DC-Inspired Recipes: Cool Cantaloupe-Mint Granitas for Hot Weather by Laura

DC-Inspired Recipes are by Laura from Lauralicious in DC

100-degree temps aren’t playin’ around in DC these days. Humid summer days are the perfect time to enjoy a cool dessert such as Cantaloupe and Mint Granitas. This time of year, you can get the cheap melons at farmers’ markets. It’s easy to make granitas with fresh melon. There’s minimal cooking and prep time, and most of the work is done in the freezer. That means more time cooling off at the pool instead :)

Cantaloupe-Mint Granitas:

Ingredients:

1 cantaloupe

2 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp water

1/4 cup sugar

Handful of chopped fresh mint

1. Purée the cantaloupe until smooth. Pour into a long, flat plastic Tupperware dish so that the puree is no more than about 1 to 1.5″ thick.

2. In a small saucepan, combine the lemon juice, water, and sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Add to the cantaloupe and mix well. Mix in the chopped mint.

3. When frozen, scrape with a fork and add to a glass or serving bowl.

What are some of your other favorite cool desserts to make in the hot DC summer?

nice. although my version will necessarily include rum. and maybe some triple sec. i wonder if its better to mix before or after freezing. probably after, no?

This looked great – refreshing – so I just made some and it’s chilling in the freezer now :)

Beverage of choice for triple digit days = rosemary lemonade or sassafras iced tea (alcohol of your choice optional).

  • Yes – granitas are great! Freeze just about anything sweet and juicy in a shallow pan and scrape it up with a fork. Up to 1/4 of alcohol will not queer the mix for freezing.

Here’s my favorite – but as always – exactness is not important. You want some sweet, some fruit, some spice – play with your food!

Steep 4 bags of Celestial Seasonings Lemon Zinger tea in 2 cups of water with a few juniper berries (found in the spice isle – pricey, but a cool spice to play with in other things)about 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated ginger root, (you can keep a knob of ginger it in a baggie in the freezer for a long time) 1/4 cup (more or less) sugar, 1/4 cup sherry or sweet vermouth, (or not) some mint if you have it. Some smashed up berries or watermelon, lemon zest (the yellow part, cut off with a vegetable peeler) is also good.

Granitas are great, especially in the Summer.

Substitute the Cantaloupe with some salt, Green Melon and some Midori Liqueur and you have some Melon Mint Granitas !
