I’m happy to share the news that a lease has been signed at 3310 14th St, NW in the Samuel Kelsey Apartments (across the street from the Tivoli) next to the Florist space. It has been leased by a DC Teacher and resident who is “putting together Coffy Cafe, a coffee shop and crepery with a Mod 60s/70 theme. It’s about 1500sqft and should hopefully be open by late summer.”
I’ll be updating with more info as we get closer to the opening date.

Thanks to all who emailed that the Nati Hokah/Hookah bar has opened at 2839 Georgia Ave, NW. Anyone happen to check them out? Unfortunately next door at 2851 the Zippin Chicken still hasn’t opened yet. Their Web site says they’ll be opening the second week of April.

I’m not even a particularly big car person but I thought this one was about as good as it gets. Anyone know what year it is?

These are from Mt. Vernon Sq. near the Buddha bar on Mass Ave, NW. I kinda feel like it’s too rigid. Anyone else feel that? Anyone know what they are called? Personally I find them a bit overwhelming. What do you guys think: Thumbs up or down?

From that awesome row in Mt. Pleasant (Irving St, NW). I think this is one of the few with a bay window.

From an email:
“We at Lifting Voices have an enormously exciting project underway, and I’m wondering if I might ask for your help.
We work with under-served kids in DC. As you might expect, folks tend to think of our kids as “those” kids, who live in “those” neighborhoods–basically, folks believe they have nothing in common with kids in high-poverty neighborhoods. But, as you know, our kids are funny and delightful and wonderfully human.
We need a project that will bring communities together. So . . . what brings people together?
We are making a 120-page coffee-table book from our kids’ food memories. We selected just 10 kids out of the 200 we serve and got them to write an essay about a food that’s meaningful to them.
Then we got a kick-ass team of photographers and a high-profile street artist to contribute gorgeous photos and illustrations that bring their words to visual life. THEN we got Jose Andres, Chef Spike from Top Chef, and Robert Egger at DC Central Kitchen to contribute essays. All these folks are putting their hand to the wheel because they believe in this project.
We’re almost to the finish line in seeing this project to fruition. We need $5,000 to publish, and we’ve gotten hooked up with a terrific crowd-funding site called Kickstarter.
On Kickstarter, people can contribute a tiny bit of money and receive rewards from the project. One of our rewards is a PDF chapter from the book, and another is a free burger or slice of pizza at Chef Spike’s restaurants.

Le Grenier is looking to open up at 502 H Street NE next to the florist.
The liquor license application says:
“A restaurant with Modern French Cuisine. Food service for all ages. Taped back ground music. Capacity Load is 60. Sidewalk Café with of seating of 4.”

It’s yours for $18,000 a month… Damn! What do you think, realistically, can go into that space and afford an $18,000 a month lease? Interesting that it already has a liquor license. I’m still thinking legit country bar. But that’s a lot of Budweisers to sell…
Design within Reach closed back in Aug. 10 and was located at 1838 Columbia Road, NW.

“Dear PoP,
As a District resident, can I get wine delivered to my house? Is this legal?”
Yup it’s legal. There are services like First Vine that deliver and Cairo Wine and Liquor also delivers in DC.
Anyone ever have wine delivered to their house before? If so, who’d you use and was there an additional charge? How long did it take?

“Dear PoP,
I walked past the Tivoli last night [14th and Park Rd, NW] and thought the progress on the construction was of note. They have converted two of the old movie poster boxes into windows and the ticket box area is really coming along…”
That’s wild that they converted the poster boxes to windows:

This of course will be the home to a Z Burger (or Zebra Girl as I and others will always call it) and the ticket booth will be selling milkshakes.

I took a peek in the window and there’s still a bit of construction to be completed but very good progress:

“Dear PoP,
I’m just wondering if you know of any Haitian restaurants in DC. I remember reading about something in Hyattsville, but that place has since closed.”
Hmm, I know there are many many Caribbean restaurants but I’m not familiar with Haitian specific ones. Anyone know?
