Tynan will be located at 1275 First Street, NE. And they say they’ll be opening in 2-3 weeks. Nice. I of course noticed the big sign announcing a happy hour, proclaiming it the best happy hour in NoMa. Just wait till the Harris Teeter opens…
Just out of curiosity – does the Columbia Heights location also serve beer?

Inter American Defense Board building looking good at 2600 NW 16th St, NW. It is amazing what a paint job can do. And of course the architecture is pretty bad ass in and of itself.
For the curious – from Wikipedia:
“The Inter-American Defense Board is an international committee of nationally appointed defense officials who develop collaborative approaches on common defense and security issues facing countries in North, Central, and South America. The IADB provides technical advice and services to the Organization of American States (OAS).”

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best. I’m aware not everyone loves pets. But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure. It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

I’m loving the location between two parks. Does $1200 sound reasonable for this studio?

“Dear PoP,
I’m heading on a five week long vacation to Asia and trying to deal with a million details that come along with international extended travel. My latest annoyance is trying to find a place for my car during the month.
I currently park on the street and have to move it twice weekly to avoid street cleaning tickets. I’ve done some research and parking at a metro stop with long term parking is not supposed to go past 12 days while Union station is a whopping $19 a day. So short of getting numerous tickets and possibly towed by leaving my car on the street, I haven’t found any affordable options.”
You may be in luck as street sweeping is suspended this Friday. But if that it doesn’t work – what/where do you guys recommend for long term parking options?

You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.
Well, I have to be honest, I was a bit disappointed by the virtual tour. I’m thinking it’s probably way more impressive in person. I know I was digging the outside when I walked past it. What’d you guys think? Does $549,000 ($375 monthly fee) sound reasonable for this 2 bed/2 bath?

I thought it was pretty cool when MPD issued a press release announcing that:
On June 24, 2010, a large number (more than five hundred) of baseball cards was found in a grassy area in East Potomac Park near the Tennis Center. The person who found the cards recognized their potential value and notified the police who recovered the items as found property. Thus far, the Police Department has been unsuccessful in locating the collection’s owner.
But I find it a little disconcerting that they still include this info on their email reports (most recently, last Friday Oct. 22nd). I actually love baseball cards. Or used to anyway. But you’ve made your announcement. Noted. It was a nice gesture. But it’s time to move on.
Now if it was baseball autographs…

From DPW:
Weekly (signed), residential mechanical street cleaning will end for the season on Friday, October 29, 2010. “No parking/street cleaning” restrictions will be lifted and motorists may park along posted, alternate-side, daytime street sweeping routes without being required to move their cars on street-cleaning days.
Residential street sweeping is suspended for public safety concerns during the winter. Trucks used to clean the streets are designed to release a fine spray of water to control the dust as they sweep. When the temperature drops to freezing or below, sweeping is discontinued to prevent freezing and accidents to vehicles and pedestrians.
Overnight sweeping scheduled for the District’s major roadways, which include Pennsylvania, Georgia, Constitution, and Independence avenues, will take place as usual all winter, as the weather permits. Motorists are urged not to park in these areas during the posted overnight sweeping hours. Residents and business owners will be notified when street sweeping resumes again in the spring of 2011.
By suspending the street sweeping program, DPW personnel can focus on leaf collection, which will begin November 8, as well as the upcoming snow removal season. The 2010-2011 leaf season will run November 8, 2010, through January 15, 2011. During this time, leaves will be vacuumed from each street at least twice.
New brochures announcing the fall/winter leaf collection season will be mailed to residents beginning this weekend.”
I’ll update the leaf collection schedule when it is released.

“Dear PoP,
Friday night around 2 am there was a woman walking home alone and intoxicated who was assaulted by 2 dudes in the alley off 18th street in Mt Pleasant. She luckily was only scuffed up and fortunately she’ll physically recover, but the incident rattled the woman and the neighbors. I think there are a couple important learning points we need to take away from what happened Friday night (and what happens too often in our city). Obviously, we’re not going to stop crime but there are important measures one can take to reduce the odds of becoming a victim. If you’re going to get lit (and I enjoying having drinks as much as anyone) then be smart about how you get home. For the past four years I’ve worked in one of the busiest ER’s in town and have been keeping a mental tally of the demographics behind assault victims that I treat. Where were they? Who were they with? Intoxicated? All too often, these people have been walking home alone, deep into the night, and are intoxicated. It’s not rocket science. Don’t make yourself an easy target. Take a cab, get a ride from a friend, or walk home with a friend (I rarely see an assault when people are walking in groups), especially if you’ve been drinking.”
I know I’ve certainly made the mistake of walking home when I should’ve taken a cab. As the original poster says this is not a case of blaming the victim but sadly, walking home alone after a night drinking can be like a form of Russian roulette. This is probably the best advice that was ever given to me years ago. When in doubt, don’t hesitate, and always take a cab home late at night especially if you have been drinking. The advice can be easy to shrug off but it’ll be the smartest money you ever spent if you consistently heed the advice. And remember this advice applies to all DC neighborhoods!

We learned back in late Sept. that Dr. K’s Vintage Clothing would be opening up at 1534 U St, NW and I’m happy to say they are now open for business. I spoke briefly with owner, Som Kiat, who takes his collecting very seriously. You’ll see denim from the 1870s and some very very cool stuff. At the moment the credit card machine is not hooked up so only cash and check is accepted for another week or so. To buy or to browse it’s def. worth checking out. And most def. a great addition to U St, NW.

Photo by MJ, first ever Red Derby Roof Deck opening 10/22/10
We’ve known for a couple of years that Red Derby (located at 14th and Quincy St, NW) was looking to get a roof deck but excitement began to build in earnest when permits were filed this past June. As some know, I was sick as a dog last week but I started receiving emails Friday night about the Derby’s deck opening and at that moment I fully recovered. Special thanks to MJ for sending some photos and sending the very early word. Also thanks to all the other readers who sent in word about the opening.
As some will note, it is a bit unfortunate that the deck opens just as cold weather is coming however, this weekend was beautiful and when I checked it out on Sat. I also spotted some heaters. So unless we get a crazy winter like last year, I’d say it’ll be open for a while. And of course next Spring is absolutely going to kick ass.

One of the best bars (if not the best bar) in DC just got way better. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
