Rogue States Burger Joint Being Sued for Burger Fumes

Holy cow, this is a wild update about Rogue States located at 1300 Connecticut Ave, NW. Thanks to a reader for sending this link from the ABA Journal:

“Yesterday [July 22] the law firm asked a Washington, D.C., judge to issue an injunction to stop Rogue States, a Burger Grilling Company, to put an end to the emissions, according to The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times. Judge John McAdams Mott gave the parties until Aug. 10 to resolve the case, but said he was inclined to grant injunctive relief if no agreement is reached.”

The Blog of the Legal Times says:

“In the firm’s complaint, which was filed on March 10 by Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman partner Deborah Baum, Steptoe contends that the exhaust system at Rogue States’ 1300 Connecticut Ave. N.W. location, which is near the firm’s 1330 Connecticut Ave. N.W. office, dumps smoke and fumes from the restaurant into the firm’s air-intake system. As a result, the complaint says, “Steptoe employees have reported health-related effects in connection with the smoke and food odors, including but not limited to headaches, nausea, dizziness, watery and itchy eyes, drowsiness and distraction.”

“Ice Cream Club” Coming to DC

From an email:

We’re starting an ice cream club. A what? Consider this: In the hottest summer ever, an unemployed chef has been sitting at home with an industrial-sized ice cream maker at his fingertips. What do you think he’s been up to?

Our “club” will work like a CSA, or community-support agriculture—a produce-buying scheme where members pay a farmer at the beginning of the season and receive a load of fruits and veggies every week.

Here’s what we’ve got to offer: Every week of our club includes six 4-ounce portions of ice cream and sorbet—that’s equivalent to 1½ pints of Ben & Jerry’s—that was churned no more than 48 hours before you get to eat it. We’re trying out the club for the steamy month of August, and “membership” options include one, two, three, or four weeks.

I’ll be curious to know what you guys think of the prices.

Details after the jump. (more…)

New French Tavern and Lounge including Cabaret Coming to Downtown

Sax Restaurant & Lounge will be located at 730 11 Street, NW in the old POSH Lounge space. It’s alcohol application says:

“New tavern and lounge to serve petit, modern French cuisine and include cabaret type
live performances by uniquely talented artists, from classical ballet to Latin or Adagio.

Sounds interesting, yeah? I actually wasn’t familiar with Posh – were there any fans?

Sunday Storm Devastates Trees – Many Homes Without Power

Thanks to all the readers who sent in photos of the devastation. It painful to see all these beautiful trees knocked down. It makes me appreciate the programs supported by Casey Trees that much more.

Meridian Pint to Offer Brunch Next Sunday

On Sunday morning I tweeted the following information that I heard from the folks at Meridian Pint (11th and Park Rd, NW):

“Meridian Pint serving brunch today (Sunday) from 12 noon til 2pm. Next week full service brunch on Sunday, Aug. 1st beginning at 10am”.

While a full brunch starts at 10am next Sunday (and goes until 3pm I believe) I also hear that in the following weeks brunch will also be extended to Sat. I’ll announce that extension when it goes live. Anyone happen to try the practice brunch on Sunday?

CVS at Georgia and New Hampshire Ave, NW Opens

It had that great new car smell and looks awesome. My first purchase? A bottle of water. If you come to the next PoP happy hour the second Thurs. in August (details soon) remind me to tell you stories of my walkabouts in the 100 degree weather. Good times, good times.

But back to the CVS, for real, the inside looks great. And the woman who came in behind me, went straight to the folks working behind the counter and said, “thank you so much for opening in our neighborhood”.

Garden of the Day

I like how the rocks are spilling down like a river. Also note that they change from white to gray.  And finally I’ve become a big fan of moss in gardens this season.  I’ve seen lots of good uses.  This one’s from Columbia Heights.

(Mini) House(s) of the Day

Here’s an interesting sorta carriage house style house in Georgetown. And nearby is one of the smaller homes I’ve ever seen that I think I may have shown over the years:

Dear PoP – Adams Morgan Power Outage?

“Dear PoP,

I can’t find anything on this, but there was some sort of large power outage on and around 18th Street last night. Seems the bars south of Kalorama had firemen come to evacuate them. Had you heard anything? At the time we were told there was a fire at the transformer.”

I didn’t see anything at Pepco or from DCfireems. Anyone from Adams Morgan know what happened?

Not a Good Start to the Weekend

“Dear PoP,

Was walking around chinatown and saw this on 9th and H, NW.

I think I saw an ambulance leave the scene a little before 11pm [Friday night] but pretty hard to tell what made the car flip.

Traffic I kinda a mess.”
