There was a lot of discussion about these rallies. Anyone check either out? Here are some photos:

Good Deal or Not? “rooftop deck with sweeping city & Capitol dome views” edition

This home is located at 1206 T St, NW:

The flier says:

“Wonderful historic home in vibrant Logan/U St Corridor, steps to everything * Walk Score 98 * Fabulous renovated granite/SS kitchen with breakfast room, separate DR, formal LR, 5BR 2.5BA up, lower level in-law suite, MBR private balcony, rooftop deck with sweeping city & Capitol dome views, garage & driveway space, CAC, gorgeous original details (mantels, stained glass, bay windows) – a must see!”

You can find more info here and photos here.

I know this is technically house porn (over $1 million) but I couldn’t resist starting off the week with this one. That roof deck brought a tear to my eye. Think this 5 bed/3.5 will go for $1,099,000?

Everlasting Life on Georgia Ave gets a Major Renovation

Back in Feb. ’09 we learned that Everlasting Life, located at 2928 Georgia Ave, NW, had temporarily closed for renovations. While renovations took a little longer than expected a reader sends in word and a few shots of the renovated space looking good:

“They still have a vegan deli, they added a stage, tables, and a bar. They are working on a liquor license.”

Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo from PoPville flickr user esessler

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

I’ll start with a rave, I had to call the fire department because my carbon monoxide detector went off and the response was phenomenal. It turned out to be a false alarm but DCFD arrived lightning fast and were super professional and courteous. Many thanks.

Vento Restaurant to Replace Stars in Dupont

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up. Stars bistro was located at 2120 P St, NW. We judged it back in June ’09.

It seems like new Italian restaurants are nearly as big as food trucks. Anyone ever hear of Vento before? A google search shows that there was a Vento in New York’s meat packing district but it closed it not too long ago. Not sure if there is any relation but stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

Design Within Reach Closes Shop in Adams Morgan

And the closings continue on Columbia Road. Thanks to all for sending word that Design Within Reach, located at 1838 Columbia Road, NW in Adams Morgan has been completely emptied out. A reader took the above photo from Friday and when I walked by on Sat. the store was completely empty. Another reader writes:

“DWR in Adams Morgan is gone. There’s absolutely nothing inside the store at all. Though I didn’t see any closing signage, it’s fairly apparent that the store is gone. Can’t say I miss it. Their prices were pretty outlandish and their stock was abysmal. I remember going in there needing a little small table for two people and the cheapest one was over $800. Blegh.”

We talked about the shop back in June ’08. Will they be missed?

West End Cinema Coming to 2301 M St, NW

I tweeted about this on Friday (you can follow me on twitter @PoPville here) because I was so psyched but it deserves proper Monday morning discussion. The description from the alcohol application says:

“NATURE OF OPERATION
Movie Theater with concession stands serving food & beverage service.

HOURS OF OPERATION AND SALE/SERVICE & CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES FOR INSIDE PREMISE
Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 12 am and Friday & Saturday 10 am – 2 am”

So movies and food and beer. Sounds awesome! I wonder if it’ll be like the Arlington Cinema and Draft House? Though after the alcohol license came out the owner sought to reassure his neighbors:

Note that even though the address is 2301 M St, NW the location is actually on the 23rd St, NW side on the lower level. We’ve spent a lot of time pining for a new movie theater, it’s nice to finally share news of a new one. And it’ll serve alcohol!

Update on Incident Involving a Falling Death from the Building Above Petworth Metro

Photo from PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

There were a number of conflicting comments and reports in the comments of this weekend’s post about this incident. First and foremost the Washington Post/AP story claiming that MPD was investigating a stabbing of Mr. Eric Wright is completely inaccurate (there was a stabbing in SE that MPD was investigating). Secondly, the Washington Post/AP story claimed the incident took place in NE which is not the case. The Washington Post has since removed the incorrect article. Lastly, I have confirmed with MPD that the incident definitely involves a fall from the roof and the investigation is on going. 4D Commander Missouri says, “Preliminary reports from the Homicide Branch indicate no signs of foul play.”

The Salt Lake Tribune has released more information about the victim and the incident:

” Wright was working as an intern with the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics, said his mother, D. Wright. She asked that questions be directed to Kirk Jowers, director of the institute.

Wright had gone up to the roof of the seven-story Park Place Apartments and apparently slipped and fell, Jowers said. The roof is an open area set up as a public gathering space and Wright was alone when he fell, Jowers said.”

As another reader mentioned Mr. Wright’s friends and family are reading these posts so please be sensitive in your comments. My condolences go to the friends and family.

Columbia Heights Day Hits another Home Run

I feel like a broken record but again Columbia Heights Day (this year with the addition of the DC State Fair) was a huge success. And as I say every year the photos do far more justice than words. Sadly, I missed the cupcake eating contest this year so if anyone got some of those shots please upload a few of them to the PoPville flickr pool. Congrats and thanks to the organizers for putting together such a fun day.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

Somebody Falls Off Roof of Park Place Apartments above Petworth Metro

Got a terrible email last night around 2:30am saying, “somebody fell off the roof of the Park Place building into the alley. Dead on the spot. Cops showed up within a minute or so. Have no idea what happened.”

I have confirmed the incident with building management. At the moment it is not clear if this was intentional or an accident. MPD writes:

“the 4th District received a radio run for an unconscious male in the rear of 850 Quincy St – upon arrival they found an adult male deceased… at this time our Violent Crimes Branch is investigating the cause of death (undetermined at this time) and further release of information is forthcoming.”

UPDATE MPD Press Release at 5:15pm

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating an undetermined death which occurred in the 3700 block of Georgia Avenue, NW.

On Saturday, August 28, 2010, shortly before 2:00 am, Officers from the Fourth District responded to the rear alley of the 3700 block of Georgia Avenue, NW, where they found a man, later identified as 22 year-old Eric Right of Salt Lake City, Utah, lying on the ground unresponsive. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and found no signs consistent with life and Mr. Right was subsequently pronounced dead.

The decedent’s remains were transported to the DC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy and at this time the cause of death is undetermined.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099 or

1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746). The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons wanted for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
