New Restaurant – Mintwood Place – Coming to Adams Morgan

I’ve been curious to learn what will become of the space, that most recently was a bodega and sold frozen yogurt, at 1813 Columbia Rd, NW. It closed almost exactly a year ago in Oct. ’09. A recent alcohol application permit recently went up saying:

“Restaurant with recorded music and entertainment limited to DJ with no dancing. Seating capacity is 113. Total Occupancy load is 124. Sidewalk Café with seating for 24.”

I’ll be sure to update when more info becomes available about the restaurant.

DC Loft Gallery Opens at 1926 14th St, NW

Just noticed that the U Street area got a new gallery. According to their Web site:

This new gallery located near the intersection with U Street will present a broad range of Contemporary art, with a theme-oriented exhibition program focused on sociologically as well as aesthetically relevant topics, emphasizing a concept-based rather than a monographic approach. Within the framework of a Washington/Baltimore metropolitan scene that has morphed within the past five years or so to include a wide variety of art-related phenomena, this commercial undertaking seeks to find a middle ground, incorporating aspects of both ends of that artistic spectrum.

Since this citys all-inclusive cultural setting now ranges from alternative spaces, temporary venues, public artworks, and events to the more traditional commercial galleries, independent curators and consultants, and increasingly independent curators and consultants, and increasingly contemporarily-oriented museums as well as university-associated exhibition spaces, DC Loft Gallery would like to combine aspects of this variegated artworld fabric into a synthesis potentially appealing to a diverse audience.

Such an effort seems particularly appropriate within the context of a neighborhood itself in transition, incorporating diverse ethnic cultures as well as innovative commercial and residential areas into a neighborhood that is in the process of defining itself. Perhaps it can be suggested this constitutes a kind of suggestion for what urban areas might be projected to become in the near future, and we see ourselves as intimately involved in that ongoing self-conception.

You can see some photos of the gallery here.

Bistro 18 Coming to Adams Morgan

I’ve been getting a number of emails from readers about the sign that has gone up at the old Oya’s Mini Bazaar and African Art space located at 2420 18th St NW. This is the space that I learned will become:

‘a “Tryst” type spot (coffee house, sandwiches, etc…) with low sofas and lots of gathering space. The new owners have already purchased a liquor license. There wasn’t a kitchen previously so they will have to build out a whole new kitchen and remodel the inside so it is likely going to take a number of months before they open up.’

Thanks to all who sent emails.

Judging Buildings – 1300 Block of H St, NE

I’ve been dying to know what’s going into this building on H St, NE (next to the Atlas Theater) but sadly haven’t seen anything yet. So in the meantime, lets judge the building. I’ve been watching this building for months and months and this is a complete rehab. It’s def. a unique building for the street. It has some interesting details:

But what do you think overall – thumbs up or down?

Your Afternoon Animal Fix

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.  I’m aware not everyone loves pets.  But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure.  It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

Duke sure love the news…from Capitol Hill
