Sweet Rock Creek Church Cemetery Sculptures

We’ve spoken about Rock Creek Church cemetery (by Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW and near the Old Soldiers Home grounds) in the past. But every time I don’t go for a few months I’m always amazed by its beauty. Particularly many of the sculptures found throughout the grounds. I’m gonna highlight a few that struck me as particularly cool on a recent trip. And if you haven’t been in person, it’s worth the trip.

9th St, NW News – Lounge Closes and Art Gallery Opens

I’m embarrassed to say I forget the name of the lounge (it used to be called Nafka Restaurant ) located at 2010 9th St, NW near the 9:30 club but it has closed.

Further south on 9th St, it looks like a new gallery has opened up. Perhaps it’s just new to me but I never noticed it before the banner pictured below went up at 1306 9th St. NW. According their Web site, Zeki Gallery and Studio is run by:

“Zeki Findikoglu was born in 1946 in Iznik, Turkey. He lived in virtually every region of the Anatolian Peninsula. The rich variety of cultural and artistic traditions in Turkey developed into a lifelong interest. Zeki moved to the United States in 1973.

A professional artist since 1970 and an art professor since 1977, Zeki has gained international acclaim. His highly stylized paintings and prints incorporate Turkish culture and artistic contentions, extending them with a modern artistic vocabulary to provide a bridge between ancient and contemporary art. Zeki’s works have been exhibited in the US and Turkey, as well as Europe and Asia.”

Anyone ever check out the studio?

Old Hall Bros. Funeral Home Getting Renovated in Shaw/Ledroit Park

I’ve been keeping my eye on these properties located at 621/623 Florida Ave, NW (near the Howard theater also getting renovated) for quite a while since they are such beautiful buildings. I was happy to see serious renovations have started to take place. Anyone know what the plans are?

Your Afternoon Animal Fix

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.  I’m aware not everyone loves pets.  But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure.  It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

This rental is located at 121 12th St. SE:

The Craigslist ad says:

“Mid-Sized studio in classic Victorian Era apartment building near Lincoln Park and Eastern Market.

Wood floors, high ceilings, large windows. Historic building with lots of modern amenities: new kitchen and new central a/c and heat, cable and wi-fi options, onsite laundry room, resident manager. The building also has a roof deck with one of the best views on Capitol Hill.

Great location: 1/2 block south of Lincoln Park, 10 minute walk to Eastern Market.

Sorry, no short term rentals, no furnished apartments, no pets (cats ok).”

Does $1195 sound reasonable for a studio here?

Dear PoP – Sinkholes!

“Dear PoP,

So, I have a little dispute with our landscape/hardscape contractor about a two sinkholes in our Columbia Heights backyard. I believe the sinkholes have occurred due to a lack of soil compaction but they think its plumbing related. I’m wondering if there are any soils engineers or geotech experts in the POP viewing area that would be willing to take a look and provide some opinion. This has been a multi-year saga with one trip already to the DC Courts Dispute Resolution Center. I’d jump at the chance for and expert opinion to put this issue to rest. Any help would be appreciated!”

If we have soils engineers or geotech experts I’ll be seriously impressed. If not, perhaps others have dealt with a similar situation? If so, how was responsible and how was the issue resolved?

Dear PoP – Temporary Street Parking on a No Parking Side of the Street Question

Photo by PoPville flickr user Wayan Vota

“Dear PoP,

I am preparing to have blown in insulation installed. The company informed me that they need to park either directly in front of the house or directly behind it. My house is on a two way street (P St) that only allows parking on the opposite side. As the street is very busy with buses (G2) and decent flow of cars, I called my police district office to see if I could get a temporary permit for the truck. MPD referred me to dc.gov and after speaking with someone in the permit office I was informed that they don’t override street signs. A manager is supposed to be calling me back to discuss options. I do not have alley access and am at a loss about what to do. Has anyone had to deal with a similar issue or have suggestions?”

Isn’t it possible to park in the alley behind the house, or that’s too far away from the actual house? Has anyone dealt with a situation like this before?
