If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best. I’m aware not everyone loves pets. But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure. It’s cool, hold tight, an architecture post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

“Dear PoP,
Can I ask you a favor and ask the people if they have any good recommendations for window replacement companies/contractors.
I am looking to replace existing vinyl window in my house and want just the basic white frame that are high efficiency.”
I’ve heard window replacement can be very expensive. If anyone has recommendations can you also say approximately how much you paid?
Ed. Note: For all who’ve sent in questions, I haven’t forgotten you, I’m just going through a queue. My goal is to get to as many questions as possible. Stay tuned for yours!

I thought this shot from caroline.angelo was awesome. She asks and answers two awesome questions:
“Two questions that were rolling around in my head:
1. If you pour pumpkin pie filling into an ice cream maker, will you get pumpkin ice cream?
and,
2. If you mix candied walnuts into said ice cream, will it be the most delicious ice cream ever?
The answer to both is a resounding YES!”
So my two follow up questions are – how expensive is an ice cream maker? And can I operate one with nearly zero culinary skills?

I’ll admit that I haven’t been following the controversy over 2910 Garfield St. NW too closely. Basically one house was demolished, some “100-year-old oak and red cedar trees” were cut down and the developer plans on building two “5,000-square-foot homes on the site”. I’m saddened by the fact that the old trees were cut down but when I was walking by I couldn’t help but notice what seemed to be a bit of a double standard. Across their street there are a number of rowhouses with signs that say “No Subdivision, No McMansions”. I’m not saying these homes are McMansions but I imagine they are on a plot that was most definitely subdivided. See photo below:

Cactus Cantina is located at 3300 Wisconsin Ave. NW and much like Lauriol Plaza in Adams Morgan, it is always crowded when I walk by it. You can see their menu here. Any must order items?

This ‘Virginia Square Metro Incident’ security footage obtained by ARLnow is absolutely amazing. It shows Dimas Pinzon jumping across the tracks to save a man who slipped back in August. (H/t DCist)

A couple of weeks ago we discussed what questions should be asked of Chief Lanier and other MPD leaders at a crime meeting. Ed. Note: Many police officers and firefighters read PoP and from time to time contact me directly. This one was kind enough to give his/her opinion from the ground level. The following is her/his opinion alone and does not represent an official response from MPD.
It is a bit lengthy but I think well worth the read:
“How come in my over 13 years in DC I’ve only seen cops on foot a handful of times? Simply, why don’t we see regular patrols on foot?
* It depends on the district and the PSA Lieuntenant. Some districts or PSAs aren’t conducive to having a footbeat officer. Foot or bike beats are more logical for business areas than residential ones, which is why you don’t see them in heavy residential neighborhoods.
* The advent of statistics-driven policing has put a lot of pressure on supervisors. One of the metrics that officials look at come from the Office of Unified Communications (OUC). They look at things like the number of calls for service, response time, etc. A lot more calls get answered in a shorter amount of time when Officers are in vehicles. When you take a fixed pool of manpower and reassign some to fixed, limited-geography beats, the response time for everything is going to drop into the toilet unless you augment the foot officers with additional officers in vehicles.
* Given a choice between walking and pushing a scout car, most officers won’t willingly volunteer for a foot or mountain bike beat. Assigned foot beats are usually pretty small and get repetitive fast. Walking or biking eight and half hours a day can take a toll on your body.
Continues after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,
My wife and I have “adopted” an underprivileged local boy for the holidays through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. We would very much like to make his wishes come true, but we’re stumped on what to get him. He only asked for 3 things, two of which are small and easy to get. However, for his third item, he listed just “skates.”
We’ve both been scanning the sidewalks for kids on skates of any kind, and we haven’t seen any. We don’t know if he wants rollerskates, rollerblades, or something else entirely. Of those, we have no idea what’s cool and what’s not. All we know about him is that he’s 12 years old and from somewhere in DC. There’s no mechanism in the program to ask for clarification from him.
If your readers have any insight, we’d love to hear it. We want to help grant a holiday wish, not come close only to really disappoint him.”
Anyone have kids, cousins, friends around this age? What type of skates do they say are popular.

When Ping Pong Dim Sum opened back in Dec. ’09 in Chinatown I promised myself I would no longer jump to conclusions about the name of a restaurant. Of course, Ping Pong Dim Sum does not actually offer ping pong though they do offer some mean dim sum.
But I am happy to say that the International House of Pong coming to 1010 Wisconsin Ave, NW will offer table tennis. It’s liquor application permit says:
“New American cuisine restaurant, with areas for table tennis. Number of Seats 150, and total occupancy load is 300″
However, it does raise the question – what exactly is “New American cuisine”?
I couldn’t find the exact storefront at 1010 Wisconsin Ave, NW where the restaurant will be located but I’ll be sure to update when they open.
In the meantime we discussed lots of places to play ping pong around DC, here.

“Dear PoP,
Anybody know what’s up?
When I asked at the raven they told me they were being” bedazzeled”.
Back in July ’09 there were some upgrades on the inside. I also noticed some work going on outside. I just assumed that it was getting a little spit and polish. But it does look like the wood border might indicate something more intricate. Anyone know the scoop? I’ll be sure to update with new photos when the fascade renovation is completed.

Back in July the owner of Haydee’s had the tree cut down after an apparent miscommunication of whether or not it was actually legal to do so. Thanks to a reader for sending in the shot above of the newly planted tree in front of Haydee’s at 3102 Mount Pleasant Street NW.
