On Sunday afternoon @dcfireems sent the word on twitter:
“@dcfireems: 3318 Warder St NW – CO leak – malf furnace – 1 adult male DOA, 2 adult females evaluated by EMS w CO poisionig”
WUSA 9 writes:
When emergency workers arrived the woman was disoriented and they detected high levels of carbon monoxide inside the home. Piringer says a woman found upstairs was unconscious and a man found in the basement was unconscious and not breathing. He says the man was pronounced dead at the home.
Piringer says the likely cause of the high carbon monoxide levels is a malfunctioning furnace in the basement.
A reader who sends in the article implores people to please have their furnaces checked regularly and carbon monoxide detectors installed in your homes.

“Dear PoP,
You should really check out this new place fast gourmet. I think they’ve been open about a month now. I walked by the gas station pretty much everyday without knowing there’s actually good food inside. I checked it out after reading about it online, and its really delicious, one of the best cuban sandwiches i’ve ever had. They also have rotisseree chicken, salads, and a pretty big menu for being in such an odd location. The owners are from south america and its clear they really care about the quality of the food they’re serving. They couldn’t be nicer, and I’m worried that business is really slow because of the odd location. I probably walked by it dozens of times without knowing what’s in there. Its also open 24 hours on friday and saturday. I’m not connected with them in any way, I just think its a shame that they don’t have much business since they’re such nice guys who do good work.”
We noted their opening back in August and I’ve been hearing great things about their food ever since. A friend of mine has been preaching their awesomeness for weeks to me. I stopped in on Sat. to snap some photos and indeed the folks were super nice. Also every patron had a gigantic smile on their face. I’ll be honest, I never would’ve guessed this would happen in a commercial space of a gas station. But mad props to them for pulling this off.

Their Web site says:
“You’ll find that not only do we serve high quality food but we’re an eco friendly business as well with our sustainable natural free trade coffee from around the world, natural fruit juices, organic bread and our environmentally friendly to-go containers. You’ll be glad to know that we don’t serve processed food.
Everything is prepared fresh daily at your request by our chef. Free WIFI, hip ambiance and sharp service. We also deliver!”

You can see their full menu here. They are located at the corner of 14th st and W St. NW. Anyone else check them out yet?

Awesome. I dare say this is even cooler than the Festivus kiosk in Adams Morgan.
This is in front of someone’s home. This is also the home of one of the most terrifying home decorations I’ve ever seen.

Since we’ve been on a bit of Scandinavian kick here, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share this gift from Norway at Union Station.

And don’t forget to check out the “Norweigan Holiday” train set nearby:

“Dear PoP,
There have been some spectacular sunrises of late (this one was on the 16th) – compensation for getting up in the dark, I suppose. I like that you can see the steam from the smokestack by the Lamont Street Lofts in the distance of this shot.”
Welcome to the Beautiful Life.

I think I have a new contender for brightest painted brick row house (in Shaw). But I think it fits in nicely on the block because a lot of them are painted in bright colors.

The following is in response to a post last week titled, Provocative Protest Signs Plastered Up and Down Georgia Avenue. I also noted [on Sat. afternoon] that most of the signs have been torn up. I’m not sure why Everlasting Life was listed on the poster in the first place but please take a few seconds to read the following:
I am writing as a representative of Everlasting Life Cafe concerning our restaurant hosting a meeting for an extremist group.
Please be advised that this meeting has been moved.
The messages and opinions expressed by this group are in no way, shape or form, associated with the views of Everlasting Life Cafe.
Rather, we would like for the service that we provide remain a reflection of our appreciation for every single customer that walks through our doors and in no instance would we allow anything within our control to offend anyone who contributes to our business, in turn, providing a source of enrichment for the community in which we currently reside.
We do not support any extremist groups and that the messages and opinions expressed by this group are in no way, shape or form, associated with the views of Everlasting Life Café. We are in business to provide healthy alternative food to everyone, that’s all. Because of this post we’ve lost countless customers over a misunderstanding.
We appreciate your patronage and hope to receive the continued support from you and all of your friends and family.

“Dear PoP,
A few months ago, local artist Flo Anito shot her first music video at
Capital City Diner, and the video’s now up on Youtube. We’re really proud
to help support local music, and the video turned out great!”

2230 O Street, NW Abandoned Apartment Bldg
“Dear PoP,
I was wondering if you or any of your readers could give me any information about this abandoned building on the corners of 22nd and O Streets, NW. It has looked this for about a year. One year ago a Public Notice sign went up, but other than replacing the bricks on the outside of the building about 10 months ago, nothing has changed. In fact, the front has recently been painted white. Have you any information about this eyesore?”
Any rumors or scuttlebutt of what’s going on here?

“Dear PoP,
I’ve been getting a slew of ‘Alert DC’ notifications about water main breaks the past few weeks. While the weather has been getting cold, even dropping below freezing now, surely it’s not cold enough for these breaks to be caused by freezing water bursting the pipes. I’d be curious if any PoP readers know why we’re seeing all of these water main breaks.”
When I posted about a recent one in Mt. Pleasant a representative of DC Water gave an explanation:
“PoP Readers,
Across the country, a water main breaks every two minutes on average. Here in the District of Columbia, we average slightly more than one a day, but far more in the early winter months. The median age of a water main in the District is 75 years, with a good number installed during the Civil War era. As you probably know from the extensive media coverage this week, the combination of old pipes and quickly changing air temperature makes water main breaks more likely.
In the budget and rate structure approved by our Board to begin this past October, DC Water is set to replace 1 percent – or approximately 11 miles – of the District’s cast-iron water mains each year. This is not as fast as we would like, but it is triple the previous replacement rate and twice the national average. It will also mean many, many more torn-up streets than before.
Continues after the jump. (more…)
