This rental is located at 1631 S Street NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“This magnificent building offers studios, one and two bedroom apartments with antique heart pine floors and boutique sunlit kitchens.
* On-line rent payment
* On-line maintenance requests
* On-site storage facilities
* Modern laundry facilities
* Discounted high-speed wired and wireless internet access
* 24 Hour controlled access and video monitoring”
I’m thinking this is gonna go pretty fast because the ad says this studio is going for $900 this week only. Am I crazy or does that seem pretty cheap?

Earlier this morning we spoke about the Results Gym that was closing Sept. 1 in the City Vista building in Mt. Vernon Square. Just wanted to share the early word from a well placed source that it is looking like Vida Fitness will be taking over the space.
This is still technically scuttlebutt but I give it a very high probability of coming through.

“Dear PoP,
I was working from the table in the window by the door at Tynan’s Cafe at the CH metro Thursday around 7pm. I stood up and turned my back on my computer while talking to a friend who had arrived to say hello, still within close proximity of the computer. A teenager (who had apparently been casing the place with his friends earlier) stepped inside, made eye contact with my friend and smiled, grabbed the computer, and sprinted off into the metro. He disappeared. No one stopped him, despite being a running young kid carrying a computer with my friend yelling after him.
Please let people know to avoid sitting by the door in cafes with their computers.”
Sorry to hear this. Definitely keep a close eye on your computers when at a cafe.

Neil Michael Godleski
For those who inquired about a vigil for the student murdered at Sherman Circle this past Sat. night, following are the details:
Dear Petworth Neighbors:
Join us for a prayer vigil and moment of Silence for Neil Michael Godleski, a resident of the Petworth Neighborhood.
Day and Time: Wednesday Night August 25th at 8:30 PM
Place: Kansas Avenue, NW and Sherman Circle, NW.
Riding his bike home from a restaurant where he was working to pay his own way through college, Neil Michael Godleski, 31, was shot and killed shortly after 12:30am on Sunday morning near Sherman Circle NW. It appears he encountered someone that attempted to rob him.
Neil, was a student at Catholic University of America and worked at a restaurant in the Southwest waterfront. He loved languages and learned Portuguese and Polish and became a rafting guide in Maine and Massachusetts.
Join us at the scene as neighbors come together in unison to remember him and to pray for safer streets. Law abiding citizens should not have to fear for their own safety when in route to work, church or while coming from the grocery store.
We will join together in hopes of lifting our neighborhood to higher levels of peace and a better understanding of living and being compatible with one another.
Candles will be provided.

Wednesday Night August 25th at 8:30 PM
Kansas Avenue, NW and Sherman Circle, NW.
On a side note: Council Member Bowser just released a note about getting lights in Sherman Circle:
““Residents of Petworth have long complained that NPS grounds within Sherman Circle are potentially dangerous after dark because of the lack of lighting,” said Bowser. “All around the Circle are street lights but within the park grounds there are none. Lighting needs to be installed with great urgency.”
Today at 3 P.M., Bowser will meet at Sherman Circle with Delegate Holmes Norton, the District Department of Transportation, and officials from the Metropolitan Police Department. She has also advised the electric company to be ready to energize the Circle as soon as the federal government decides what to do.”
Full press release after the jump. (more…)

This home is located at 1646 Park Road, NW:
The flier says:
“Owned by the Missionaries of Charity and very well cared for. House has been made very sparse and utilitarian but underneath is tons of character and charm. Large rooms filled with lots of light. Has 2 parking spaces in back with electric gate. Walking distance to Metro & Columbia Heights shopping corridor. On Sentri-lock, vacant, go anytime. Sold As-Is.”
You can find more info here and photos here.
Thanks to a reader for sending this one in. Back in July a reader had noticed that the shrine had been removed out front. Now we know why. Does $649,000 sound reasonable for this 4 bed/2.5 bath house?

Anyone interested in a job can apply in the following ways:
“They can email their resume to nabil65@msn.com , they may stop by the store to pick up an application or they may visit www.Subway.com and apply.”
The store is located right next to Sala Thai on Georgia Ave, NW above the metro. I’ll be sure to updated when a specific day is selected for their grand opening.

Ceiba is located at 701 14th St, NW. I was able to try this place out for a restaurant week lunch and thought it was really good. (I had the steak.) I’ve heard others say that it was way overrated. What do you guys think – fair, good, great or completely overrated? You can see their dinner menu here.

“Dear PoP,
Here’s something amusing. The DC Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization last week initiated a project at Bancroft Elementary, in Mount Pleasant, for expanded and improved playgrounds. There’s been some controversy about that, mainly because the neighborhood found out about this project only when the heavy equipment showed up, on August 3, and reduced the existing playground to rubble, including the gardens visited by Michelle Obama last spring, and the little-kids playground paid for and installed by the neighborhood just seven years ago. It would have been nice if the DC Government had let the neighborhood in on its plans for the neighborhood elementary school.
Um, about the sign — curious that they don’t know how to spell Councilmember Graham’s name. And the tape? That’s been put there to cover over a tart comment about the project hand-written on the sign by some disgruntled neighbor.”

Normally we’re used to hearing exciting news or at least exciting scuttlebutt when talking about City Vista in Mt. Vernon Square. This is the first time I can remember big news of a closing. Many readers are bummed and last night sent emails like the following:
“Dear PoP,
I’m a relatively new MVT condo owner (bought in 2009) and was devastated to hear from an excellent source with firsthand knowledge that the Results in City Vista will close abruptly on September 1st. This is terrible stuff, especially for the staff that will lose their jobs.
I’m writing to break the news in the hope that it will spread and cause such an uproar that it will make the Results brass reconsider…”
Another reader sent in definitive word from one of the trainers so I’m afraid an enormous uproar won’t be able to make Results reconsider at this point. But perhaps another gym can/will move into the space?

“Dear PoP,
I’d love to get your readers’ thoughts on a business my family is trying to open. It’s a French coffee shop and bakery, with authentic French pastries and several varieties of bread– including real baguettes!– baked on site. We’re thinking wi-fi, comfy chairs and good coffee. It’s the sort of Mom and Pop operation where the proprietors will get to know their regulars, and take special orders, and keep little treats on hand for your kids.
We’ve found what seems to be an ideal spot, in DC USA. However, the main office of the development company has been blowing us off for months. The good folks of the Development Corporation of Columbia Heights are excited about our proposal, but have also expressed frustration with the passive resistance of the head office. It’s true, we don’t come with the backing of a nationwide chain. This is, however, a local, woman-owned business, exactly the sort of thing that the developers claimed they would be seeking out. We’ve just about given up on this property, but Jim Graham’s office has indicated some willingness to facilitate between us and the landlord; it’s too early to know if anything will come of that.
So if you think this sounds like the sort of place you might patronize, let’s hear it! Maybe some support from the community, along with our solid business plan, long small-business experience, and singleminded determination, will encourage the landlord to talk to us. We’d also love to hear suggestions for elements that would make you love a bakery/coffee shop even more.”
This sounds amazing. I’d definitely support it! I’m really frustrated reading about your experience. I can’t believe some people would rather have these store fronts sit empty than have a promising business like this. Would you guys like to see a bakery like this go into the DC USA? If so, show your support and let’s help them make it happen.

Thanks to a reader for sending in the photo. The Post reported:
“An off-duty District police officer working a security detail inside a Northeast D.C. Home Depot was shot Monday, according to police and a store manager
The officer was shot in the arm, according to a manager who declined to give his name when reached by telephone at the 901 Rhode Island Ave NE store.
The manager said a suspect was in custody.”

As Chidogo comes closer to opening at 1936 14th Street, NW the old Seafood & Crab sign has come down. Let’s take a moment to reflect.

The painting looks good. Sadly they covered up the mural that was on the side. And I can’t even find the photo I took of it…
We judged El Paraiso here.

This one from 16th St, NW has a ton going on. Every nook is filled with plants or flowers. Super cool.
