“Dear PoP,
Saw this sign on the window of the former Lawson’s, just behind the Krispy Kreme in Dupont Circle. Can it be true?”
It’s true! The old Lawsons is becoming a Panera, right outside the Dupont South Metro stop.

They have tostadas and sometimes chicken mole.
totally why I never update anything ever in life.
The next "Reader Nominated Horse's Ass Award" goes to...
$7 for a cup of froyo? JesusChrist - how much froyo and extras are you loading up in one...
"...you can feast on what Mendelsohn says are the best tacos he’s had."
I do hope...
uh..yippiee? this place is sucky just like every au bon pain, cosi, etc.
Ooo. I like Au Bon Pain. Not as much Pret a Manger, but definitely more than Cosi — which just never works right for me. I do miss XandO.
panera is owned by au bon pain.
I am not ashamed to say that I will make the journey down to Dupont at least once a week to go to this Panera. Don’t judge, please. I know how harsh some of you can be…
I am 100% with you! Panera Bread reminds me of the Midwest, and trust me, you can’t find decent cream of chicken and wild rice soup anywhere else in the city.
is being reminded of the midwest a good thing or not?
For food, I would think so. When I went to Chicago a few summers ago I was continually impressed by not only the quantity (good LORD) but quality of the food. We ate quite nicely, the only problem being that there wasn’t a good bagel to be found.
and you find good bagels in washington? i know bagels and baguettes in cap hill is great, but where else?
I agree with you on both counts. I’m happy about Panera coming — I was never a fan of Lawson’s — and commenters on this site can be such jerks.
(Waiting for a mean comment to prove me right …)
Boo! From what I understand, the property owner decided they wanted to rent to Panera instead of Lawsons. Panera! You killed one of my lunch spots!
There’s a new Lawson’s opening up in the Post building at 15th and L. It’s in a cursed spot that has been occupied by about 10 different places over the past few years, so I’m not optimistic. Right next to the Radio Shack.
I’d rather see a mosque.
hilarious. almost spit out my drink. post of the day.
Islamic Community Center, hater.
This is certainly an improvement
Seriously, this is old news. I remember hearing that the day I heard that Lawson’s was closing.
Awesome news. Panera’s sandwiches come in really handy when I run out of scouring pads. They’re nice, but not nearly as abrasive as Quiznos.
Huh.
Funny. True that!
Panera = disgusting chain.
Panera used to be good but they’ve gone way downhill in recent years.
