“Dear PoP,
I am a Montreal Canadiennes fan looking to gather a few of my fellow friends from the North together to watch the Habs-Caps game on Feb 1st (a Tuesday). We prefer the Capitol Hill/ H Street or even Chinatown neighbourhoods. Do you have any suggestions or knowledge of DC bars which carry Canadian (or better, Quebecois) beer?”
Hmm, as usual I’m going to defer to the hockey fans and Canadian beer fans in PoPville. I would guess that some options could be Argonaut, Pug (though they most def. support the Caps), Star & Shamrock for H St, NE and the new Redline for Chinatown or the Ugly Mug on Barracks Row. But like I said – I’m gonna defer to the Canadians and hockey fans – where’s the best place to watch hockey (and possibly get some Canadian brews)?

Back in Oct. ’10 we learned that the Brass Knob Warehouse would be closing their doors in Truxton Circle (57 N St, NW). Sadly, a final date has been announced.
Though some hope remains, owner Andrew Gordon tells me,
“The radiator business will continue via a new location (likely in Mt. Rainier, MD) along with select specialty items (minimal clawfoot tubs, sinks, mantles, etc)…but the BK Warehouse is shutting down its name.”
Stay tuned for an update when the Mt. Rainier location is set up. And of course when a new tenant is found for 57 N St, NW.

This home is located at 1834 Park Rd, NW:
The flier says:
“* * * THIS IS IT! * * * SIGNATURE, SENSATIONAL RENOVATION OF GRANDE DAME IN MOUNT PLEASANT! REMARKABLE ARTS AND CRAFTS INSPIRED TOTAL TRANSFORMATION INC ALL SYSTEMS OVER 4 LEVELS! STATE-OF-THE-ART KITCHEN W/ GRANTITE, DUAL SINKS, STAINLESS BUILT IN APPLIANCES, SOLID WOOD CABS. MASTER SUITE W SPA BATH W HEATED FLOOR AND STEAM SHWR! 2 CAR PKG! EASY INLAW!”
You can find more info here and photos here.
Despite the annoying all caps, this is a pretty sweet house. I love this whole row on Park Rd, always fun to be able to take a peek inside. What do you think of the reno? Think this 5 bed/3.5 bath will go for $995,000?

Thanks to Rashid for sending the info and photos.

On Friday we talked about Boston’s Upper Crust Pizzeria which will be opening a DC location downtown at 1747 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. At the time a reader asked if Mellow Mushroom Pizza was still coming to Adams Morgan in DC. I hadn’t heard of Mellow Mushroom but their Web site says:
“Mellow Mushroom opened in 1974 when three college students founded a business that reflected their eccentric philosophies. They saw pizza baking as an art form, and wanted to bring joy to others by exercising their art. The first store was created out of an old liquor store on Spring Street near Georgia Tech. To accommodate the long lines and gaining popularity, more Mellow Mushrooms sprung up around Atlanta.”
And indeed when you go to their future franchises page (screen shot above) you see Washington DC (with a photo of 18th St, NW in Adams Morgan) opening in May ’11.
Think they’ll be able to break the jumbo slice monopoly in Adams Morgan?
Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

More info as it becomes available.

I’m happy to report that Bloomingdale/Ledroit Park/Truxton Circle residents will be getting a new coffee house very soon. The Florida Coffee House will be opening (hopefully) next Sat. at 220 Florida Ave, NW:
I ran into one of the owners (who was super nice) and was able to get a sneak peek. It is a very small space that can probably fit about 15. There will be a few outdoor spaces available out back when the weather warms up. In addition to coffee, pastries and some other eats will also be available at the coffee house.
Local residents will recognize that this space is only 1 1/2 blocks away from the very well regarded Big Bear Cafe located at 1st and R St, NW.
The Florida Coffee House looks like it can become a very quaint neighborhood spot. I don’t think people will travel miles to visit, like some do for Big Bear, but I do think this new spot will serve the neighborhood(s) very well. I’m super eager to try out the coffee. And they’ll have free wifi too!
While final touches were ongoing at the time of my visit, you can see a couple of photos of the inside after the jump. (more…)

Terrible news. For all who inquired about traffic issues on New Hampshire last night – from MPD:
Around 7pm, units received a call for a shooting in the 6000 blk of NH Ave NE. Upon arrival, 2 male victims were located inside a vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Both males are deceased. A black Scion was seen fleeing the area towards PG County. This case is being investigated by the Homicide Branch. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-919-CRIM(E).

I had the opportunity to stop by Mandu’s 2nd location in Mt. Vernon Square Sat. afternoon to take a quick peek at the space. It is located at 453 K Street, NW in the City Vista complex next door to Kushi. The space looks great and I’m digging the duck theme. Though the classic bibim bap will still be available, Kitchen Manager, Je Kang told me that the Mt. Vernon square location will also have a few options not available at the 1805 18th St, NW location including a few more vegetarian options. (See mock service menu after the jump.)
We judged Mandu’s 18th St, NW location back in Feb. ’09.
