It’s yours for $1,795,000.

And I thought it’d be fun to compare the Cleveland Park house with a Capitol Hill house going for nearly the same price. 18 5th St, NE is going for $1,800,000 and you can see photos here. If you had $1.8 million to drop – which would you pick?

Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user caroline.angelo (recipe here)

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have.

Most people start traveling this afternoon so posts will be very light until Monday.

I’ll start with a rave – that photo looks so good – I can’t wait for some pumpkin pie!!!

Dear PoP – Where to Get Christmas Trees?

I just noticed that a lot went up across from the Convention Center on the 9th Street, NW side just south of Mass. Ave. That lot opens Nov. 27 and what was particularly cool was that they said they delivered. Previously we’ve had some recommendations here, here (for reasonable priced trees), here and here.

One reader was particularly interested in finding a small tree for an apartment. Anyone know a good place to get one of those?

Dear PoP – Lane Closure on 9th and Mass?

“Dear PoP,

I was just wondering if you know how long the two southbound lanes (far right) around 9th and Mass (NW) will be closed for construction of the new Convention Center hotel. I don’t think I am the only one that likes to take the 79 bus from CH to downtown that is frustrated with how long it is taking to go those three blocks every morning with those lanes closed. Do you have any information?”

Hmm, that’s a good question. I’m going to guess many many months. Does anyone know how long the lanes will be closed? The project is scheduled to continue through 2012 but it is not clear if the lane will be closed the whole time. For those who drive or take the bus through this area – has this created a major slowdown/traffic jam?

American Ice Company’s BBQ Smoker

A quick follow up to yesterday’s post and photos of the bar and bbq joint, American Ice Company, coming to 917 V St, NW. A reader inquired whether the bbq would be from a smoker or wood fire grill. Well it’s a proper smoker – see photo above. Additionally, keep your eyes peeled for some sweet chalk art

Special Wed. Before Thanksgiving Question of the Day – What are you Thankful For?

Photo by PoPville flickr user JRoseC

Last year a reader suggested a what are we thankful for post and I liked the idea. I’m thankful for a wonderful family, friends and our online community that has become PoPville. You can drive me nuts from time to time but I genuinely like, respect and appreciate (most of) you more than ever.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the Police Departments, Fire Department, other emergency responders and all those who are working over this Thanksgiving holiday.

To MPD in particular, I often post horrific crimes (and banal ones too) but rarely post about your accomplishments. Just this evening I read a report of a robbery that was thwarted as a result of MPD officers and 2 handguns were recovered in the first police district (700 block of 11th Street SE). Your successes are not unnoticed and I want to thank you for your service. While I and others don’t often say it, I appreciate your efforts in making our neighborhoods a safer place to live.

For those traveling – wishing you and yours a safe and speedy journey.

If anyone cooks a particularly good looking Turkey or has a good thanksgiving scene be sure to upload to the PoPville flickr pool or send in an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com.

So, what are you thankful for this year?

I Think We All Need to See This Exhibit

Right?

From Wikipedia:

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (also spelled Arcimboldi) (1527 – July 11, 1593) was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of such objects as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books — that is, he painted representations of these objects on the canvas arranged in such a way that the whole collection of objects formed a recognizable likeness of the portrait subject.

House of the Day

This is a pretty unique one I found in Brookland (near the Edgewood border). The rest of the homes on the block were all brick row houses like the one in the photo to the left.

The 5pm Post – “Dear PoP: national arboretum to destroy mature azaleas exhibit because it draws too many people”

Photo of Azaleas by PoPville flickr user J Y W Obviously not from the arboretum but a good example of azaleas.

I’ve been getting a lot of emails about this.

“Dear PoP,

I find this outrageous. Read it and weep. I think I love the azaleas at the arboretum more than the cherry blossoms on the Mall. It always seemed like a secret treasure known only to locals. Judging from the arboretum’s proposed actions, apparently not.”

The Washington Gardener has the full story:

“On November 8, 2010, Aaron Cook, the President of the Azalea Society of America, learned that the U.S. National Arboretum in NE Washington, DC, plans to remove the mature azalea display on Mount Hamilton. The Garden Unit Leader at the National Arboretum, Mr. Scott Aker, announced that the azaleas will be cut down in the summer of 2011 and their stumps painted with herbicide. Many of us are upset by this decision.”

Looks Like Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine Has Opened Up at 3118 Georgia Ave, NW

Back in early Oct. we learned that the space formerly home to Hadiyah Cafe would become Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine. When I walked by last weekend it was closed but a menu was in the window so I’m guessing it’s probably open now. Anyone check them out. From peeking in the window – the space looks good.

They even have a happy hour.

Shot of the menu after the jump. (more…)

Judging Buildings/What the Helen of Troy is This?

I was admiring this building from the Old Soldiers Home (by Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW) when I couldn’t figure out what was up with the watch tower up top. So first – is that a watch tower up top or some sort of gigantic chimney? Does it look like it was added at a later time to the structure? Any speculation on why something like that was added?

I still think it’s a pretty sweet building.

Couple more shots including a closeup after the jump. (more…)

Your Afternoon Animal Fix

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.  I’m aware not everyone loves pets.  But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure.  It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

Tues. Afternoon Rental Option – U St, NW

This rental is located at T Street NW at Vermont Avenue NW:

The Craigslist ad says:

“This recently renovated and newly updated row house has it all. The house features a well-furnished roof top terrace complete with a private sun room, a SkyDeck, and plenty of outdoor deck space for entertaining guests. The ground level has an extensive backyard reminiscent of Thailand or Brazil with dark hardwood decking, a hot tub, and tropical plantings.

This 2 Bedroom / 2 Bath features hardwood floors throughout, 2 wood burning fireplaces, kitchen with stainless appliances and an almost endless list of high end finishes and custom touches. Stealth Acoustics invisible audio system throughout the house accompanies the massive walk-in closet, double shower head master bath and other enviable amenities.

$2,900/month with partially furnished option. Short-term leases and pets welcome. Off-street residential parking available.”

I’m curious what you think about the price for this 2 bedroom in light of yesterday’s 2 bedroom rental discussion in Bloomingdale.

Does $2,900 sound right for this one?
