Photo by PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

From DPW:

“The Department of Public Works reminds residents:

1. We will follow the normal trash/recycling collections schedule on Friday, December 31. If Friday is your collection day, please have your materials out by 6 am Friday and return your containers to your property by 8 pm Friday.

2. DPW will collect holiday trees (please remove ornaments, lights, tinsel, etc.) between Monday, January 3, and Saturday, January 15. Place your trees in the treebox space in front of your home, or adjacent to the curb (but not in the street). Please put your tree out for collection between Sunday, January 2, and Sunday, January 9. After January 15, you may put your tree where you put your trash and recycling and we will collect it from there, depending on the truck’s capacity.

3. DPW will suspend enforcement of parking meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions on Friday and Saturday, December 31 and January 1. Also, DPW will not tow abandoned vehicles.

4. Saturday, January 8, is the next Household Hazardous Waste/E-cycling/Document Shredding day. Please bring these materials to the Ft. Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Road, NE, between 8 am and 3 pm. The February drop-off day is February 5.”

Tonic Continues to Expand in Mt. Pleasant

I noticed some permits on the basement space below Radius next Tonic at 3155 Mt. Pleasant St, NW. It turns out Tonic is taking over that space and is creating another bar area.

You may recall that back in Oct. that Tonic had remade its upstairs space into a sportsbar. I’ll be sure to update as contstruction progresses and opening dates are announced.

Bar Pilar Hopes to Expand Into 2nd Floor at 1833 14th St, NW

Bar Pilar is located at 1833 14th St, NW (south of T street). Anyone who has spent time at Bar Pilar on a Friday or Saturday night will recognize that an expansion would provide some needed breathing room. Personally I think it would be great.

According to a liquor license amendment recently posted out front, the:

“LICENSEE REQUESTS EXPANSION OF PREMISE TO INCLUDE 2ND FLOOR FOR 46 ADDITIONAL SEATS”

Their Web site reminds me:

“Every Tuesday night from 5pm – 11pm our chefs prepare a home style meal inspired by different cultures. From rustic French to American picnic food, come discover our home cooking with your friends and you’ll be sure to leave happy. Each week he creates a menu based on the freshest produces available to him that week. No future menus have yet been established. The theme is usually announced each week a couple days in advance of the event.”

You can see their regular menu here.

And on a side note while looking upstairs I was reminded of their awesome art deco numbers:

As well as some awesome sculptures:

2 More Weeks Until V Street Cafe Opens Up

Back in Nov. we learned that Gori Cafe was becoming V Street Cafe at 1113 V Street, NW. I finally got a chance to peek inside and talk with the owners. In addition to opening up in around 2 weeks, the owners also mentioned that there would be free wifi, coffee and sandwiches at first with the possibility of beer and wine later on. It’s a small space but they will open up a back garden section when the weather warms up. In the meantime this looks like it’ll be a nice place to study, read and/or catch a cup of coffee.

Your Afternoon Animal Fix

Photo by PoPville flickr user nairdaecartal

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.  I’m aware not everyone loves pets.  But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure.  It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

Reader Alert: More Car Break-Ins

“Dear PoP,

Just want to let you know that my friends’ car was broken into on Christmas Eve around 9:30pm at Randolph St and 8th St. NW. As soon as it happened, they heard the alarm and ran outside but whoever did it had already left. My neighbor was outside and I had told him what happened and he proceeded to admonish me for telling them to park on
Randolph. He said that he had recently had his car broken into as well on the same corner. Apparently it’s a happenin’ spot for dudes looking for an easy break-in-and-out. Thanks!”

Winter sun images and poem by Roshani Kothari

Photos and words by PoPville flickr user Roshani Kothari

Winter Sun
Luring me with your golden smile
Everything glowing
Bathed in your golden light
But where is your summer warmth?
…Feeling you fast fading
Numbing my fingers
Enticing me with your golden smile
Pleasing to my eyes
But freezing me inside out
Longing for your summer warmth…

Dear PoP: “random act of kindness – please help me find the person who helped me!”

Photo by PoPville flickr user mosley.brian

“Dear PoP,

This morning I was on the G8 bus on Rhode Island Avenue and got off at Florida and Rhode Island. I then proceeded to transfer to the 92 along Florida Avenue and almost had a heart attack when I realized I could not find my wallet!!!. I got off the bus two blocks into my trip and retraced my route back to RI and FL but could not find my wallet. I saw this guy walking along RI, stopped him and asked him if he had seen an orange wallet on the sidewalk. He said no and then I briefly explained what had happened. At this point I briefly saw the G8 going on 9th Street and wondered if I would be able to recover my wallet. The guy in front of me dug into his pockets and gave me the $6 he had on him and wished me good luck trying to hail a cab and getting my wallet. There was hardly any traffic and the only cab that went by did not want to pick me up but I was able to convince him when I mentioned my lost wallet. The race was on!. The cabbie went down 9th and no sign of the bus, we then hit H Street and we saw the bus on 12th St, the cabbie hit the gas and we were able to cut off the bus at 13th and H. I got off the cab (the bus driver thought we were nuts) and asked if anyone had seen my wallet, I went to the seat where I had been sitting and that was now occupied by someone else, the guy got up and there it was!!!! My wallet!

I would love to find the guy who lent me the $6 to thank him immensely for the huge favor and for his kindness, I could have been a delusional woman asking for money and he had pity on me.

You have my email and if he reads this I just want to say : THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!”

So awesome!
