile is an environmentally-conscious frozen yogurt truck from Sweetgreen. It is uniquely engineered to run without a generator, thus significantly reducing the amount of fuel consumed. Just like their stores, Sweetflow Mobile uses 100% compostable packaging and local/organic ingredients & toppings.”
Email continues with full list of participants and a recipe after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,
On July 25th you were kind enough to alert readers to a missing dog in Columbia Heights. I had seen the signs around my block and was delighted to read an update on your blog that the dog and owner had successfully been reunited. As a dog owner, I can barely imagine how upsetting it must be to have your dog go missing. That being said-I naturally assumed that the owner of this dog, overcome with the exuberance of being reunited with their beloved best friend, would take the time to walk back through the neighborhood and remove the signs that are plastered on every street corner. I feel that it is disrespectful to enlist the help of the community and then to spit in its face once you have achieved your objective.
I’d like to kindly suggest that the owner take their dog on a well deserved victory lap around Columbia Heights and remove all evidence of the traumatic event.”

The 2009 listing for this property does not indicate that this was a bank owned property. It’s possible that it had been a long time owner or part of an estate. Perhaps they were ambivalent about selling, as it took some time to get down to a realistic list price. The original Good Deal or Not (GDoN) post did not have any available pictures of the house, but see the link for the listing under BEFORE to see the starting place for the current renovation.
Second sale follows after the jump. (more…)

Over the past month or so there have been many reports about proper construction starting back up at some landmark locations around the city (many have been horse’s ass award nominees). So my question for this Friday is simple – assuming that construction and groundbreakings really do take place relatively soon – which project do you think will have the biggest positive impact on the surrounding community/neighborhood?
I’m thinking about:
Howard Theater
O St. Market
14th and W St, NW YMCA
McMillian Reservoir
Walter Reed Medical Center
If I left out a big project that you think will have a big impact on the surrounding community/neighborhood, please leave the name in the comments.
