Dear PoP – What do I Need to Know about Owning a Puppy?

Photo by PoPville flickr user sciascia

“Dear PoP,

I am adopting a puppy soon and was hoping your readers could help me out with recommendations. I am new to having a dog, so I need all the help I can get. I need recommendations for everything – vets, groomers, dog walkers, doggy daycare, kennels/boarding, anything and everything will be helpful to me. I live in Columbia Heights, but I do have a car.

PS. Where does Ernie hangout? I am pretty sure my pup will want to be his bud.”

We talked about some dog trainers here and had lots of vet recommendations here. We talked about where to get your pet microchipped here. Lastly, Eric Nuzum introduced us to Little Rascals Doggie Day Care here.

So for those that have or have had puppies – what do you wish you knew back then?

Ed. Note: I’m happy to say that Mr. Larry’s Pet Supplies has officially opened at 3303 11th St, NW in Columbia Heights:

New Bar and Restaurant Coming to old Social Space in Columbia Heights to be called The Getaway

Back at the end of March we learned a few details about the bar that was coming to fill the old Social space at 14th and Meridian Pl, NW. I’ve got a few more details to share, starting with the name – The Getaway. You’ll may recall the 70s/80s car chase theme. I’m digging the name. You?

I’m also able to share some of the menu options which will include:

Wings, Calamari, Burgers, Crab cakes, Steak sliders, bbq, flatbreads, salads, fish, chicken, pasta/pesto and more.

The Getaway is still aiming to open in early May and I’ll post the menu in full when it is finalized at that time.

PoP Preview: Last Exit – Mt. Pleasant’s New Speakeasy, Soft Opens Thurs. Night

Back in early March we learned that the owners of Tonic would be opening up a new speakeasy called Last Exit in the space next to Tonic and under Radius at 3155 Mt. Pleasant St, NW. I was able to get a sneak preview in anticipation of the soft opening Thurs. night at 7pm (grand opening Apr. 28). You actually enter the space through Tonic:

Their Web site says:

Last Exit is an informal cocktail lounge located in Mount Pleasant DC. We feature unique cocktails, infusions, and specialty beers in a relaxed atmosphere. With its plush couches, chaise lounges, and intimate seating, Last Exit is a unique venue for private events and informal gatherings.

Last Exit is open 7 days a week 7pm to close.

Find the entrance to Last Exit at the bottom of the stairs in Tonic.

You can see their menus here including cocktails, beer (they have bottles and will have 6 taps), wine and small plates. Sound good?

I’m intrigued by the infusions.

Rosemary & Black Peppercorns infused vodka served on the rocks with a splash of tonic & paired w/ a side of Green Grapes

The space itself is pretty chill and has a capacity of around 35:

Mt. Vernon Square Gets a Community Market

Wow, don’t know how I missed this – but the Liberty North Community Market recently launched at the corner of 5th and I St, NW next to Bicycle Space. Unfortunately it was pouring rain when I stopped by on Sat. and that day’s market was canceled. It’s Web site says:

Join our new open-air market in heart of D.C. We are putting together an extensive fine arts and crafts section along with a variety of other vendors one would associate at a great outdoor market.

We want to include all types of art work including:
paintings/prints
sculptures
metals
ceramics
instructional classes/demonstrations
photography
on location portrait/illustrative artists
basically everything in the world of art
fashion
jewelery
food
collectibles
furniture/antiques
bakery
coffee/tea
produce
lighting/home decor
perfumes/cologne
other interesting products/services

Looks like they launched April 2nd. Anyone check them out yet?

Best Neighborhood “Historic District” Plaque?

I’ve seen some Capitol Hill ones but they didn’t have a sculpture on it. I haven’t seen too many of these in Dupont but at least one exists – and it’s pretty sweet.

Judging Buildings – Embassy of Slovenia

Looks like a relatively new building from the 2400 block of California St, NW. What I also liked and actually like even more than the embassy is the building right next door – makes for quite a contrast as well. Feels like a totally different world:

Dear PoP – Shower Renovation

Photo by PoPville flickr user Tyrannous

“Dear PoP,

I bought a condo in Shaw last year. It is a new building, and while I love most things about the place, the developer installed my shower stall incorrectly. The grout is jacked up, and the floor needs to be completely replaced. I only intend to renovate the shower, though – the rest of the bathroom is fine.

I started my research with Washingtonian’s home improvement issue, but most of those firms either don’t work in Shaw or handle much larger, more expensive projects than mine. So, that’s where the commenters come in. Has anyone had a good experience hiring a local contractor to do a small-scale bathroom project? If so, how much did you pay, and how long did it take?”

Anyone have a small scale bathroom renovation done? (If so in addition to the reader’s questions – if you like the reno please send an email of a before and after photo to princeofpetworth(at)gmail.)
