Urban Investment Partners (UIP) Buys 1349 Kenyon St, NW in Columbia Heights

Wow UIP is on a roll. Right before the new year they announced that the apartments at 811 Quincy St, NW were purchased for $8.2 Million with a $4 million renovation set to begin. On Wed. afternoon I received the following press release about 1349 Kenyon St, NW:

Urban Investment Partners (UIP) of Washington, D.C., in partnership with Infinity Real Estate (IRE) of New York, NY has acquired the a 40-unit apartment building at 1349 Kenyon Street, N.W. in Washington, a half block from the Columbia Heights Metro station, for $4.5 million.

Under the District’s Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), the 1349 Kenyon Tenants’ Association and UIP reached an agreement that will preserve, improve, and protect the property as part of the District’s dwindling rental housing stock.

UIP will begin a $2 million renovation that will add five to seven apartments to the building’s terrace level. UIP will preserve the building’s 1925 facade while renovating, upgrading, repairing and restoring the building’s common areas, building systems, and individual apartments. UIP General Contracting, Inc., a subsidiary of UIP, will begin the work in the first quarter of 2011 and complete it by the end of the third quarter of the year.

Photo by PoPville flickr user pablo.raw

If we do get a good snow and a day off tomorrow – be sure to send me (princeofpetworth (at) gmail) or upload some good snow photos to the pool.

Submit your photos to the PoPville flickr pool here. Follow PoPville on twitter here.

I’ll be sure to post/tweet if a snow emergency goes into effect (you’ll have to make sure you’re not parked on a snow emergency route!). You can find a map of snow emergency routes here.

A few recent snow related tweets:

If Fed Gov. Closed tomorrow – Meridian Pint will open at 10am!

From Taylor Gourmet Deli: “Snowmergncy Survival Kit” from Taylor Gourmet NOW! 2 hoagies, 2 chips, 2 drinks,1 fritto – for $20.11″

From Blue Banana on Georgia Ave: “Happy Hour is from 6pm – 8pm with $3 Rails and $5 Beers. Post HH will have Snow Day Shot Specials!”

And of course a snowball fight has already been scheduled for Dupont Circle tonight, Wednesday, January 26 · 8:00pm – 11:00pm. Let me know if you hear of any others tomorrow!

Unfortunately at my house it’s still raining…

Dear PoP – good meeting spaces?

Photo by PoPville flickr user lmno.p

“Dear PoP,

My volunteer group has been struggling to find a good meeting space for our monthly meetings. Our group promotes volunteering by creating a fun and social atmosphere, but our meetings may have to move to a library in order to accommodate the group…ugh! We’re trying to find a place that’s quiet enough that we can hold a meeting, with food (and preferably beverages!) either available to order, or somewhere that allows us to bring food into, that can accommodate 15 or so people, that is metro accessible and somewhat centrally located between DC/VA/MD (we’ve been trying to stick to gallery place/metro center/penn quarter area). And again, we’re a non-profit volunteer group with limited funds so we try to keep it fairly cheap. Anyone have any suggestions? We’ve tried places like Teaism (surprisingly loud on a week night), Cosi (crappy food/service), Laughing Man Tavern (unsurprisingly loud).”

Hmm, I was gonna recommend one of the new libraries! But obviously no food or drink could be a downer.

How about Union Station? Or the pavilion at the National Portrait Gallery? Where would you guys suggest?

Hate Crime/Graffiti in Trinidad

Sorry to hear about this disturbing news. From the MPD listserv:

A resident wrote, “I didn’t see a mention of my vandalized car and that it was a targeted hate crime. I think our community should know about this and be vigilant, especially in the area of the intersection of Trinidad Ave. and Morse St. NE. Thanks to the officers who responded so promptly to my call last Friday morning.”

MPD Chief Groomes responded:

“thank you for asking about your crime… for on January 21st , the 5th District and GLU unit came out to your block and did take a destruction of property report for the damage to your car and also classified it as a Bias motivated destruction of property due to the words spray painted on your car…… the GLU unit will be conducting the follow up along with the 5d detectives office. We ask that if anyone has information on this crime to contact us 1888 919-CRIME or at GLUU”

and

“regarding this offense our victim who recently moved to the Trinidad area came outside to find his car spraypainted with the word, “fag” … thus he contacted us to report such ..however we have done a door to door canvass and it has not lead to any leads/tips to this act… there has been no other acts of this nature in this area.”

Sticky Fingers to Appear on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars

Sticky Fingers is located at 1370 Park Rd NW in Columbia Heights. Whenever I post about them it always evokes heated comments. I know people have burned out a bit on cupcake news but I think this is pretty cool. From Veg News Daily:

After Chloe Coscarelli won season one of Cupcake Wars, vegan bakers are back on season two, represented by Washington, DC-based shop Sticky Fingers Bakery. Sticky Fingers co-founder Doron Petersan says the show’s producers had the well-established bakery on their radar, and invited them to apply to be on the show.

Cupcake Wars airs on March 8 and will be a competition-filled hour.

Judging Restaurants – The Source

The Source is located in the Newseum building at 575 Pennsylvania Ave, NW. I figured since it’s Wed. house porn, I throw some restaurant porn up as well. Is this restaurant porn? I just assume so because the First Lady and President recently ate there. Their Web site says:

The Source is the first fine dining restaurant in the nation’s capital headlined by Chef Wolfgang Puck. Designed by EDG, the three-level restaurant is the signature dining experience at the Newseum, an interactive museum dedicated to the news. The Source offers two distinct dining experiences as well as a private room located on the lower level that seats up to 40 guests.

The ground floor bar and lounge where guests enter offers approachable dining in a casual setting with a traditional Japanese Izakaya menu featuring Asian-inspired delights. Upstairs, guests can enjoy a menu that features modern interpretations of Asian dishes. The modern aesthetic design boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that line the restaurant and a two-story, temperature-controlled glass wine wall linking the main floor with the upstairs that holds more than 2,000 bottles of the restaurant’s impressive collection.

You can see their menus here.

“Underground” Farmers Market, Grey DC, Opens at Kushi on Sunday

Back in mid-Dec. we learned of the launch of this new “underground market”. At the time it was going to take place in Petworth. However the organizer, Maya, has told me that Kushi located at 465 K St NW in Mt. Vernon Square was able to offer up space that would work very well. She says the event at Kushi will be:

“Featuring the band Frau Eva

Vendors to include: The Seasonal Pantry, Dre’s, The Gourmet Cherry, Gavin and Friends, Cunningham Farms, Guerilla Yoga DC, Zachari’s, Smokin’ Somethin’ BBQ, Kushi’s, and more!”

I’m still intrigued by the market. You can sign up for it here.

From Grey DC’s Web site:

“Come down to Kushi Izakaya & Sushi on Sunday January 30th from 12 to 5pm.
465 K St NW, Washington, District of Columbia 20001 Sign up to avoid a long line at the door! $2 entrance fee.”

MPD Arrests Armed Robbery Suspect in Shaw

I’ve said it before and I know I always post about negative crime news but it should be noted (from time to time) that good work is also being done by MPD. I’m not saying we shouldn’t still be frustrated by the recent crime stories but there are a lot of good MPD officers out there and they deserve some props in cases like this:

This morning [Tues.] at approximately 8:00 am officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 600 block of Q St, NW. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect and were able to locate the suspect and place him under arrest.

If anyone has any additional information about this robbery please contact Detective Jeffrey Bruce of the Third District Detective’s Office at 202 673-6918.
